I have to be fair and admit that this unfinished Star Trek game does not appear to be too bad. It is certainly not-yet finished, but it shows true promise, and Bandai was heading in the right directions. I believe that if I had played this game as one of my weekend rentals as a child, I would have been pleased. The gameplay looks solid and intuitive enough to be picked up and played, there was a nice following of the film's plot, and a bit of nice diversification and detail that I would have appreciated. I like how you can play as some of the different members of the Enterprise and the look of the various sprites; plus the graphics are especially pleasing for its time, the Creation Planet in-particular. I wonder now how it is that they would have concluded up this game had it not been abandoned, or what the developers could have added / fixed if their work was continued. This game's legacy is much akin to that of the Trek film it is based upon - not bad with under-realized potentials that would have made it better.

Of all genres that you think of when you think Star Trek (point-&-click, rpg, text adventure, naval combat, space shooter), they went with *run-&-gun???*

It reminds me a little of Star Wars Empire Strikes Back for NES/Game Boy.

Wow, they actually went and implemented the (beloved) warp drive effect from The Motion Picture! In an NES game! A game about a movie that effect is not from! WTF!

Honestly, looks better than most of the Star Trek games I'd gotten my hands on as a kid. Major points off for game length though. The character portraits give me strong "Animated Holiday Special Han Solo" vibes though, especially Spock.

Ironically, this final boss battle, the battle with the entity upon the Creation Planet from the film, is better-rendered and realized than in that film! The second-half of that encounter was admittedly weak because of the failures of Shatner's special effects team not delivering upon the original visions of the planet coming "alive" to chase and harass Kirk.

This is Sybok of *Valcan*. He was only classmates with Spock and through sheer coincidence shares his name with Spock's half-brother.

Over the years, some people with prototype carts have dumped them and put the roms on the web. They can all be played on a regular NES though (I use a PowerPak, but any decent flash cart should run most of them fine)

Star Trek fans use all of their brain power trying to keep track of the franchise and its inconsistencies. They are thus unable to be fans of anything else at the same time. Actually I just made that up - but it certainly feels like that sometimes.

Bill and Ted is the first one that springs to mind. Ghostbusters isn’t, Friday 13th isn’t really. Jaws isn’t and Jurassic Park isn’t either. That’s 5

@@noaht2005 I still count Jaws (and The Little Mermaid) as platformers. They are underwater so gravity is nonexistent, but they are as much as a game can be a platformer when underwater. Try again?

honestly i feel like this game was doomed from the start as yeah the movie was complete and total grabage already so yeah trying to make a game based on a movie that is just the worst trek has to offer good luck with that.

Watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It had the theme song that we associate with Next Gen. Gene Roddenberry was so impressed with Jerry Goldsmith's theme that he decided to make it the official theme song for Star Trek TNG.

+redeyedbandit1251 Ish. Originally McCarthy composed a different theme for TNG, but when it didn't "work" they decided to rather hastily adapt the Motion Picture Theme to TNG. Definitely way more iconic, imho.
