The dystopian 21st century Earth presented in Deep Space Nine's "Past Tense" contains a lot of similarities to our world, albeit with some exaggerations. In this analysis I attempt to link various social trends in real life to the creation of the Sanctuary Districts in the show.
This video was recorded before the murder of George Floyd. However, I think discussing the violence depicted in "Past Tense" is still worthwhile as some parallels exist with current injustices in the United States. I sincerely feel compelled to use this platform to demonstrate one of Star Trek's most timely instances of shedding light on social issues.

What you say about being well-intentioned at first but then going bad with overcrowding and no maintenance reminded me of the various megastructure public housing blocks the UK built in the 60s. At first they were apparently really nice, and very affordable due to the economies of scale, but flaws in their design and no maintenance quickly turned them into terrible places to live. Prior to watching this video, I had assumed it was simply a cynical cost-cutting effort to various IRL homeless shelters, help schemes, cost of criminalisation, and so forth. Just scrap it all and replace it with the cheap and scalable Sanctuary Districts. But there possibly could have been people proposing the cost and scalability as a great way to help people, at least at first.

I didn't consider that blocks of flats were like our version of these districts, they're essentially people storage, built to tolerances that we're fine decades ago but now woefully inadequate. Grenfell for example shows how dangerous they can be and many probably are a few small steps away from having the same thing happen.

Its not as bad in the show but yet if things do get worse this could be similar to our future I think the effects of climate change have to be seriously worse then today which is likely but i wonder how much it will be like the show since technology and maybe social programs like universal income could make things a lot different and likely solve many problems beforehand so this never becomes this much of a reality but my gut tells me the real bel riots could be a lot worse we have looting and a lot more lawless now during covid...but there very little reaction other then to find more law enforcement to fix the problem for now. It seems the reality is a bit more tolerant to riots since businesses are all insured for losses likely and unless it keeps happening nothing really changes. I hate to say this but maybe good comes from social unrest when things are forced to change for the better. I would argue this show wasnt a prediction more of a warning from the obvious mistakes in society that arent addressed leading to that type of unrest.

@@andreasklindt7144 yes, and there was a pandemic in the late 1800s from a coronavirus which became one of the four common cold viruses today. But scientists and public health officials warning that a new pandemic was going to come Soon and to be prepared isn’t the same as being able to predict that covid would’ve happened exactly in December 2019 in Wuhan. Plus they were warning about coronaviruses and flu viruses, not just coronaviruses. It’s true that western governments got complacent after SARS and MERS and swine flu and bird flu, they started saying “oh those burnt themselves out so why bother being worried”, but that still doesn’t mean anybody involved knew exactly when and where covid would happen.

Because that's not the norm of the world at large, and one may argue that it takes a nation to protect the rights of groups like women and lgbtq folks. Even within the protective boundaries people see these things as being under attack, so how would they fare if we merged with the majority 3rd world? Do you believe all those people would just embrace our views of female equality, or our alternative sexual lifestyles? Maybe nations are more important than you think.

@@pro-choicemom Sounds like you've ODed on BS BTW, any place installing deterrents to those who might do harm to their property are hardly doing anything negative - even our food pantry was forced to install a time lock on the donation closet, exterior cameras, and motion sensor lighting to deter vagrants from raiding the closet and sleeping and smoking in it every night If they burned down the building with their drunken smoking, the thousands of people we feed every month would go without

You can still watch star trek tos though enterprise on hi channel on cable i used to get it on bunny ears on the east coast but i guess you need something like cable for other areas... This was on hi not that long ago and i found it funny when st has this in ds9 but voyager has something more based on real life if this episode was redone for today it would have to either be made the prime st timeline or an alternative of some sort.

What do you think happened across the pond to make UK willingly or unwillingly let go of Northen Ireland. Especially considering it is said that the unification was due to terrorism(or freedom fighting i guess, according to the quote).

I'm not entirely sure. It's possible the Good Friday Agreement never occurred or broke down by 2024, possibly impacted by secessionist movements across the UK in the wake of Brexit (we know IRL Scotland for example is not happy with the outcome). I made a video a few years ago touching on this, but I can't remember how much detail I went into: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ecqTfcR_t7PMloU.html

@@OrangeRiver given the people currently clamouring to be given a reunification vote, I could potentially see Westminster declining them their right; again as you say similar to Scotland. The GFA has a provision for how and where to hold a vote, but if it already broke down in some other way, they might use that to justify the declination. (Also let’s be real, this government has already tried to break other international treaties when it suited them.) Perhaps a few isolated groups made political attacks on, say, the NI Assembly, while calling for their right to be heard on the matter. Maybe eventually the Republic or some other body with power over the situation eventually goes “okay, come on, let them have their vote”. (That’s just one way to blend the current-day political demands with what Data said, of course.)

I remember watching this as a youth and one thing I recall about star wars in general is that when they went back into the past, in previous episodes, they never showed the future up until that point. This was aired in the 90's showing life in 2024 so that always stuck with me growing up and then started to gradually see it take shape. It's predictive programming, that's all. In all honesty this is not even the first to predict it. You also have 2 movies in Escape from New York and LA with Kurt Russel as Snake Plisken. Actually I think those two movies might even be more accurate where LA and New York become prison colonies for the most part and people who can't escape will be walled in. Technically Hunger Games is like a copy of the 1975 movie Rollerball with James Caan. That movie has some interesting dystopian concepts about today as well or what would have been 2018. One thing to note of is the "Corporate War" that is briefly mentioned but never explained. I think that would explain a lot of today as well because it feels like even though the corporations are working together against us they are also fight to see who is going to own it all like Demolition Man where only Taco Bell exists in the future because when the movie was made Taco Bell just came out and it was wildly popular and I am also sure they paid for the publicity. If you want to keep asking these questions then the rabbit hole is deep!

the difference is that the homeless today will DEMAND it, then later realize that they are in fact prisoners living in 'tent cities' with all the addicts and crazies. they have been making 'shelters' for homeless in some states where homeless are searched before they enter(so no knives or anything that the districts don't like); unarmed they go into these fenced in 'shelters. they get fed and given 'sheds' to live in, but IMO this is going to lead to something very bad.

If taking Black American population on a whole police brutality is not the gravest issue facing their community. In fact probably not even the top 20. In numbers alone, white Americans and Latin Americans see it on a level that not only dwarfs black Americans but makes that number look close to nothing. The issue of police brutality needs to be solved however acting like and believing that if we could just solve that the black American community would be fine is the injustice and truly why the community suffers so much in the US.
