The biggest problem with Star Trek: The Motion Picture is that it's too long, so I re-edited it taking out all the bits that weren't important to the central story, apart from a few bits I liked.

In 1979 we hadn't yet been saturated with 30 years of CGI/FX-driven movies and TV shows. Star Wars was 2 years old and Empire Strikes Back was still a year away. Alien was released the same year. We also hadn't seen Trek cast/crew in anything new in 10 years. So when TMP came out, many of us were willing to sit through it in the theater (multiple times) to drink in and savor all of it. There was no guarantee of another movie or TV series. Almost all of the special effects still hold up. Not as satisfying to watch as Wrath of Khan, of course, but I still enjoy watching the full-length TMP.

I remember those days so well. There was a huge write-in campaign courtesy of Starlog Magazine. The magnitude of the write-in campaign and the Star Trek conventions combined with the success of Star Wars made Star Trek: The Motion Picture possible. We were so starved for Star Trek that we enjoyed this movie in spite of it's thin plot and boring story line.

This film was the most thought provoking film of the Star Trek franchise. Basically a machine intelligence is questioning why it exists, what is the purpose of existence? It knows everything that can be known in the universe, and it is questioning why it exists, and is there more to existence than just knowledge. It was a very profound film, and under-rated.

The whole point of setting up V'ger to be "an incredible enemy" was to show that its power exceeded that of the federation and that the only way to defeat it would be through reason, not force. They didn't "beat" V'ger, they gave it the answer it had come searching for. This is the whole point of the film. This is real Sci-fi, about big ideas, not some dumb JJ Abrams abortion that needs to culminate in an visually congested space battle.

Spock's scene where he cries for V'ger is also important to the movie. The movie is much about Spock's personal development as it is about V'ger. And comes full circle with Spock giving advice to his Kelvin Timeline younger self in the 2009 movie.

Keep in mind that it was a reunion film for those fans who were waiting, after rumors of phase II, to see star trek again. There had to be a milking of perspective scenes that show how big the enterprise is and the vastness of startfleet an technology that was not shown in the original series of the 60s. It was a visual love affair between the fans and what was shown on the screen.

God damn I miss movies like this. I saw this as a kid and it generated absolute wonder deep within my soul. The spacedock scenes everyone seems to feel were so long were like the Enterprise making love with my imagination. Pure love. It works because that's the way you would react if you were there, on that shuttle instead of Kirk. Just drinking in the magnificence of this huge, amazing thing in front of you. And then the music pushes that feeling of wonder to it's ultimate level.

I think my video summarises the good bits of this film pretty well. The main reason to watch the whole film would be to see the extended SFX sequences, if that's the kinda thing that floats your boat. They do look amazing though. Think 2001: a space odyssey, but slightly slicker and less psychedelic. If you wanted to watch more Star Trek films then 2, 4 and 6 would have my highest recommendation (yes, the even numbered ones).

Very nicely done. I tried something like this 6-years ago for, "Willow," to make it 10-minutes long and it was promptly deleted by KZfaq staff. Nice to know they're more lenient with videos today. I didn't know anyone liked it. It's slow and boring with a lame attempt to be like the 2001 stargate sequence. To make that good you need someone like Kubrick, a reasonable deadline, and more funds. And some scenes make no sense.
@betaneptune5 жыл бұрын
No, but it's a 30-minute plot stretched out to 2 hours and change. I still remember sitting in the movie theater thinking, "Why are we seeing the Enterprise for so long? Can we please get on with it?!" And: "Alright. Enough of the blue and purple clouds already. Let's get the story going again." (Both paraphrased. That was a long time ago!) I think the stargate sequence and what follows had the wrong music. It's like trying to follow 2001's stargate sequence as a new movie form, but Kubrick kept things moving and the music he chose matched the visuals much better. And the special effects crew was given too tight a deadline and too little money, at least according to another video I saw about it.

Issac Assimov is probably one of the fathers, or if not THE father of modern science fiction, true science fiction that went into the real of philosophy. Although he and Gene Roddenberry were later friend, he attacked Star Trek at the beginning for being inaccurate in many ways and even thought it was "dumb". Gene had to explain that his true goal with Trek was to make some of the issues important to sci-fi accessible to general audiences and TV also had big limitations.

From Memory Alpha: "According to the Borg Queen, the species known as the Borg started out as normal lifeforms without any cybernetic enhancements thousands of centuries ago. Over the years, they evolved into a mixture of organic and artificial life. It is believed that the Borg originated in the Delta Quadrant, where they already existed in 1484. At that time, only a handful of star systems had been assimilated by them." So the Borg pre-date the events of TMP by a long way.

A one-hour edit would capture more nuance, of course. Plus you could have that scene where Kirk sees the Enterprise for the first time in years, with that wonderful Goldsmith score. Just saw this video, viewed the comments and saw one was from 10 years ago and that was 2011. Ten years ago? Where did time go. It's 2021 and I'm seeing this for the first time. I loved this movie, it is a real Star Trek movie, confronting issues like Spock acting like a computer, Kirk commandeering the ship, Doc bitching as usual, etc. But what I liked so much is the overall story, yes it is a little too long, the Klingons who looked like some angry predator roaming the jungle, seeing the old crew back and the newly rebuilt Enterprise. It's more than a popcorn movie, but popcorn works well at the theater. It is a thinking person's movie. This is what Star Trek was all about. Not cowboy and Indians fighting it out, no mindless shootouts, no massive explosions, no bare naked women, it was Star Trek.

As much as it may be seen as a long drawn out film... I think a ten minute version is waaay too short to have any impact.... it only works for us because we have all seen the movie. Well done! I remember seeing this as a young boy when it was first released and it was interminable. Nothing happens for SUCH a long time, there's so little action! Though it may have been a little drawn-out without much to the plot, it still had a top-notch & cutting-edge soundtrack, and a lot of the special effects were well done. It is what introduced me to Star Trek in 1983, when I was 6, so I'll always have an affinity for it. For the plot, it has a rather eerie, dark, mysterious, and suspenseful feel. I enjoy the nostalgic trip, but it is sad that those days are gone forever.

How did V-Ger accumulate all the knowledge in the universe in less than 300 years? Also, Decker says it was launched "over 300 years ago", Voyager II launched in 1977. VI would have launched after that. ST The Motion Picture was set in 2273. That's less than 300 years after launch. Finally, when Decker merged with the probe, did they become Q?

I can't believe I'm saying this, because I thought that The Motion Picture was the most boring Star Trek movie, even if it wasn't the worst--that honor goes to 5 and the TNG movies--but I think that this edit actually cuts out too much. There's some good stuff with Spock on Vulcan, and I like Jim's return to the Enterprise. Still, I feel like the problem with this movie was that they were trying too hard to go for a 2001 thing. It compromised the pace and the visual look drastically.

Back in 1979 we called it "The Slow-Motion Picture." Everybody so so excited for fresh Star Trek (especially after Star Wars) but I remember we all felt pretty disappointed after this snooze fest (though not as much as we did after "Return of the Jedi"). Thank God it made enough money to warrant a sequel.
@glsgareth11 жыл бұрын
The movie didn't seem slow to me, but I saw it in 1979 and was probably drunk at the time. I had seen Star Wars a couple years earlier and was happy to see sci-fi making a resurgence, but while Star Wars was a classic space opera, this movie was barely an improvement over the trash that passed as 1970s sci-fi since Kubrick's "2001". These days young people think it was a steady progression from TOS to the movies to TV, but at the time, we never thought it would come back. It had been 9 years!

And the 2001: a space odyssey stargate sequence, but nowhere near as good. Notice the funny sounds near the end when they're finally by the probe itself. Just like in 2001, but again, not nearly as good. Shows how important Kubrick was, and admittedly, giving enough time for the special effects crew to do a good job. I've seen a video that claimed they really had to rush it, and in true TOS style, with a low budget.

I wouldn't say it's hard to watch, it's definitely slowly paced, which the Directors cut helps to fix, but during those long drawn out sequences, it's more about the admiration of the special effects, which I was surprised at how good they were, then about the story or plot. It felt very unique as a film since it's focus was on landscape and philosophy instead of "action and drama" as which is seen so common nowadays.

I don't believe Gene Roddenberry never really wanted to turn Star Trek into an action story. Sure there are space battles, but overall, Star Trek that really most of us love is slow, procedural, with very good writing. The Next Generation basically. While there have been good Star Trek action films, the only director that in my opinion who was good at them was Nicholas Meyer. JJ Abrams just makes "guilty pleasures".
