A playthrough of Ultra's 1992 license-based action-adventure game for the NES, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary.
Celebrating the 1966 debut of one of TV's most iconic sci-fi series, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary provides the opportunity to go galavanting about the galaxy as Captain James T. Kirk and company aboard the USS Enterprise. The NES game is not the same game as the PC and Game Boy titles of the same name, but it is a fantastic addition to the NES library, and it's one of the best video games to ever bear the Star Trek license.
Not that that's a terribly high bar to clear. If you've played Star Trek: The Next Generation on NES ( • Star Trek: The Next Ge... ) or TNG: Future's Past on SNES ( • Star Trek: The Next Ge... ), you know what I mean.
Star Trek 25th Anniversary's story takes place during the second season of the television show. The Enterprise has been ordered to collect data on some sort of gravitational disturbance near Sigma Iotia, but as they draw close the ship is caught in the phenomenon and finds itself flung to the other end of the galaxy in an instant. The Enterprise needs to make it back to address the threat before it expands, but the ship isn't going to make it far in its current condition.
The game is setup like an episode of the show. You begin on the bridge of the Enterprise with Scotty informing you that the warp drive won't be usable until you find some dilithium. Luckily the ship's sensors have picked up on the presence of crystals on a nearby planet, so Kirk, Spock, and Bones all beam down to the surface to take a look.
Once they've beamed down, they'll need to explore the area, talking to the locals and fending off threats (phasers set to "stun," of course!) as they puzzle out what needs to be done to proceed. During the away missions, the gameplay revolves around collecting items and using them where appropriate, and if you need a specialist to assist you, you can go back to the Enterprise at anytime to swap out members of your away team.
After you've finished on the planet you chat with the bridge crew to figure out your next steps, set your course, and engage. There are a total of four away missions that each pose their own unique challenges, and they all stay true to the spirit of the show. The personalities of the characters and the dialog is spot on - I especially liked how well they nailed Dr. McCoy's stodgy gruffness - and episode-specific characters appear in some welcome bits of fan service. You get to break Harry Mudd out of jail and scheme with the gangster Oxmyx, which I thought was pretty neat. It's clear that the people who made this knew and loved the TV show.
The game plays quite well, overall. The puzzles can tricky but their solutions are reasonable, and the combat is light and doesn't distract much from the adventuring. It's a good challenge that'll require a bit of effort to solve, and it's fun.
Even if you're not a fan of the series, if you like adventure games, I think you'll enjoy Star Trek: 25th Anniversary quite a bit. If you are a fan, this is a must play!

I fully agree. This game is faithful to the spirit of Star Trek and the gameplay, atmosphere, sprites, background graphics, "cutscenes" and sound effects are all really polished.

James Rolfe hates the graphic adventure approach--it puts him to sleep. He didn't look fondly upon this game by proxy, but conceded that it held up better than most licensed games. He said the same of Raiders of the Lost Ark and even E.T., stating that these are games that do not conform with his expectations of skill-based twitching.

It really was one of the best ones. Sigma Iotia could have been done a little better, maybe, but overall they had really captured a lot of the classic Trek elements. Thing that always struck me the most was the score. For an NES game with the limited sound bits... I mean damn. This played like an episode. There was a couple things that irked me, though. The limitation of 3 party members in certain instances. It would have been one thing if you could have traded out a specialist mid mission, but effectively you had to beam up and beam back down if you wanted to trade out anyone in the party. I also would have liked to have heard the Vulcan theme when Spock mindmelds with the Captain during the second mission. Not a crucial thing, but definitely a missed call back.

@@edwardgaines6561 Back in the eighties and nineties, Nintendo enforced a five-game/year limit on companies wishing to publish an NES game. This came out of a few assumptions: A) Minimize the amount of competitive back-and-forth B) Reduce the influx of new content C) Ensure companies can ensure quality on their end to make the Seal of Quality mean something The American video game crash of 1983 occurred in part when so many choices of similar-looking games alienated buyers. Nintendo did these things to preclude the drawbacks of excessive competition on their platform, like how social media platforms want to curate users. Nintendo has always worried about their reputation, which explains both terrible cease-and-desist orders on ROM modders and also their top-shelf first-party releases. Large companies capable of delivering content on a frequent basis thought Nintendo's criterions were dumb. "This isn't about leasing a vehicle--it's about a game that might not sell, disrupting the salaries of our creative and marketing teams!" To minimize said pressure, companies like Konami instituted shell corporations that published the companies' in-house material, bypassing red tape. And Ultra Games was Konami's gig. Ultra was the same label behind the NES TMNT, which is somewhat infamous, and also the stellar port and reimagining of Gyruss, which I've played on the Atari 2600 as well. Several companies did this. LJN became a shell company (for video games at least) on behalf of Acclaim. Toy Headquarters (THQ) is an offshoot. I think Acclaim's founders were part of Activision like Accolade. Activision started out by releasing games to existent systems like the 2600. Once Nintendo nixed that 5-Game limit, the shell companies merged back to their parents. In fact, Nintendo also did away with the sort of censorship they had in said times (which now plagues Sony) and retains a new edge in the market. I guess it's a good business lesson: don't grip liquid assets and not expect some to slip through your fingers.

Great comment/story. It's amazing how moments involving video games you experience in your childhood really stay with you. I remember as a kid waking up during the middle of the night because I heard Tetris music. I walked out of my room, looked downstairs and saw my mom (who supposedly hated video games) intensely playing Tetris in the dark with the glow of the TV shining on her face. She still talks about being a "Tetris Master" today. Video games mean a lot to so many people and they are a big part of the story of our lives.

It almost brings me to tears. Looking back at this 8 bit game of the original Star Trek. You can see the technical limitations a mile away. Along with the restrictions in gameplay. But just being REMINDED of Star Trek, before it turned more, and more, and more, and MORE spiteful and pretentious to its own past iterations instead of RESPECTING it. And back when Captain Kirk was the hero we all known and love instead of being reduced to a Unperson by Big Brother.

Sincerely the graphics and intro are great, and I enjoy the lot of effort that went into making that two characters could always follow you. Some fine-tuning and this could've been a hit. A Trek Point and Click "TOS or TNG" would be a great idea and something I'd gladly pay good money for. You'd play through classic episodes or new ones. DS9 would be fun too but it would actually benefit from the style of a Telltale TWD more action oriented interface however; Given it's more action oriented stance to story telling.

Well, there was a PC version of this game that had a completely different story and was more of a classic point and click adventure. It even had a sequel, Judgement Rites. They were both excellent and are available on GOG. TNG hat A Final Unity, which was also a fantastic adventure game, but sadly wasn't picked up by any modern distributor as of yet, but if you manage to get an original copy of the game, you can run it with DOS Box on modern machines.

It's obviously inferior to the PC game, but it's still a good adventure game. I like the idea of being able to bring specialists from the crew on away missions, rather than just always having Kirk, Spock and McCoy. It's certainly a bit clunky in terms of control and of course there's some moon logic as the genre is known for, but if you're a fan of the genre and of Star Trek, it's pretty solid.

Listen, we all know PC is going to be better. Just in terms of hardware support... I mean you're talking about late in the NES's life cycle on the console market. It was seriously outdated. What they managed to do with this title was nothing short of miraculous. Bad sound effects aside, you had the original music going and a game that played like an actual TOS episode. Was 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites better? Yeah. PC had storage space, better graphics support, better sound... the ability to include actual voice acting, for chirssake. But this game? For its time, on this console? It played extremely well for what it was.
