It's not a bad movie, though they could have gone with a younger director who could pull off a Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001: A Space Odyssey vibe while make it in a Trek way. 6.8/10

Love the Director's Editon, it's so much better than the original theatrical cut.

Always thought this is a true masterpiece of Sci Fi, to be 'experienced' rather than watched like a conventional movie. For this reason I think it's the greatest FIlm in the Trek franchise, even if not the best at _being_ Star Trek, but I'd easily put this up there with 2001. I'm with you on these new FX, while some do work, there's some truly bizarre additions that would make George Lucas cringe. Such as the conference room scene that's as bad as the 'Ecce Homo' restoration. But much, much worse is the new soundtrack. While it's laudable for the team to restore original elements, they forgot to do a remotely professional mix. Kirk's intro, he's walking through a cavernous hall, yet the dialogue sounds like they're talking in a booth.. Also the constant ship engine, or thruster sounds added to every craft (in space of course) completely distract from the flow of the scene and even, unforgivably, Goldsmith's majestic score. Spock's spacewalk was always my go-to scene for showing off Trek to the uninitiated, simply a perfectly produced sequence of FX and music - in this version they've awkwardly re-edited it in places for no apparent reason, changed the sound of the thruster suit to a weird hiss, which reduces the danger and risk you feel Spock is taking, and they take out the warning message which I always loved. I know that most, if not all these additions were done under Robert Wise's supervision in the previous Director's Edition, but I definitely feel a golden opportunity has been wasted here, giving us a great restoration, but covered in cheap tinsel.

I love it and love it even more now. It's the most epic and magical of all the Star Trek movies and for me does the best job of capturing the essence of the show it was born from. The finest big screen experience of Star Trek that there will most likely ever be.

If you get a chance watch this new 4K version on the big screen. It looks terrific and the film is very enjoyable.

I find this new edit subtly emphasises the character arcs in a way I never appreciated before. Decker coming around on Kirk and transcending his jealousy. Spock learning the folly of Kholinar and the value of emotion from V'ger. Kirk re-learning his humility from Decker and his own repeated screw-ups. Decker and Ilia's love story, while sparse, hits home better now - especially after she is replaced. Maybe I'm just older and wiser, but the movie hits very differently from the slow, sterile, stilted experience I remember. It's still lacking in character warmth and emotional consistency, and it's still a bit navel-gaze-y, but it's a far better film for the tweaks they've given it. A loving restoration, I would say.

Now in the deleted scenes we find out that the Klingon Battle Cruisers were not destroyed but in reality was stored and recorded in V’Ger’s memory as seen just before Spock attempts a Mind Meld on the red probe on Ilia.

I also highly recommend Gene Roddenberry’s novelization of TMP. In it he goes into depth describing Kirk’s tremendous regret in accepting promotion to admiralty going insofar as to providing an emotional encounter/meeting with Nogura not shown in the film itself. Roddenberry also provides further insight into the mindset of Spock as he struggles to complete the Kholinar while reconciling his Vulcan need to expunge his emotions with the human need to maintaining close friendships, chiefly his deep bond with Kirk. Likewise he further fleshes out the relationship between Decker and Ilia giving it more substance and stakes. Another tidbit for example is that Deltans are known to excrete pheromones that make them hard to resist. This is why the crew goes gaga over Ilia. I know any movie should never require a book to explain things but in this case it makes the experience of watching TMP that much more rich. It truly is hard to not say how extraordinarily underrated TMP is after reading the novelization, dissecting it’s many themes such as exploring purpose and human connections and lastly it’s amazing visual and musical feats that are incredibly impressive and outright iconic.

It would be amazing if star trek would confirm the species who found and repaired the Voyager 6 probe really were the Borg.

I actually love the motion picture - and I think you had great insight when you stated that in a time of 'pew pew' - this is a refreshing change of pace. It certainly is the most epic of the movies and looks like a theatrical film. It also breaks away from the tired Wrath of Khan plot line. The only thing that gnaws at me are the bad science moments such as goofy terms like '12th power energy' or plasma energy combination' - whatever that means or that Veeger is 82 AU's in diameter [way too large] or the asteroid in the wormhole was measured to be .7kg in mass [way too small considering the size on screen']. That attention to detail would have been appreciated.

The studio wanted to capitalize on the success of Star Wars. But this movie feels like it was competing with 2001. The plot feels derivative of some episodes of TOS, which is why the big twist with Vger wasn’t that surprising to anyone who had watched the TV series. Star Trek’s first pilot was described as too cerebral lacking action or the sense of fun that would later characterize the series. This movie feels like Roddenberry wanted to return Star Trek to his vision in that first pilot. The characters here are almost secondary. They exist to advance the plot. It’s no secret the script was being rewritten while they were shooting. And that’s never more clear than with the ending. How does Decker merge with Vger? Why does merging with it help Vger evolve? How does evolving cause Vger to disappear? It’s as if the writers had no idea how to resolve the story and just concocted something at the last minute.
