As long as the construct was appropriating the Protostar’s technology, even if it was drastic, it was the only viable option. It’s just sad because it was a good ship for the time we the audience and Dal and the crew spent with her. It was a relatively brief experience compared to other starships that we have known, but nevertheless a noble one.

They found a way to save her in Season 2: the Doctor copied her program onto an EMH backup module like the one from Living Witness.

Some fans’ mileage may vary, but I suspect the context of the scene made the gravity of the situation that much more poignant. But to elaborate, it was originated by a kid that had visions of wonder looking out onto space. To some, it is as pure a command as one might realize. To have Holo Janeway adapt it for this last act is not only a sign of respect, but in her own way, love for her crew.

Because the holdo maneuver was stupid. Totally different technology and a different use. Holdo maneuver was a useless waste of a ship. And they keep retconning after the movie why it wasn't used more often. Warp speed and even protowarp isn't light speed like hyperspace. When an object reaches the speed of light, it obtains infinite mass. Hence you could take an x-wing, or for that matter a probe the size of a beach ball as long as it has a hyperdrive and accomplish the same thing. Also hyperspace ramming is stupid because it completely negates the need for a Death Star when you can just ram a ship or 2 into a planet to destroy it. Does it look cool? Yes the vfx were amazing. Was it still stupid? Absolutely.

This wasn't ramming anything into anything, it was self destructing the ship at proto-warp.

The "Holdo Maneuver" doesn't work in-universe for two reasons; 1) Established based on in-movie dialogue "input the wrong coordinates and you could run into a star or asteroid" meaning the coordinates have to be exact in order to reach a designated location, 2) any vessel entering hypersapce wouldn't be able to "slice" through another vessel because the mass shadows wouldn't align which would negate the potential. If the vessel Holdo was piloting actually had slammed into the Resurgence it would have either; A) exploded upon impact as it hadn't truly achieved full lightspeed or B) the impact with the Resurgence would have taken out the entire vessel and a large segment of the First Order fleet along with everyone aboard the vessels, which means; Rey, Poe, Finn, Kylo, and Phasma would have died in the blast as well The use of the Protostar's detonation was because it was a sacrificial maneuver to preserve Starfleet while the explosion was an attenuated blast of the protostar within the core to lessen it's deadly effect. One is for "look a cool visual" and the other is akin to "I'm going down, but you all live"
