I was 16, in the theater. No spoilers back then. No internet. It was a surprise and I’ll never forget it. Even Yoda being a Jedi master was a surprise.

"No, I am your father" Dude, I saw this movie a thousand times but that phrase gives me chills every time I hear it.

There are 3 reasons this is a huge twist: 1. Luke realizing his father isn't dead 2. Luke realizing the man he's hated and claimed was evil is actually the one he thought he looked up to. 3. Luke realizing his father is nothing like what he has been told.

The way Vader lowers his arm after Luke jumps, you can tell hes going “Bruh” under the mask-

"He told me you killed him." Obi Wan ain't lying.

The saddest thing about this twist is that because it's so ingrained in pop culture that we'll probably never see another geniune reaction to it.

I can’t believe Mark Hamill actually got his hand cut off for this scene. Such dedication.

The absolute palpable agony in Hamill’s voice when he reacts to the news is some really incredible acting.

Imagine being in Luke's shoes for a moment: Luke didn't know who his parents were or what happened to them. Then Obi Wan told him that his father was a Jedi before being 'killed' by Darth Vader, who was responsible for countless atrocities across the galaxy. Then when Luke actually confronts Vader in actual combat and lost the fight, he's mentally heartbroken that his own dad is the very person that conmitted atrocities and served the Empire(who also committed lots of atrocities). Needless to say, Luke has every reason to be shocked right now.

It is so weird to think that there was a point in time when this wasn't common knowledge.

I showed the star wars movies to my 8 year old son. But I started in order of release. So when we got to this scene, i told him to pay attention. As soon as Vader told Luke that he was his father, the “wait, WHAT!?” From my son was priceless.

Imagine what Vader was thinking when his own son decided he would rather fall to his death than join him. That moment was the beginning of Anakin's redemption.

When luke looks down, I’m not sure if he knows that he’ll live. Which makes his decision even more powerful. He’s risk his life to not join the dark side.

I love how Luke's suicide attempt is basically saying. "Fuck you dad!"

The fact that they actually kept it a secret until the film came out is incredible!

The dialogue, the scenarios, the plot twist, luke's sacrifice. The best duel in star wars saga, imo.

I realized why this is so impactful to me, there’s no dramatic build up, he just lays it on luke that he’s his father, and there’s no time to process what he said. To me that’s the best way to drop a plot twist.

I remember my mom telling me when she saw this in theaters when it first came out and the whole screening room gasped. That would have been something to see.

I saw this film in the Fourth Grade. My Science teacher decided to show the original trilogy to explain gravity and pressure. When my class and I saw this scene, our mouths gaped open.

"With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy" I love when characters who are portrayed as villains say things that actually make sense

Such a touching father-son moment. Vader slices off his son’s hand then lays down the whole “oh btw I’m your father, wanna join me?!”

Probably the most iconic scene in movie history. The films were mind blowing as it was, then this scene with Vader in full flex of his powers, the vastness of the setting, then hitting us with the twist. Still blows me away today. Better special effects than today’s movies. Just awesome. Then……Disney.

I remember in a college psych class our professor showed us this clip as an example of the Mandela Effect and everyone laughed at Mark Hamill's "no." I had never seen Star Wars all the way through before. Now watching with context, it's perfect. Imagine the anguish you would feel when you realize the man trying to kill you is the father you thought was dead and had idolized your entire childhood. Such perfect delivery!

Getting into music recently and playing guitar made me realize the impact of music in this scene

I remember first watching this on DVD back in 2004 and it was the peak of the OT.

This is actually some very underrated acting by Mark Hamill. As a kid, I was honestly a bit scared by his facial expressions and screaming after Vader's revelation; but when you think about the turmoil of emotions he has to portray - disbelief, anger, terror, betrayal, and presumably physical pain too... It's quite a formidable performance!

Original Vader was suppose to say "No Obi Wan Killed your father" but they kept it in secret only the director, editor, Mark Hamill, and James Earl Jones knew about it, nobody else in the cast knew so even in the premier the cast itself was left shocked. Dang it must have been amazing to be alive back in 1980 when this movie came out and being in the theater when I came out to experience that plot twist first hand

That was some damn fine acting from Mark Hamill once Vader dropped "I am your father" line. Luke knew the moment Vader said it that it was true, but it's so horrible he doesn't want to believe it. Hamill's facial expressions really drive all of that home. Luke indeed *knows* it to be true.

I’m sorry but it’s kind of hilarious how when Luke falls down Vader’s outstretched hand just sort of follows him disappointedly and he looks so done even though his mask has no expression

All this time, i used to remember vader said “no, i am your father” in his usual dark, menacing and intimidating voice.. but i just recently rewatched this movie again, and i realized that the way he said “no, i am your fater”, it sounds very soft and gentle like he actually really is loves and cares for his son, and also sounded really sad and full of regret..

I grew up as a homeschooled kid living under a rock, so when i first watched the original trilogy, I had no idea of the story or what star wars was. So this twist really got me.

I was 10 years old when I saw this movie back in the 80s and this is real Star Wars movie that I grew up watching it. Because I’m talking to you prequels fans and and sequel trilogy fans.

Vader was no supervillain, not really. He was a man that had been tempted & liked the taste of apple, so to speak/write.

Many people think vader says: "Luke, i am your father." But he acutally says: "No, I am your father." The more ya know.

I still can't get over that sweet little Anakin turned into Darth Vader!

Both have robot hands on their right hand. Like father, like son.
