Also, great job by Richard LeParmentier (Admiral Motti) selling it. The 'throat spasm' was 100% the actor, not special effects. The scene would have been effective enough without it, but really just adds a nice extra touch.

The thing about Stormtroopers missing: remember that Tarkin WANTED them to escape (they put a homing beacon on the Falcon), but he wanted them to believe they escaped, and weren't just let go (as Leia suspected). In later films, it became part of the Main Characters' Plot Armor that all Stormtroopers cannot shoot well. So, an intentional deception ultimately became canon incompetence.

“Why did he add CGI to the old movies?” So, if you ask George Lucas, or most Star Wars fans, it’s because he always _wanted_ to include this stuff, but the technology just wasn’t there back in the day. But the truth is much more petty. His ex-wife was the editor on all three of the original films (they divorced shortly after _Return of the Jedi_ came out). By recutting all three movies with a lot of new stuff (and doing it himself), and then burying the original versions, he was able to cut her off from all future royalties.
@athens_1psvr31
@athens_1psvr31 11 ай бұрын
All of that could be true as part of the reasons he did it. Another is that it was a test of using CGI to see if he could make the prequels. By releasing them in the theater and DVD he made money to help fund the expensive prequels. Cutting the Ex out is a bonus plus extra money.

Didn't want to see Santa, I had Star Wars.

I think it’s because at the time, we didn’t have the amazing CGI, the comic films, the groundbreaking games and forms of entertainment we’ve become accustomed to. Back then, this film felt unlike anything else before it. There had been space films and series, but this had a different look and feel. Throw in the epic music, the western film vibe mixed with eastern philosophy combined with science fiction, and my young mind was hooked immediately.

Episode IV hadn’t been added until George Lucas was able to get more movies made. It was re-released with that new title ahead of Episode V. His story background had been changing in the earlier drafts. That’s why I am inclined to believe Anakin being Luke’s father and being Darth Vader was not in George’s mind at this point. Luke was the son of a famous, skillful Jedi who was killed by Darth Vader.

Not sure with George not having planned for Dark Vader to be Luke's father, because of the conversation between Darth and Obi-Wan when their fighting. Based on the conversation Obi-Wan seems to only have one pupil which is Darth, and Darth nor Obi-Wan bring up killing Luke's father, which would make sense because Darth never really killed Luke's father because he is him.

@@DockingFreidmanRecords Sadly, never used his hypnosis skills on me, but my much older sisters toured with him one summer and apparently were a little too easily hypnotized. In fact the oldest sister would be 'under the influence' from just sitting in the audience! I was too young to go but those are some of my favorite stories about my dad's previous work profession as a showman hypnotist. He was quite the character! I believe hypnosis is a great therapy tool! Now I know I just wrote that he never hypnotized me but he did teach me at a very young age the concept of mind over matter like making my ears move, then one at a time etc. For example he taught me how to not be ticklish. He encouraged me to see being ticklish as a light switch. When someone tickles me I invision myself turning the switch off and now my body doesn't react or feel the sensation, but when I turn the switch on, in my head, then I'm ticklish again. So maybe that counts?🤔☺ Thanks for the question, my apologies if it's a long winded answer.

The T-16 and X-Wing are both built by the same company, and ti save money, they use as many of the same parts as possible. The control layout of Luke's Skyhopper is essentially identical to the X-Wing, which is why Luke knows how to fly one seemingly out of nowhere. A parsec is a unit of distance, like 3.26 light years, and Han Solo flying it in less than 12 means that he took the shortest route where other people had to go around and therefore take longer.

Obi-Wan didn't tell Luke because he wasn't ready. Luke idolized the idea he had of his father. And being told that his father was *actually* one of the galaxy's greatest monsters could not have led to anything positive at this point in the boy's life.

Also tell me who gave you the power to decide who is a fan and who isn't?! You do know the difference between literal and figurative... right?! Literal: physically destroying the OT trilogy so nobody can actually watch them again. Figurative: The ST destroying the lore, canon, world building, character, and character arcs of the OT. See the difference? You say "absurdly negative" I say objective. Also being a "Star Wars fan" does not mean I blindly and gullibly accept anything with a Star Wars label on it. Just because it says Star Wars does not mean IT IS Star Wars. The fact that you think the ST doesn't destroy everything built in the OT tells me you are not actually a Star Wars fan, but rather a gullible NPC stuck in the loop of consume product, wait to consume more product. If you are an ACTUAL Star Wars fan you will reevaluate your overly naive and gullible point of view. The OT Star Wars is glorious art. Disney Star Wars is a very bad and cheap knockoff. "The Force will be with you, always." Fun Fact: The first movie to make over $300 million domestic box office. It was also the first movie to cross $500 million worldwide in its initial release. Action Star Fact: Stunt doubles were not used for the scene where Luke and Leia swing to safety in the Death Star. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher performed the stunt, shooting it in just one take. CGI Over Practical Fact: All the CGI was added in the late 90s and NOT part of the original release. I don't mind the changes, except for originally Han Solo (Harrison Ford) shot Greedo (Paul Blake) before the bounty hunter could do anything. Gun Enthusiast Fact: The weapons the stormtroopers used were essentially the Sterling L2A3 9mm SMG (sub-machine gun), a military weapon developed in the late 1940s in the U.K. and adopted by the British and Canadian Armies in the 1950s. The curved left entry side mounted magazine was removed, and that was as much as it was modified for the movie. The longer sandtrooper weapon was the MG-34 machine gun from Germany. Location Location Fact: The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia. There is a town in Tunisia's rural south named Tataouine (Berber for "eyes") and George Lucas liked the name so much, he adopted it for Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) home world. Some of the interiors and the courtyard of Luke's house were filmed in a hotel in Matmata, Tunisia. One can visit this two-star hotel and see some pictures and the painted ceiling of what was used for the Lars' dining room. When Luke goes out of the farm, he appears in a flat deserted area, while the reality, when you get out of the hotel, there are a lot of other houses, small stone hills, and a lot of prickly pear cacti (a variety very common in Tunisia). The skeleton that C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) passes belongs to a Tatooine creature called a Greater Krayt Dragon. This artificial skeleton was left in the Tunisian desert after filming and still lies there. During filming of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones (2002), the site was visited by the crew once more and the skeleton was still there.

When I think of Leia’s line: “You flew here in that thing? You’re braver than I thought.” I can absolutely see Jodie Foster, Angelica Huston, or Geena Davis delivering it. Foster isn’t as good as Carrie Fisher was for “love interest” material IMO, Angelica Huston would have been AWESOME, but I guess 1977 sadly wasn’t ready for that yet, and Geena Davis is just too tall to play against Hamill as a pseudo-love interest. Oddly, I think the movie would be almost identical if William Katt had gotten the part of Luke. Might be the first time I’ve ever thought a major character was so replaceable. He would have also muddied the waters more as far as the Ill-conceived “love triangle” played out. It was probably a good decision to cast a Luke who was less competition for Han.

To answer Jay’s question on why the films were changed George Lucas considered the theatrical films “unfinished” and years later went back to update them to match his “vision”. However he continuously went back to update them several times over the years partly so they’d fit in better with the prequels and later for a 3D rerelease that never happened. Because he considers the theatricals “unfinished” they are no longer available.

Alec Guinness (Obi Wan Kenobi) was another great British actor who starred in a lot of brilliant films like Bridge on the River Kwai, The Ladykillers, and many more. David Prowse who plays Darth Vader was another British actor. It was always 'Episode IV', but it wasn't always 'A New Hope'... that got added when it first got released to home media. The point of jumping in on Episode IV is that it was supposed to be like the old movie serials George Lucas watched when he was a kid (specifically Flash Gordon). Little shorts that would be shown before a feature... you would often see one without ever having seen the ones before, so you'd often be seeing 'Episode 3' without ever having seen 1 or 2, so it was meant to feel like you were jumping into this bigger story already in progress like someone stumbling into one of the serials. So Luke didn't know anything about his family at this point because George Lucas didn't know anything about his family at this point. Vader wasn't originally supposed to be his father, and Leia wasn't supposed to be his sister... these are changes that came later. Despite what a lot of people think, these movies were not all planned out in advance. George had done a lot of world building, but the actual plot of the movies was constantly in flux. Don't believe anyone that tells you otherwise (including George Lucas...). Princess Leia is 'out there' because she's also a senator and has 'diplomatic' reasons to be travelling. ...Also because she's an agent in the rebellion... Also, there are 'Despecialized' editions of the movies based on old film prints that got dug up or other old media. They basically restore things to the way they were when they were originally released (without all the CGI and new scenes), and then digitally cleaned up to make them look a bit newer. Closest thing to the original experience that you can get. Highly recommend watching those instead if you can... you may have to look in some unofficial places for them, though... For fun, if you want to see an even earlier version of the story, look for The Star Wars (yes, 'The' Star Wars) comic series from Dark Horse. It was based on some of the earlier plot outlines and character concept art done before the movie got made.

No, it wasn't always Episode IV. There was no Episode IV in the crawl for the original release. That was also added with the subtitle "A New Hope" after the decision to make more films was made and it was added for the theatrical re-release. It starts at Episode IV because George wrote a treatment and the "Star Wars" movie came from the beginning of the second act of that treatment. This was originally an Anakin story, not a Luke story. The rest is fairly accurate though.

The name Anakin (Annakin) did appear in some of the early drafts, but the story was nothing like what it would become, and the character was effectively what Luke would become (the name Luke Skywalker was also used, but again, just a different name on the Obi-Wan analog). The drop in in the middle of the story was very much inspired by Flash Gordon and old movie serials. George Lucas has a way of re-editing his own history, just like he does with his movies. You can watch/read old 70s-90s interviews with George about what he 'always had planned' for Star Wars and compare them to late 90s-current interviews and they are usually very different things. This is why I say you can't even trust George.

@@ArmouredPhalanx No, you are wrong on the why also. That is why I said a treatment and not a script. George laid out a TREATMENT of the story, which is only a more detailed outline, but when it came time to make the movie he realized he had to narrow his focus. In order to make a singular movie he focused on the part that became "Star Wars" and fleshed that out. The part that was focused on was the beginning of the second act of the TREATMENT, and the reason it became Episode IV in the overall. It was originally an Anakin story in the TREATMENT, but became an Luke story for the movie script. Whether is was Anakin, Anakin Skywalker, Annikin, or Annikin Starkiller is irrelevant. Luke Skywalker was originally Luke Starkiller since Anakin was originally Annikin Starkiller, and the original title of the treatment and synopsis was "The Star Wars". His very first treatment was "Journal of the Whills" but was only 1 1/2 pages long. The more detailed treatment "The Star Wars" was 13 pages long written in 1973. This morphed into "Adventures of the Starkiller. Episode I: The Star Wars" (1975). Which in turn morphed into "The Adventures of Luke Starkiller as taken from the Journal of the Whills. Saga I: The Star Wars" (1976). It was during the writing of "Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back" that the episodes came about. There was a fleshed out background made for the story which became the PT and hence why "The Empire Strikes Back" became Episode V and "Star Wars" became Episode IV and "A New Hope". It was also during the second draft writing of "Star Wars" Episode V The Empire Strikes Back" that Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader merged into the same person. The film "Star Wars" might have dropped into the middle of a story similar to Flash Gordon, inspired by Flash Gordon, or even as an homage to Flash Gordon. That is film technique and styling. However, again, the origin of the movie and the numbering system wasn't. To reiterate, realizing his back story could be made into a trilogy he then numbered "The Empire Strikes Back" V, that is why "Star Wars" became IV, and the PT I, II, II.

Hey buddy, most people are confused over that same line, "It's the ship that made the Kessle run in under 12 parsecs". They don't explain it in the movie, but a parsec is a measure of distance, not time, and without context, the line confuses people because it seems to imply that he's saying it made the "Kessle Run" in a shorter amount of time because the Millennium Falcon was a faster ship than the others in the race. However, in the lore, it's explained that the ship WAS fast, but Hans had also found a shortcut ... a shorter path to the finish line that cut down the amount of time it took to complete the "run" by quite a bit. However, it still DID take a fast ship and a very skilled pilot to pull it off, so he was not only bragging on the speed of the ship, but boasting about his own brains and flying abilities. Now, specifically, "What's a parsec" ??? One parsec is approximately equal to 3.26 light-years: Proxima Centauri, the nearest known star to earth other than the sun, is about 1.3 parsecs (4.24 ly) away.

George Lucas was inspired by filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and Samurai movies. Check out Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1954) and Masaki Kobayashi's "Harakiri" (1962).

I saw this at a drive-in theater in June 1977 when I was 4 years old. Imagine seeing that huge star destroyer entering the top of a 100 foot wide screen with the starry night sky as the backdrop.

John Williams’ score was absolutely iconic, the greatest movie soundtrack ever in my opinion. This is an amazing film franchise (which has some flaws) but everything does in life! Star Wars.. the absolute greatest. Love it! I could see you as Vader doing the imperial march with the dogs.. (anyone interested in that?!) haha Take care man, thank you for entertaining me with the movie reactions! :)
