The shortness of the duel works so well in my opinion. There’s no need to rehash an epic flashy duel that’s already happened between them before. And Maul’s death scene solidified him as one of the best characters in Star Wars imo
@wikidmick237
@wikidmick237 2 жыл бұрын
There's a reason to the shortness. Obi Wan starts with his usual fighting stance/style, then changes to Qui Gon's stance. The one that killed him. Maul reacts the same way with the block the he used to knock Qui Gon before stabbing him. Obi Wan knew this and cut through his block. It was a moment that Obi Wan would never forget and has played in his own mind. This was his way to honour his master by correcting the mistake he made...

@Helbore

What's so tragic about this end for Maul is that he'd spent so many years desperately hunting Obi-Wan so he could have his revenge and when he finally finds him, Obi-Wan is now so far ahead of Maul that Maul never stood a chance. It so aptly displays the futility of revenge. Maul got a second chance at life and he wasted it all on something he could never achieve.
@thewerewolff7248
@thewerewolff7248 2 жыл бұрын
obi wan has also simply moved on from Maul. He has no malice towards him for his past actions. He has no anger or wishes for revenge. Everything Maul has done since episode 1 is essentially meaningless. His whole goal in life was to make Obi Wan suffer and here he finds an Obi Wan who is completely beyond all that and now only feels pity towards Maul. Imagine having a life consuming grudge and hatred for someone for 30 years only to find that person look at you as nothing more than a nuisance distracting him from his main priority. As Obi wan himself says Maul has nothing. His life is nothing because its defined by wanting to kill a man that no longer cares. That has risen above all that. Just tragic.

I would argue that Maul didn't choose his path. He was taken by Sidious as an infant, he never stood a chance. Mentally and physically tortured his whole life, never knowing if he would live to see the next day, embracing hatred being the only way he could survive. The Dark Side's tainting him for virtually every moment of his living life. Maul never had a choice. He was too far gone before he was even old enough to make the conscious decision that would lead him to that point. I actually feel like he was relieved when Obi-wan killed him. Hate consumed him, drove him, it was the only thing that gave him purpose. He couldn't shake it off, he couldn't escape it. His only purpose was to kill Obi-wan, and only Obi-wan could end his mad quest. Whether he did it consciously or subconsciously, Maul went to Obi-wan to die. His reaction when he realized he'd been mortally wounded almost seemed like a weight had been lifted from him. Outwardly it could be interpreted as shock at losing, but I got more than that from it. Especially since he allowed himself to be held by his sworn enemy who he'd hated more than anything. He was dying, he knew it, and he was free. He probably felt comfort just being held. He didn't have to hate Obi-wan anymore. No parting venomous words or curses, no last proclamation of hate, all he wanted in his last moments was a last bit of comfort to know that all wasn't lost. His acts were vile, his death was necessary, but he's a very sad story in the end. I hope he found peace in the Force.

Someone once commented that both Qui-Gon and Maul died in Obi-Wan's arms. Qui-Gon beleived the chosen to bring balance to the force, staying true to his Jedi beleifs. While Maul beleived the chosen one to avenge them, staying true to his sith origins. The light and the dark side interpertation of the prophecy. It's poetry. It ryhms. It's an "End of a Era" for Maul as his story (Chronologically and in Rebels) finally ends by being killed by his nemesis, Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi on Tatooine and dies in Ben's hand. Although Maul did terrible things and was just fixated on his thoughts of Revenge toward Obi-Wan and those he opposed (e.g. Dooku, Sidious) I also pity Maul when he asks Ben Kenobi if the young kid that Ben was protecting (Luke Skywalker) was "The Chosen One" and his final words _"He Will Avenge Us"_ really tugged my heartstrings and I applaud Sam Witwer and Stephen Stanton (who also does a phenomenal impression of Alec Guinness' Old Ben Kenobi) performances as Maul and Ben in this episode. Maul's quote _"He Will Avenge Us!"_ really brings up a new meaning because The Sith (particularly Darth Sidious) have robbed both Obi-Wan and Maul of their pasts and taken everything away from them. Maul was abducted as a child by Sidious after the Dark Lord manipulated Maul's mother, Talzin, and it was Sidious who oversaw the destruction of the Jedi Order, which Obi-Wan was, of course, apart of. This is something that they both have in common. The Chosen One is said to be the one that will destroy the Sith, so if the prophecy comes true (which it does, as we know from ROTJ), then they will be avenged. Maul may have also meant the other fallen victims of the Sith, like his brother Savage Opress. I also applaud the writer's and the people who made this Rebels episode because before this episode came out or started production there was question if Ben Kenobi will make an appearance in the show and how would they handle his character when Ezra meets him because they didn't want Ben to have him leave Tatooine cause he's on the planet to watch and observe Luke Skywalker and having him leave Tatooine would risk him being noticed by the Empire so it was smart to have Ezra and Chopper visit Ben on Tatooine for help with the latter deciding he made his choice to protect Luke and at the same time telling Ezra on Maul using the holocrons to manipulate Ezra's emotions.

Maul's entire existence, except a moment before his death, was abut revenge. Only in the moment just before dying does he realize there is something beyond the revenge he chased and he dies in the arms of the one being who knew Maul better than he knew his own self. In the end, Maul and Obi Wan were Brothers In Arms, forged by the betrayals from Sidious.

Obi-Wan just feels so episode 4 in this. While I do really like the earlier holocron Obi-Wan model (that looks surprisingly much like Alec Guinness even if it's more Ewan), this is just so clearly the step right before ANH. The subtle hint of ginger in his beard & eyebrows just help sell that slow Ewan-Alec transition. And the voice too, James Arnold Taylor can do a good old Obi-Wan, but this just sounds so exactly like him it doesn't feel like someone doing an impression of Alec. It sounds very... natural? I guess? I do feel like JAT sometimes struggles with that in TCW for the more stilted Lucas-y dialogue unlike Ewan did in the PT & old Obi-Wan is very much about making that sort of thing sound good. The gravitas & the rythm & the tone of voice has to come together right or it just feels off.

Over the decades Maul's combat style has remained as aggressive and acrobatic as when he were younger, but you're not going to get stronger that way not as you get slower and weaker with age. Whereas Obi Wan has learned how to fight intelligently in his older age, use mind-games and ultimately adopt a style where his age and physical ability is less important to the outcome of a fight. A brief moment of rage or inspiration might have been enough to defeat Maul in a head-to-head contest back when Obi Wan was young and headstrong, but certainly not as they both got older (we keep seeing Maul kick his ass through the clone wars). So this play by old Obi Wan was not just the perfect way to finish the fight but the perfect time too. Maul had stagnated, and Obi Wan had new tricks.

My favorite part of this scene is the conversation that Kenobi and Maul have before their duel, which is essentially a duel of ideologies. Over the course of the last eighteen years in exile, Kenobi has become incredibly wise and is in many ways a quintessential jedi. Maul may not be a sith in name anymore, but he certainly still holds to their ideology. Maul is still caught in an obsession with revenge, possession, and selfishness. Obi-wan has achieved a sort of enlightenment, moving beyond all of those things. All of that conveyed in their conversation: "Look what has become of you." "Look what I have risen above." "I have come to kill you, but perhaps it is worse to leave you here, festering in your squalor." "If you define yourself by you ability to take life, to dominate, to possess, you have nothing." "And what do you have?!" And you can tell to some degree that Obi-wan pities Maul. Even to his last breathe, he is obsessed with revenge, and Obi-wan sees a hurt child that never learned the lessons he did because the chance was taken away from him.

My all-time favourite episode of Rebels. I won't list the obvious Qui Gon resemblances, instead I will focus on what Obi-Wan truly is - a true knight of the Jedi Order. He and Maul had at times shared a similar fate, both having their loved ones and life stolen by the same person, Palpatine, yet Ben never faltered. He rose above the challenge. And I think in those final moments Maul finally understood the truth...Obi-wan was never his enemy, he was more of a alternate reflection, a mirror image if you will, of himself. So alike and yet so different. I am so happy they both found peace at the end of their long rivalry.

Shortest but by a HUGE margin my favourite lightsaber battle in all of Star Wars. So much subtle undertone. It's amazing when it's broken down and analysed.

This is one of my favorite episodes, I know some people have problems with the Maul vs Kenobi fight being too short but I think it's the perfect ending to this Rivalry, and they beautifully packed in so much into their standoff from both taking their stances to then have Kenobi take Quigon's stance and then Maul trying to kill him the same way he killed his master, but unlike Maul Kenobi has moved on and Learned from his past and didn't fall for it, to then have Maul in his final moments in the arms of the man he hated for so long Begging for Hope it's beautiful 🥲

Actually tbh I think the first 2 seasons are stronger. It definitely peaked in season 2, but season 3 drags a fair bit and has most of the weakest episodes in the entire series unfortunately. And I love the Season 4 finale but the first really 8 or 9 episodes aren’t amazing either

That fight with Maul was perfect, the perfect length, the perfect style, everything about it. It would make sense while Maul was filled with rage all those years with just trying to kill Kenobi. Kenobi on the other hand analyzed the fight against Qui Gon over and over again while both learning how to default Maul if he were to use the same tactic again, and mourning his master.

Best. Lightsaber duel. Ever. And I love the implication that Obi-Wan has become so fucking powerful in the intervening years. It makes the fight with Vader (even with the terrible coreography) even more weighty.

Oh my word… I just now realized something I’m sure everyone knew forever. Ezra’s last name is a pun! He’s the bridge between episode 3 and 4. Edit: to be fair, I wrote this comment a minute before the end of the video, so I know it sounds really stupid now.

It’s so crazy. When this episode first came out I remember fans being enrage at how short the battle between Obi and Maul were. Like they were all hyping up for this show down to be this grand spectacle like how Ahsoka’s and Anakin’s was. And when it are I remember there being so many post made (even an article if I recall correctly) about how disappointing the fight was. And even when Filoni explained why the fight was so short fans still chalked it up to bad story telling on Filoni’s part. Maul fans were especially bitter at how fast he went out, again expecting this grand and outstanding fight scene, thinking Maul would somehow win and raging when it was the exact opposite. But now? Now so many people praise this episode and literally even now make posts describing the fight scene with Obi and Maul to be of a masterpiece. Whereas years ago it was disregarded for being too short. It’s just insane to see the passage of time and opinions change. Also side note: in the original script for this episode actually had Kanan accompanied Ezra to Tattooine but because Freddie Prince Jr was having health problems at the time, they had to completely rewrite his parts and replace Kanan with Chopper instead. Something I find disappointed, it would have been cool to have Kanan meet Obi against, since the last time Kanan saw Obi Wan was when he was a youngling back before Order 66 where as young Caleb Dume gave Obi the idea to use the beacon call the Jedi home to Coruscant and instead use it to send out a message to all Jedi telling them to stay away. So that message Obi beamed out that so iconic? Is thanks to Kanan.

I remember how controversial Maul's final confrontation with Obi-wan was, yet I always loved it. Many people didn't like how quick their final duel was, but I think a "duel of the fates 2.0" simply doesn't fit the context of that scene and at what point both Maul and Obi-wan are here. "He will avenge us" was a perfect final line for Maul, it's completely in line with his character, and there's so much meaning you can extract from it, a beautiful conclusion to a great character.

Filoni didn't even bother having JAT test for this or even tell him about it. JAT was upset that they didn't even bother telling him what they were doing. The poor guy was almost in tears in an old video about it.

It's always fascinated me how Obi-Wan used his experience in the first duel with Maul in Episode I to achieve victory twice in later battles. In Episode III, he knew Anakin was going to use the same move Obi-Wan himself used to defeat Maul and then years later he tricked Maul into attempting the same attack that killed Qui-Gon. Both times he knew exactly what was coming and how to end the fight with deadly efficiency

Obi-Wan started with his trademark stance, then baited Maul into attacking him in his old way by adopting Qui-Gon's stance. So, instead of parrying and getting stabbed as his old master did, Kenobi quickly ended the fight once and for all.

Hands down. THE best episode of this entire series. Absolutely LOVE the entire Maul/Kenobi/Ahsoka/Ezra story arc in this show and Clone Wars. Biggest mistake ever is we didn’t see any of this in live action. That voice, the way Maul was portrayed and the details of his backstory we never saw in live action - Sam Witwer knocked it out of the park. LOVE iT. And the Kenobi/Maul death scene was just about as perfect as I would have ever asked for. Such respect. Feloni did a masterful job in these series with this story.30:00- dead on right about the music. It’s literally almost too good to hear.
