Tarkin's down fall truly was his ego. He did a lot of foolish things. The smart thing would have been put Leia, and her parents down. In a Carassidan style show trail. Getting Leia to confess to all her illegal activity. Then forcing Bail and his wife do the same.

Got some additional facts for y'all: One thing not mentioned here is how disorganized the Rebel Alliance actually was back then, using Mon Mothma's conservative tactics to conduct raids and other operations, but not fully unified, as Saw Garrera's Partisan faction worked mostly alone and other Rebel generals conducted their own operations with no communication with one another. As such, when Jyn and her party attempted to rescue Galen, the mission was conducted under Mon Mothma's orders, but Cassian and Blue Squadron's orders to kill Galen came from General Draven which contradicted the original purpose of the mission. Furthermore, when Jyn presented the Death Star information with the Rebel council on Dantooine, many were scared witless, some calling for peace or the disbandment of the Rebel Alliance entirely, angering Jyn and motivating the Rogue One team to leave for Scarif. When Admiral Raddus and General Antoch Merich heard of Scarif being attacked, they defied the council too, much to the encouragement of their soldiers who had grown tired of the indecisiveness of the Rebel council and were all too happy to get into the action. Raddus and Merich would die in the battle, with the plans for the Death Star that were transmitted to Raddus' ship, the Profundity, moved to the cruiser Tantive IV, the ship of Leia Organa which was docked in the hull and managed to escape after the battle was over. Luke Skywalker's Rogue Squadron is named after Rogue One. BTW, this movie takes place in between the events of Star Wars: Rebels and the first film.
