In 1977 I was 7 and my sister was 5. My parents hired a babysitter and took off on an adventure on their own with no particular plans. They ended up driving around San Francisco randomly just looking for something interesting. They found a movie theater with a long line where people were coming out of the theater and getting back in line. They had never heard of the movie on the marquee but figured the long liner, with people come out and getting back in line was a good sign. So they parked the bike and got in line. After the movie they didn't get back in line, but they rode home, paid the baby sitter and took us kids to the local theater to see it. And oh my God was it amazing.

I was also 7 in 1977. If my memory is correct, I saw it twice in the theater and once at the drive-in. I was probably too young to appreciate just how revolutionary the special effects were compared to other movies, but I do remember what an extraordinary cultural moment it was for everyone. I wonder if people felt similarly in 1927 when they saw the first talkie, "The Jazz Singer." Once we got cable TV and a VCR in the early '80s, I used to count how many times I had seen it; I lost track after 25 or 30!

I wish I knew what it was like sitting in a cinema in 1977 when that Star Destroyer first flew across the screen. I saw the original trilogy in the cinema when the Special Editions were released while I was in high school, but it's just not the same, especially since I'd already watched them countless times at home before then.

@@ArcaneAzmadi I was like, Wow, that's a big ship. WTH(eck) is going on? Then the big ship flew over and things just kept getting better from then on. It is just mind blowing to me that this was 45 years ago. The one thing that sucked was how much time passed between each movie. A year is a really long time when you are 7, and it was 3 years between this and Empire, then *ANOTHER* 3 years before Jedi. Hell, by that time I was already a teenager.

This is the updated version that has some CGI in it. Like Jaba in the hanger was not in the original release. Most of the effects were well know in the industry but what they did invent was computer control of the cameras to exactly repeat moves. In the space scenes each of the different ships was shot separately and then matted together. That would never work if a person was trying to repeat each move for each space ship.

That's the power of good practical effects. If you do practical(as in real, not CGI) right it will look good forever. My opinion the height of special effects in movies is the late 80s early 90s. Stuff like 'Predator' and 'Aliens' is just on another level. Even compared to what we have today. The sad part is Hollywood actually knows they look better, but CGI is cheaper.

I wasn't fully paying attention, but I'm guessing that this is a recent version, which would be a bit different from what people would have seen in 1977... No CG creatures at all in the original... Fortunately they made the Han not shooting first part look much better in the updated version compared to the first time they edited that... Although changing it from the original seems a bit pointless to me anyway... Oh well... At least it's nowhere near as bad as the mess they make of Return Of the Jedi... That might be a slight exaggeration, but god am I glad I got that collectors edition with the older version as a bonus... Ah well, it is still mostly intact, but god the amount of people that watch the new versions and don't realise it was updated, being like "Oh wow! They even had CG like this back in the 70s?" >_>;; It maybe gets too much hate, but damn do I wish the original cuts were also officially available.
@Calamity_Jack
@Calamity_Jack Жыл бұрын
@@KitsyX Yeah, this was the special edition ANH. I get your point, but Lucas himself said the special editions were designed to "finish the film the way it was meant to be." That is, in his original vision. He wished at the time he had more advanced cinematic technologies and budget to do the trilogy justice. And so when he had the chance, he made some cosmetic changes to make the original trilogy look and fit in better with the others and clarify things that he wanted (e.g. Greedo shooting first). You can certainly disagree with him, and some do because it messes with their childhood memories of the original films, but it is his movie after all and his story. That being said, I sometimes personally find his vision (and dialogue) lacking. But that's okay, I like the overall results and I can live with relatively minor changes.

Woohoo! You guys started on your Star Wars journey! Many of your questions about the force and Obi-Wan Kenobi and all of that will get answered in the sequel: The Empire Strikes Back, which many fans consider even better than the original Star Wars. Part of the reason it took off like it did is that it's a modern fairy tale - you have a princess, Han is like a pirate, Obi Wan is like a wizard, Luke is like a farm boy, Darth Vader is the evil sorcerer, etc. Harrison Ford was in TWO big movie franchises AT THE SAME TIME: Star Wars and Indiana Jones, and the combination of the two made him a super star. I was born this same year and my whole childhood up until around 7 was Star Wars, that's what all the kids in my neighborhood did, it was in all the stores, and happy meals and everywhere. It's hard to explain just HOW BIG Star Wars was and how much it impacted culture, both directly and indirectly. Prior to Star Wars, there was very little interest in Science Fiction. Star Trek had been on TV in the 1960s, but besides that, most science fiction or fantasy movies were either too niche, too cheesy, or considered just for kids. If you look at the biggest movie just two years earlier, Jaws, and other movies at the time, most took place in the real world in the present day and were more realistically themed. George Lucas had a hell of a time selling Star Wars to movie studios, everyone thought he was nuts, but finally 20th Century Fox gave him a break, partly because he took a lower salary in exchange for the merchandising rights. Making merch from a movie wasn't really a thing back then, and the studio happily agreed. Star Wars was the first HUGE movie that had toys and T-Shirts and hats and lunchboxes and pajamas and backpacks and bedsheets and coloring books and every other damn thing. George Lucas made enough money from the toys and merch that he was able to pay for the rest of the Star Wars movies out of his own pocket. So, you can thank modern merchandising on Star Wars. Star Wars made over $770 million which adjusted for inflation was close to $4 billion. It completely shocked Hollywood, and quickly other studios started becoming interested in science fiction. The guy who wrote Alien had been trying for a few years to get a studio interested in it, and they all said no, until Star Wars that is, and then they called him back and said they'd do Alien, so Alien happened b/c of Star Wars. Star Trek had been popular on TV in the 1960s but it had lost a lot of its' audience by the 1970s, but Paramount wanted to compete with Star Wars so they brought back the cast to make a series of Star Trek movies, which made Star Trek popular again, which led to multiple spin offs, which again, wouldn't have happened without Star Wars. Even modern superhero movies likely would not have happened without Star Wars being the trailblazer that it was. The first "modern" superhero movie was Superman in 1978, 18 months after Star Wars. But besides the storytelling and the merchandising, George Lucas had to invent a bunch of special effects and started a special effect company, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) to invent the types of computers and cameras needed to do the shots in the movie. ILM went on to do the special effects for: Back to the Future, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, Men in Black, Titanic, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Avengers, and hundreds more. ILM also created the first version of Photoshop before it ended up at Adobe. It's really hard to wrap your head around just how many things Star Wars has contributed to. Cheers

Great analysis, but I have to argue the point about Star Trek. It ran on TV from 1966-1969 with mediocre ratings. It got really popular after it was canceled and went into syndicated reruns. Star Trek conventions started out small in 1973, and had become major events by the time Star Wars came out in '77.

Part of the reason that 20th Century Fox was willing to part with the merchandising rights was that the studio had a horrible experience with the Dr. Doolittle movie in 1967. They had spent millions on a huge merchandising campaign that flopped. The prevailing wisdom after that and before Star Wars was that merchandising rights weren't worth much. Obviously, Star Wars changed that equation forever.

I was 9 in 1977. My Dad(who NEVER waited in line for anything) waited with my Brother (6) for about 90 minutes to watch Star Wars at our local theater in a small Georgia town East of Atlanta, a really old-fashioned place called the "Strand" It even had a balcony. At that point, I was hooked as a Star Wars fan for the rest of my life. I saw TESB in 1980 in Freemont, Nebraska, while we were out there visiting family. Saw ROTJ in 1983 in a multi-plex in Atlanta. It was fantastic, but nothing compared to that first experience in a small town. I love how you guys are experiencing this for the first time and sharing it with the world.

He 100% got it right. Obi-Wan told Vader that if he struck him down he'd become more powerful than even Vader could imagine and the second he died, he became one with the Force. Until that moment Luke couldn't even shoot a Stormtrooper, but after Obi-Wan died, he could shoot accurately. The Empire Strikes Back is the movie where the story really picks up steam and I can't wait for your reaction to it.

I always forget there are people out there who have never seen this movie. It's great seeing you guys' reaction to seeing it for the first time, but you'll never fully understand what it was like seeing this in the theaters back in 1977. Sci-fi special effects movies come out every other week now, but this was a groundbreaking movie in it's day. It was one of the first big blockbusters and the effects were state of the art. That opening scene of the Imperial Star destroyer overtaking the rebel ship was like nothing anybody had seen before. George Lucas founded Industrial Light and Magic (now a well known company) to develop many of the techniques used in this movie that are now standard practice in all movies. Harrison Ford had been in a few movies before this, but this was his breakout roll. Sir Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan) had already had a long successful acting career in the 40s through the 70s when he was cast in this movie, and continued to act until shortly before his death in 2000. Congratulations, you're no longer Star Wars virgins. You have only eight more to go now.

Introduced princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hans, Solo, and Chewbacca, as well as Darth Vader, so you knew, going in the names of the characters. But nothing to prepare you for that. but nothing could prepare you for the giant space adventure that blew off the screen and rock you back in your chair. there had never been anything like Star Wars before, and it stands alone as great fun and entertainment. If only he'd kept it looking realistic and didn't add some of that weird, cartoony CG stuff later... It wouldn't be an issue if they kept the old versions available... Can't take it out of the prequels though lol. I still enjoy them overall, but especially Episode 2 has some terribly designed CG monsters... Some stuff in Episode 1 was bad, but it somehow fit in better there... Oh well... Not the end of the world, but given that you were talking about realism in these films >_>; Although the least realism is not even the CG, it's the romance in Episode 2 lol.

When this came out there wasn't nearly as many movie theaters as there are today. We had to drive 30 miles, to the nearest "big" town, because the town I grew up in didn't have an indoor theater. Everyone and their brothers rushed to see this. I remember, at the age of 9 or 10, standing in line for 6 hours to see this on the 2nd day ( we went in the afternoon on the first day but knew there was no way we were getting in ). I absolutely love the first 3, like the next 3, and have only watched the last 3 once each.
