It has become beta canon that the "little blonde lab technician" that Kirk says he almost married is none other than Carol Marcus from ST2:TWOK. A lot of people still believe that Gary "Mitchell" Lockwood made the conscious decision to tilt his head back to arrogantly look down upon the mortals. The truth was that he couldn't see well at all through those contacts, so that was the only way he could visually get around and not trip over things. He has a major role in the film _2001: A Space Odyssey,_ and he was the star of Gene Roddenberry's previous TV series, _The Lieutenant._ Sally Kellerman appears in two classic _Outer Limits_ episodes but is probably best remembered as "Hot Lips" in the film version of _M*A*S*H._ As far as the Barrier goes, it has been completely ignored in Berman Trek. Writer David "Tribbles" Gerrold personally sneered at the idea of the galaxy having an edge, saying it would be like trying a bisect a sneeze. Well, in recent times, it seems scientists _have_ discovered something that corresponds to an energy barrier around the Milky Way. Ah-choo on that, David.

Airdate: September 22, 1966. This was the first planned debut date for the series, before NBC decided to jump the gun two weeks ahead of the other networks. The producers stuck to their guns, finshed the post production effects they way they wanted, last minute edits as well. The result is what we saw, and we were all better for it :)

The silver eyes were apparently painful and the actor had to peer below them to see anything, so the way he arrogantly held his head is accidental, but it worked well. This is one of my favorite episodes, and i think it may have been the inspiration for the X-Men Phoenix saga, which borrows a lot from this.

Paul Fix played Dr. Mark Piper in this episode, which was the second pilot episode of Star Trek TOS. Paul Fix was a well-known movie and TV character actor who played "Marshal Micah Torrance" on the TV series The Rifleman (1958). He played Newspaper Editor Colbey in an episode of The Twilight Zone in 1964, Sam Burke in an episode of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea in 1966, Henderson in an episode of The Time Tunnel in 1966, Joe Taylor in an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man in 1974 and Commander Kronus in an episode of Battlestar Galactica in 1979. He had roles in major classic Hollywood films including Scarface, After The Thin Man, Sherlock Holmes and The Secret Weapon, Red River, Hondo, Giant, The Bad Seed, To Kill A Mockingbird and El Dorado. He passed away in 1983 at age 82.

This convinced the network to go for it. The look and even the characters are still being sorted out. The first pilot was turned down. Roddenberry promised a western set in space lots of fun fights and such. But he had other plans from the start. A future where everyone works together and they explore. While subtlety touching on subjects TV of the time couldn't if everyone was human 😉

Must have just been insane high quality for TV in the 60s, I can't imagine what it must've been like at the time! (even with the original FX) The colors must've been like the first time you see 4k for the first time or something!

There were several American sci-fi TV series in color with lots of special effects in the mid- to late 1960s in addition to Star Trek, including The Invaders, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost In Space, and Land of the Giants. Some of these shows started out in black-and-white and later switched to color. As a kid in the 1960s, I watched all of these in their original runs. Star Trek was the best of them all. FYI, shows that started before the 1965-1966 season or premiered in black-and-white during that season were required to convert to color at the start of the 1966-1967 season, which was the season Star Trek first aired. By 1968, primetime networks were broadcasting 90% of their shows in color. My family got its first color TV on Christmas of 1965. BTW, in the 1980s, as part of my work for the government, I saw an early demonstration of High-Definition TV (HDTV) at the David Sarnoff Research Center (DSRC) in Princeton, NJ. Seeing HDTV for the first time was more impressive to me than seeing color TV for the first time or seeing 4K for the first time (4K seems to me like just an incremental improvement over 1080p, but 1080p was a huge improvement over the analog broadcast resolution equivalent of about 480i.) The pioneering work of scientists at the DSRC included the inventions of color television and liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the co-invention of high-definition television (HDTV), and numerous improvements in an array of fields relating to electronics.

Yeah, this is the second pilot. Did you notice the incorrect middle initial on the gravestone? His name is James Tiberius Kirk, but the middle initial was "R" on the stone. They hadn't settled on his middle name when this second pilot was shot.
@zoppie
@zoppie 28 күн бұрын
As the "R" is no longer canon, one wonders why it wasn't corrected in the remastered version. My headcanon says Mitchell knew damn well it was T, but he was hoping Kirk would ask him where the "R" came from. So he could say, "I'm changing your middle name to "Ratfink." A god's prerogative."

Great reaction I’m glad you had a good time. Yes, the budget was hired on an episode because it’s actually a second pilot Star Trek is the first show to have two pilots. The first pilot called the cage. They said it was too cerebral had a different actor as captain of the enterprise, he was called Captain Christopher Pike Doors from science officer, but there was a woman officer who becomes the nurse on the enterprise that we know chapel was the wife of the creator of the show they wasted they were use the cage pilot in the show the two-parter the menagerie you’ll see the whole pilot which is the first time pilots ever been used inside a TV show Cause pilots either Lucille Ball like the show and she owns the studio that made the show So she saves Star Trek the first time you’re doing a great job. Thanks for the fun until next time.

And yes, this was the *second* pilot that was shot. The first one, "The Cage", had an almost entirely different cast; Leonard Nimoy was the only character who carried through from the first pilot to the second, and then into the series, (Majel Barrett also came through to the main series, but played an entirely different character than she did in the 1st pilot.) The first pilot was rejected by the network, but the studio believed in the concept enough to risk spending money on a second one that would be more to the network's liking. Because it *is* a pilot, it does look different, because they re-used some of the sets (particularly the bridge) and costumes from the 1st pilot. The re-casting of the various roles was due to a variety of factors; some of the actors were no longer available due to having taken other roles elsewhere between pilots 1 and 2, some characters were changed due to the feedback from the network (they particularly disliked Majel Barrett's role as "Number One", Captain Pike's second-in-command), and the actor Jeffrey Hunter, who played Captain Pike in the 1st pilot, declined to return to the role for a second pilot. (Supposedly, he didn't want to be tied up doing a TV series, and wanted to be free to take movie roles instead. Some accounts claim that was more his wife's idea than his own; she felt he was worth a lot more than a weekly TV show would pay him... but I don't think that's ever been confirmed as such, so it's probably just one of those Hollywood rumors.) Strangely enough, this is the *only* episode in which that colorful "phaser rifle" ever appeared, although it was also used in some early promotional photos. For a long time, they thought the original prop had been lost, or had been disassembled and the bits re-used for something else, but a few years ago it turned up in the possession of the original prop-maker, Reuben Klamer, who had simply taken it home with him after Roddenberry decided that they weren't going to use it again. (Apparently, it was too "lethal-looking" for his liking.) Klamer put it up for auction, along with the original studio paperwork, in 2016, and it sold for $231,000. The new owner recently put it up for sale again in 2021, and it sold for $615,000.

FYI this was the "second Pilot" in 1965 - the prior 1st pilot was "The Cage" in 1964. then we have "the Combomite Manuver", then Charlie x, then "the man trap" (or vise versa per those last two). thats why the odd uniforms and Spock saying he had an ancestor that was human instead of "my mother was human". note his extra green color and extreme eyebrows - both remain, but are downplayed after. you saw Charlie X and Man Trap so must have seen Spock looks different here vs there.

This is one of my favorite episodes of the original series! Thought provoking story! This episode is revisited in a most exceptional novel called "Strangers From the Sky" written by the talented Margaret Wander Bonanno. The novels are not considered "canon" but i don't care one bit about such things. My mind is open to great stories whether they are "canon" or not and "Strangers From the Sky" is epic, particularly since it featured in its story critical scenes from this episode.

Gary Mitchell was Kirk's best friend. Now, over time we get to watch Spock fill that void. At this point he simply regards Spock as a highly efficient officer, but somewhat cold and passionless. Kirk doesn't quite "get" Spock yet.

This is the pilot. It wasn't aired as the second or first episode. If you're watching this in the proper lease order. You should have watched Charlie X then watch this one. In Charlie X, you first see sulu as the helmsman. Where no man has gone before is the second pilot episode. It had the budget of a television movie. The first pilot had the budget of a theatrical movie. The cut in the budget for the second pilot was accidental. They already had the sets and the clothes from the first episode pilot. The reason everything looks different in the series is because they had to repaint and redesign some of the ship's interior and clothes to reflect what network's concern of not enough color in the show. TV had just gone to color and the network was afraid that the color would not show clearly on a small (large for its time) television. They were correct when it came to the green lime color of the command shirts, they looked gold on the television.

This is episode 3 but was filmed before all the other episodes. The studio reviewed it and wanted changes to make the show less cerebral and more like Wagon train in the stars. They also wanted changes to Spock because some people in Conservative Christian areas thought Spock look like the devil. Notice he is emotional in this episode. Also, the episodes of the original series were remastered years ago and they enhanced and created new background images including the way planets looked to make them look more real. They CGI'd it to death to entertain a younger audience who demand high quality graphics.

I think the people who advised you not to watch the original pilot first are wrong. “The Cage” is one of the best Star Trek episodes ever, across all series. The crew is mostly different, including a different captain. The network thought it was too cerebral, but that’s what makes it so impressive. They rehashed it later in the series as a two parter- “The Menagerie,” which is told in flashbacks cut and pasted together. No way is it better than the original uncut version. So please consider watching “The Cage,” and see Star Trek as it might have been.

Yes, this was the second pilot that actually sold the series to the suits. The first pilot was "too cerebral" and this one made up for it with fistfights and murder. Still pretty sci-fi, however. They hadn't settled on costumes and cast yet, and Spock was much more clipped and stand-offish than later. Once a few episodes were in the can they got their groove. Gary was crushed by the rock, not just trapped. The eyes were done with silver foil contacts that were very irritating.

4:20 "They stepped up the budget for this episode" -- Not really. What you're seeing are the "remastered" versions, where some of the original effects work has been enhanced or replaced by CGI. The series was remastered in 2006 for its 40th anniversary, with Michael and Denise Okuda (artists and designers on pretty much every Star Trek movie and TV series since "The Voyage Home" and Next Generation). As far as I know, pretty much all online-streaming and broadcast platforms use the remastered versions now; if you want to see the original F/X work, you need to get the 2009 Blu-Ray releases, which give you the choice between original F/X or remastered F/X.

This episode was the Second Pilot - you should watch the First Pilot!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its excellent, yes there was film used in it for 2 episodes of the Series Star Trek - but watching the ORIGINAL Pilot DOES NOT SPOIL latter footage of that pilot in the ST TV Series (Trust me). The original Pilot - 1964 - was fab (but no Shatner, only a good looking lesser actor Jeremy Hunter - who's wife talked him out of being in scifi TV - so ya for the wife! - lol, no. but maybe? Shatner was a better actor, but Jeff should have just todl his wife to shut it and gone on to promote ST..............in the alternate universe, instead we have the real world, Jeff Hunter was in the Pilot, Shatner was in all the rest. YES the Pilot (which was never aired on TV back then BTW) was used in 2 episodes if ST, and evectively..................and a way that does not deny you checking out the Original original Pilot episode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! seriously, - watching the original pilot (which is very good) does not "spoil" film used from it in 2 latter ST episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they used it well and no spoil effect per seeing the original Pilot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the positions of the Stars. If you knew anything about navigation you would have known this. But you grew up on GPS. I doubt seriously that you ever had to read a map, use a compass or even thought about navigate to geography or astrology. Your comment points to your ignorance regarding navigation and the history of navigation.

Yours is a needlessly brutal and somewhat inaccurate comment. Not everyone knows a lot about navigation and its history, especially astral navigation. Not a required core competency in society. Could you converse about LORAN, LF Beacons, TACAN, or RNAV, for instance? And GPS does indeed use maps, just on a screen. Finally, everyone knows that those points of light are royal dead guys watching us. 🦁

"Command and Compassion is a fools mixture" such a script - who wrote the script here? 5 stars. Is fully wrong but fully right per 1984/brave new world/etc.............. in the ideal world command demands compassion - there is on conflict. in the real world, well maybe 60/40 pr 40/60...............etc,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Gary's character was weak so when he got powers he easily forgot Humility and morality (Compassion) for the sake of power. (Command). Gary (RIP Gary Lockwood one of the best actors of all time IMO) was wrong, the best leaders combine Command and Compassion to instill followers to them. but what do i know, Gary reads minds and books in seconds, and I never read a mind and it takes me weeks to read a book. So I probably an insect that deserves death, and Gary is God (whit an ego to squish me for some reason - go figure).
