There’s a lot a fan can object to in “Beyond”, but its’ worst scenes are better than the best scenes of STD and STP. I enjoyed it, in part because I had very low expectations, and enjoyed the ways it felt like legit, (if mainstream),Trek. When you see “Final Frontier” in the theater as a kid, your expectations change a lot.. It’s Shakespeare compared to everything they’ve done since.

I agree. But, to be clear, it's not like I take joy in hating it. I so wish I could love it, and the excellence of The Orville demonstrates how possible it is to still get Star Trek right. It's one thing for it to not be quite "my thing"...the way Voyager isn't. It's that it's hard to watch something like Star Trek: Picard or Star Trek: Discovery without feeling depressed or my blood pressure going up. It's the frustration of feeling like they're not adding to the franchise but instead changing into something it's not.

I couldn't agree more Whiteslann, so well said! DS9 gave the Star Trek universe darkness and grit without taking anything away from the hopefullness and optimism of the future of humankind. The Federation was a wonderful place and I watched DS9 and still had that same sense of escapism. Kurtzman Trek is absolute depressing garbage and it genuinely gives me a headache, it's hard to watch - both in it's bad writing and the horrible cinematography. I used to leave Star Trek feeling uplifted, Discovery and Picard (and that stupid cartoon) give me actual genuine migraines.

Honestly, Stewart could've had his grittier star trek if it took place in the Mirror Universe. Then all the trauma, the "federation" would make sense for being evil, and Picard would've had a reason to move beyond some darker past. We'd simultaneously get an entire show set in the always fascinating Mirror Universe, whilst also getting a darker and edgier trek at the same time, without trampling on the mainline trek themes.

You could be right... it is notable they seem to have pointedly ruined certain core parts of the setting, which would be 'lucky' (?) if just blasting into the dark and not knowing what had gone before. Actual Trek = Post scarcity utopia. Everyone can have as much as anyone else. Picard = Scarcity dystopia. Character's envy other character's possessions. Actual Trek = Swearing regarded as unevolved and backward. Picard = Fuck that noise! Fuck you, Picard!! Actual Trek = Hopeful and thoughtful diplomacy saves the day. Picard = The day won't be saved, everything is dark and violent and brutal. Actual Trek = Humanity has moved beyond the need for narcotics and booze. Picard = Everyone is hitting the pipe or the bottle first chance they get. Actual Trek = The Federation is at its heart admirable and well intentioned. Picard = Trust no one, especially the racist Federation. Actual Trek = The Prime Directive was not to interfere with other species. Picard = The Federation 'absolutely does get to choose which species live or die'. I could go on... what a parody of a show.

Even the joy of seeing a reprised role gone bad, as Hollyweird has done in the past--such as James Garner in Maverick (1994)--Hollywood had already demonstrated not just 'bad' writing, but actively malicious and offensive intent in destroying beloved roles in the name of "social justice" or something. *propaganda nothing "proper" about it, LOL. You're absolutely right though. The franchise was always an optimistic look into our future where humanity, and other intelligent beings, set aside differences and came together to achieve something more. Presenting stories, situations, and characters in thought provoking, and intelligent ways. Although since its inception and Roddenberry being a lefty, the franchise showcased certain political biases, it was never overtly political and often left the audience to draw their own conclusions. This New Trek garbage is heavy handed in its political messages and incredibly dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. New Trek is completely soulless.

I don't know what's worse out of all this. The fact that these shows have effectively trampled and laid ruin to a great franchise in the standard visual medium, or what they've done to material like STO. I can't even get on that game anymore myself or watch people stream it because it is replete with Discovery/Picard aesthetic ships and equipment, much of it pay-to-win and overpowered compared to anything from the TOS-ENT era. No more fan service or revisitation of material from the older, decent shows and films. It's all Jar Jar Abrams and Klutzman, all the time. Probably one of the most ridiculous and egregious examples has been how you can go and play the Delta Quadrant episodes and see Seven act a bit more developed from the events of Voyager...but then do one of the newer episodes with her in it, and see her "re-imagined" and ridiculous version from Picard. It just lands like a ton of bricks and is total cringe. They couldn't even do the mission arc with the Excalbians (Savage Curtain aliens) without transplanting Nu Seven and that irritating Space Sasha (Burnham) and her asinine time traveling mom into it. Then of course they also laid waste to the Klingons as seen in the game. It's a real shame.

Like the episode where Bortus reveals he's gay and will be having a child, which will need to have a sex change as per his culture's way. Or when they got stranded on a planet where people would give you a thumbs up or down depending on your personal views, and if your thumbs down got to a certain number you'd have your mind scrambled to "help" fit in with the rest of society. It's sad I have to say this since most shows love shoving this down your throat most of the time. Here though it was presented tastefully and pretty neutral.

Yes. Yes. 100x Yes. This review/examination is spot on. You vocalized very well most of the major issues I have with Star Trek: Picard, everything from the dark premise, depressing tone, and meaningless deaths of recurring characters to the over-use of violence, gore, murder, suicide, profanity, alcohol, and throwing up. About the only thing I disagreed with was the aliens with Earth accents. I can totally deal with a Romulan who has an English or Irish accent if they get everything else right. You didn't get into the nitpick territory like the giant space flowers, the contradiction of Romulan philosophies about cybernetics (they supposedly hate & avoid cybernetic study, but they're also heading up the ex-Borg project???), Raffi's out-of-place attitude about 24th/25th century economic statuses, etc. But, you articulated very well the really big issues with the show. And, you stayed away from the common "wokeness" complaint, a complaint I don't share with most critics of Picard or Discovery, because diversity on the new shows is something I'm actually okay with. It's...just about everything else...that's wrong with Trek's new direction. Diversity? Bring it on, but make the characters likable. Darker storylines? Sure, sprinkle them in like DS9 did, but let there be some hope & optimism mixed in too. Take Trek in some new directions? Of course, but don't make it feel so different -- and don't so *intentionally* tick off part of the fanbase -- that a show or the franchise as a whole seems almost unrecognizable.

@@_XR40_ Many producers are also writers. It's common to give a writer a producer credit as a way to pay them more (one reason the show had more producers than actors). @@aleksander8497 TNG Picard was humble, but not humbled. He had one of the healthiest egos in all TV. He was confident but not arrogant. Heroic and empathetic. Thoughtful and decisive. It had him barely able to pilot a ship. Made him dress up in a silly eyepatch and put on a French accent -- like something out of Monty Python. The best parts of the series is where they reminded me of what Star Trek was with the Nepenthe episode and the finale with Data. I’ve watched the series 3 times through including the original air date, and I can say it’s a mess absolutely, the Icheb scene serves no purpose other than to enrage fandom and break their hearts; of course narratively give 7 a motivation. It felt like Picard throwing that French accent as they get ready to beam down in disguise, was making fun of fans. Of course at the end, Picard gets put into a Golem, what a perfect metaphor for Star Trek under Secret Hideout. Star Trek dies as we knew it in 2005, only to be downloaded into a puppet built by people who call it Star Trek but have no idea what that means. But hey; it’s called Star Trek you should like it. Its so cool to see a series just confront head on with reason and not have to have an ultimatum to either kill or spare lives. The new stuff definitely didn't attract me at all lol

It's the same trend happening in all these franchises. The creative classes, especially in the arts, have been taken over by a particular type of person. This person despises the rational gentile.

Best part of Star Trek Picard. Watch this android rip though Neutronium like tissue paper. 10 Mins later similar android is knocked out by a single punch from a human.

Yeah. Picard wouldn't want to be in an artificial body that could live forever or have superhuman strength. That's not what he would've wanted. They gave him a very human body, without the current failings of his original one. The fact you can't see through the haze of hatred you and others have placed over yourselves just shows that "fandom" doesn't mean intelligence, understanding or coherence in what they watch.

I would have to disagree with "They were freely allowed to create" No they weren't. Rodenberry was very strict about how stories were created. And the writers always complained that it was too difficult to write stories that way. And it's probably why we have to garbage star trek we have today, on top of the political narratives.

Indeed. TNG reached its stride when Gene left the picture in the third season due to his failing health. The writers kept his core ideals (for the most part), but finally had breathing room.

FYI: Michael Chabon's father died during production of Star Trek. That's why Picard is so bleak, dark, and violent. Michael took out his grief and misery on Star Trek Picard's writing. While I don't wish anyone to suffer, I think taking out his grief on Star Trek Picard was a terrible thing to do.

Star Trek was a way to escape our depressing reality to enter a world of wonders and discovery. But not anymore. New Trek is just a big ball of _woke_ depression.

I LOVE how this nutj0b literally says true stuff like 'Non-Fans and Idiots do not understand what Star Trek is and always, always, always has been about'! BUT he gets wrong WHO the IDIOT is! Thats mind-boogling 14-D-Chess!!! 14D!!! Kurzman is a Legend-Level or even God-Level N-Job! He mastered mental gymnastics most people dont even know about! Flatearthers do NOT hold a Candle against him; we have to respect that! C'mon, people, tweet him this Video's URL and/or even my Comment's URL, if you'd be so nice! C'mon! Lets see what happens if we try so.

I started watching Star Trek TNG a few years ago precisely to escape the doom, gloom, horror and violence of most modern shows. Game of Thrones is an example of a show that could have been great to watch but the sickening gratuitous violence instead made it traumatic and unwatchable for many. They need to either leave Star Trek in peace or continue it in line with its original ethos of peace, positivity, hope, problem solving, collaboration and creativity.

I tried watching that on a plane back on like 2014. Couldn't. Too much pornography. Thought I'd give the books a try. Came across a passage of one the characters describing the baby batter as he (or she) had relations with their twin.... Nope I'm done.

I can't agree. Outside season 8 and a few episodes in season 5, GoT was remarkable not just because it showed violence well, but had great characters and writing to back it up. Granted, so did Star Trek TNG, but people turned off by GoT because of violence sound like the same people that hate pulp fiction but like bigbangtheory and friends where your entire scope of thinking is limited to a 4th or 5th grade relative IQ.

@@beloved-child @beloved child What an odd comment. You're like those critics who love any film or TV show as long as it's full of disturbing violent scenes, but despise anything uplifting and positive. You're equating enjoying watching violence to maturity. I'd say the opposite is true. The world is violent enough, anyone who doesn't wish to see more of that on a screen is wise and most likely values a deep sense of peace and well-being.
@beloved-child

@@katec9893 your wording shows everyone reading you can't separate character, depth, plot, or anything on film I'd it simply has violence in it, which means you hate tons of great cinema simply because it portrays violence. Dismissing GoT simply because of violence shows your bias, and thankfully, most film lovers and film makers strongly disagree with you. GoT episode 3-3 and 4-6 are great examples of low to no violence episodes that are excellent due to characters and writing. If most movie goers we're like you, pulp fiction would be considered a bad film, saving private Ryan? Crap. Scarface? Bad. Cuz violence. You criticize me for loving cinema that does violence well, but I watch tons of stuff without violence and am fine with it. You can't even give great cinema a chance because you can't get over your dislike for something that is simply a part of reality. Good luck enjoying so little with such a closed mindset.

I actually subscribed to Netflix in order to watch Star Trek Discovery, but was forced to wait months until the show finally materialised due to 'production delays'; after three or four episodes, I realised it wasn't worth the wait and cancelled my contract. Thanks to Picard airing on Amazon, I managed to completely dodge that bullet. Right now, I'm revisiting the original show, which I've been a fan of since it reached the UK in 1969.

From what we've seen of Season 2 7 of 9 was never a Borg so 100% human now which means Picard could be 100% human again, kinda defeats all the writing but that's very much like Discovery where they forget or ignore the past season

I don't know about you guys... but I had a horrible time as a teenager. Bullied at school and beaten at home. My dad's alcoholism was at it's peak, I was having these feelings of being attracted to other guys which caused guilt and feelings of self hate. I did badly in all my classes because I just wasn't able to retain information like other kids, I feared I wasn't intelligent enough to amount to anything in life. I swung between hating myself and hating the world around me. Then came along TNG, then the amazing DS9 and then Voyager. I watched every day after school on BBC2 at 6pm on the dot. Star Trek provided escapism. Star Trek gave me comfort. The enlightened world of the Federation showed me there could be a better, brighter future - which celebrated intelligence and calm and fairness and there might be some point to this chaotic ride called life. Then came along Alex Kurtzman. PEW PEW, camera shake, crying for no reason, men are bad, PEW PEW
