Star Trek fans may recognize this starship as an Ambassador class design, first appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation as the USS Enterprise 1701-C! Propstore's Stephen Lane explains how it was first made and then later rebuilt by legendary modelmaker Greg Jein, with this model serving as several different Ambassador class ships that appeared throughout 90s-era Star Trek.

I grew up a fan of TNG. Seeing that the Ambassador Class model is still holding up well after 30+ years shows how much care Greg Jein really put into building this model, I hope that one day someone will figure out how to convert her to LEDs so that she can be displayed in her full glory.

When I saw this I yelled out "Enterprise C!!" To hear the history that this was NOT the C, but the same type of Ambassador class starship was fascinating. BUT even more so, the revelation that Greg Jein did not detail them up close as there was no need for that level of detail for what would be visible on tv screen of the day... well, that just blew my mind. Thanks Adam and thank Propstore. If I win the lotto tonight, this and the Superman suit and mannequin are must-buys for me.

@@Sky_Guy To me, the Narendra-class (as it's called in STO) looks more futuristic than the Galaxy-class. Yes it's cooler, and it's cool we see a half-bust of it in the Ready Room sometimes, but it doesn't look like a step between the Excelsior- and Galaxy-classes the way the Ambassador does. It's also interesting to see how the Cryptic design team has 'updated' some of the older designs for a 25th century Starfleet in the game, as well as adding some new designs. I'm especially fond of the Manticore-class.

As a total sci-fi ship nerd, I LOVE the design of the neck on this ship. I also love the obvious evolution from the ambassador to galaxy class with this model.
@ssvis2
@ssvis2 Жыл бұрын
TNG, DS9, and Voyager all did a really good job of keeping ship continuity. It made sense as each new (or intermediate) class of ship was revealed, like they all fit into a logical evolution. Enterprise had a great ship design but it felt out of place as a pre-TOS ship. It looked more advanced than even the Constitution class refit or Excelsior (one of my favorites, BTW).
@patreekotime4578

@@ssvis2 thats because Berman and Braga decided to digitally modify an the existing Akira-class design from First Contact instead of create a true pre TOS primative starship. Maybe they did that to save time and money, but it stands out as one of the worst ship design continuities in Trek history. At least the new shows are trying to be a bit more true to canon.

The ambassador class is such a lovely ship. It's a shame they didn't use it more often. I love how it's such a perfect in-between for the Galaxy and the Excelsior. It has phaser strips instead of the specific phaser points, but they are still directional instead of going all the way around the saucer. A very well designed ship.

I am truly saddened and sorry to hear about Greg Jein's passing. He was a funny, talented and a giving guy. I first met Greg in 1973 when I was 15 at a Star Trek Convention in L.A. where he was exhibiting one of his 'DOMES' from my all-time favorite film, (and the reason I would later become a produced screenwriter and award-winning commercial director) ... thanks to Douglas Trumbull's 'SILENT RUNNING.' (1971) Greg and I had a long yak about the creation of the shooting prop, 'THE U.S.S. VALLEY FORGE' and to my eternal blessing about a week later -- Greg sent me two of the tiny greeblies that had fallen off the original 25-foot model that had been stored in Doug Trumbull's garage post-film. In 1981, I was 22 ... Greg kindly invited me down from San Francisco to the efx stage (the old original Star Trek's HOWARD ANDERSON COMPANY) for Francis Coppola's 'ONE FROM THE HEART' … I got to watch for several hours many of his models and moving backgrounds for the background plates for some desert car shots. He then invited me to a great lunch with the filming model crew at some burger joint nearby. Greg Jein made a difference to many ... and to this day, myself at 64 ... still does. Rest easy, good Greg. It was a pleasure and an honor to even slightly know you ever so long ago. D.A.

The Yamaguchi refit of the Ambassador-class is one of my favorite non-hero ship designs, and not because of any particular appearance but because the designers and model-makers took the time, instead of simply using the same ship again, took the time to design a refit of the ship - the lowered nacelles and the cowling on the bussard collectors, the assembly in the middle of the deflector dish, and the repositioned neck and saucer connection all helps makes Starfleet's fleet feel more alive than just simply copy and pasting the same designs over and over.

I lived in Bristol (UK) for about 20 years and there was a Sci Fi shop that had a very large model of the Enterprise D hanging in from the rafters of the shop. It looked fantastic.

I loved this design. A great transition design between the B and D. Funny hearing Adam talk about the model's quality between being up against it and then taking a step back and it all comes together. I got that same reaction when I got to see a few matte paintings in Chicago during a VFX exhibition. One was the ROTJ rebel hanger shot and another was the Ghostbusters building. Up close it was just a mess but take a few steps back and it looked realistic.

The Ambassador class ships are hands down my favourite of the Federation designs. It's just so perfectly... balanced. Like, if you asked someone to just "draw a Starfleet ship", it'd likely look just like this. Circular saucer (no oblong ovals), round nacelles and engineering section hull... and it all just sits in the right proportions. Such a joy to look at and I thoroughly enjoyed this close up look at a studio model of one - impressive how they used those stickers for the lifeboats and saved a pile of time!

Oh this is fantastic, the ambassador class is my favourite starship design :) It was actually made in quite a hurry, and ended up being quite different from its concept design. It was originally designed with a more oval saucer section, like the galaxy class, and a more flattened engineering hull, again like the galaxy class, but because Yesterday's Enterprise was on such a tight schedule, they rounded out those two elements to make the models easier to build. Of course whats funny about that is that very early in the show there was a wall in the observation lounge that had little gold models of all the past enterprises, including the original design of the ambassador, now made inconsistent with the appearance of this model :) Personally I like the rounded elements. Gives the ambassador both an "old school" (ie the original series) vibe, and a lot of character compared to other ships we see in tng like the excelsior or of course the galaxy.

The Ambassador Class is my favorite class of Star Ship. Just a beautiful design always wished we had got a series with this class.

This is probably my favorite version of the Enterprise. I am looking forward to 3D Printing it in 1/200 scale.

I love to see these kinds of original handcrafted models close up. I feel like this design has oddly stubby nacelles for my taste, relative to the saucer section, but it still looks very cool.

@7:21 behind where the bridge unit and the top row of windows are, that section inset with all the grills on it above the shuttlebay is where the top mounting point is based on photographs of the model in action.

I was afraid they would ignore this model since it was from Star Trek. Great to actually see it up close.

The observation that the model is a bit rough in the fine detailing at extreme close range, yet instantly gells into a convincing representation of a massive starship from just slightly farther away reminds me of nothing so much as impressionist paintings. Up close, they're literally blobs of paint that convey nothing. Yet step back a few paces and those indistinct splashes of color resolve into a cohesive image. I always marveled that the impressionist masters, laboriously apply paint just inches from the canvas, could produce that kind of result. I have to think that Greg Jein, in his own way, was no less of an impressionist master.
