Yeah, I feel the ones that were the most surprised didn’t see the connection between the stances and forms. I was kinda surprised too, but it didn’t take long at all to see it. It’s like “give me a good fight”, but when you see it last like 3 seconds if that, you’re shocked only because you wanted a fight. Once reality kicks in, you actually start seeing the significance of the whole thing. Well done, imo.

I interpreted it in that Maul, in his final moments, seeks peace with the force. And when he says, “He will avenge us” , he’s *quite literally* speaking on behalf of the all the force users that have died in the current conflict and the return of the Sith/Sidious.

@@abean9789 Oh, I agree with that, too. By this point I do think he's wrestled his way through that past trauma. But I definitely think it's something that has haunted him for a long time prior to this point: Kenobi very much was the type to blame to take too much guilt and responsibility onto himself for things that were in truth outside of his own control - in part, I'd say, a mindset caused by certain... Failings, in Qui-Gon's approach to teaching him (Events like Melina-Daan and Bandomeer come to mind if we involve Legends continuity) I do agree he's overcome that baggage - for the most part at least - at this point, though. I disagree with the Idea that the duel is short. Yes, it is not as long as some other 15 minutes fights, but the duel is not 15 seconds short either. The duel starts when they start talking. Obi Wan wins the first exchange when Maul ignites his light saber. Maul wins the second when Obi Wan ignites his own. Then, they observe themselves, change stances, and Obi Wan wins the third exchange, and the duel by killing Maul. The duel is philosophical, mental and martial, and it is 3 minutes long...

Maul was evil. He chose, after he had a chance at a new life, to change who he was... He did not. He chose, willingly, to continue his sadism. That said - Yes. He was a created evil. As was Darth Vader. A created evil. Many like to point out the killing of the Younglings as his worst crime, but it was not. Younglings had been training for combat for 4-9 years by the time they're considered younglings. Yes - Children. Children that could, and sometimes did, kill non-force sensitives. Anakin, also, chose to be the one to kill them so that they would not suffer from blaster fire - the plasma burns of which tended to kill slowly - or for them to suffer an even worse fate... The children _were_ going to either be killed, or they'd have been raised, maimed, and tortured under Sith tutoring for the rest of their lives. Twisted into hollow husks of people, and shaped into hunters or assassins. This was Sidious' plan for any Younglings that Vader 'found alive.' Just like Maul - these children would have been brutalized, tortured, and utterly unloved. It was horrific, but in his deranged mind justified. Admittedly you have to read the novels to discover these thoughts that Anakin had at the moment, and the years afterward that he dreamed of that moment.

To comment on the significance of the mind games aspect of the fight: After witnessing the death of his master, Obi-Wan was traumatized and haunted by it. He devoted his training to the now his signature defensive style, primarily because it was a direct counter to Maul's fighting style. In the back of Kenobi's mind, he was always preparing for this fight. He went through it in his head countless times, visualizing exactly what he would do to avenge his master. And after years and years, when it was finally time to put all that preparation into practice, in that moment, he realized that he had been fueling his grievance, his grudge, his hatred for Maul in his own obsession with him. He realized that was wrong. This fight wasn't meant to be for vengeance. In those 10 seconds, Obi-Wan confronted and made peace with his past and he realized that Maul could never do it. He realized what Maul would do being blinded by hatred and bitterness. So he changd his form to his master's form. He knew Maul could not resist the temptation of poetic irony of killing a master and his apprentice with the exact same strike. But Obi-Wan studied this exact fight, this exact chain of strikes his entire life. He studied Maul's form and how to counter it and devoted his training to the form that is best suited against it. And then he chose not to use it. He changed it to his master's form which would put him at a disadvantage. Not for poetic justice, but because he knew Maul in his hubris and hatred would attempt to do the same thing as he did back then. Obi-Wan set him up. That's why the fight is 3 moves. Because Obi-Wan knew the exact 3 moves that would be used. He didn't need a form anymore. You don't need a form when you can see the future. You just directly counter what will happen. It's not even a fight at that point, it's just going through the motions, playing your part. This was no longer about the past, about Kenobi's grudge, Maul's hatred, or their fated clash. None of that mattered anymore. This was about protecting Luke. In those 10 seconds, Kenobi came to terms with the past and moved on and Maul didn't. Maul couldn't. He had become a slave to his past and that meant he had no future.

Even the moment just before Satine's murder in the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan told him that he realized the decision to join the Dark Side had never truly been Maul's in the first place. Anakin was weaker because he lost his limbs and got burned hard. Palpatine was getting, really, really old, and we still do not know if he was not still a beast with a lightsaber in Rotj. But he only needed lightning.

Obi-Wan has had years of improvement, mentally, spiritually, & gaining in wisdom, so that he truly is a master now. He was too young to mentor Anakin properly, but had promised Qui-Gon Jinn. Now he can keep that promise, by protecting & mentoring Luke. Even at this stage, Obi-Wan is willing to talk things out, but Maul is still the same as he ever was and in pushing too hard and threatening to find Luke, he condemns himself to death.

When I first saw this, I was expecting the fancy footwork lightsaber battles. This was much more elegant, and I think a good transition to what we see in Kenobi's next dual, with Vader in 1977' New Hope (unless the new Kenobi series or another series/movie adds something else).

This man is just the greatest jedi of all time man. Mentally broken, having lost his master and father figure, lost his brother, his apprentice, his home, his order, his friends, he watched as the empire took over and destroyed everything, was alone nearly half his life. Watched his own brother and apprentice fall to the dark side. Living with the guilt of what happened. Not to mention he lost his love, and still never lost his will and was wise. Unlike anakin, he still held the one who killed his master and love and comforted him at the end. Luke would not even happen to be a jedi if it wasn't for obi wan's sacrifice.

Maul had such a rough life. He never truly was able to truly make a path for himself. Since his birth he was meant to be a tool for someone else and even when he'd risen to be a mighty crime lord and leader of Mandalorians, he was still so heavily influenced by his time with Palpatine. I think in his last moments was when we saw the real Maul.

Obi-Wan Kenobi may have been known as *THE* master of Form III (Soresu), but we tend to forget that Obi-Wan's other specialty is mind games... getting inside the other person's head. Here, Obi-Wan *knows* that Maul isn't exactly all there. He *knows* that Maul is extremely tunnel-visioned towards him. So Obi-Wan begins in his signature Soresu opening stance, which Maul has faced many times. But then Obi-Wan switches to Form IV (Ataru, the form that Qui-Gon specialized in), which he has not used since their first duel. So Maul adjusts his form, intending to break the form's lack of defense, exactly as he did to kill Qui-Gon. But Obi-Wan *KNEW* Maul would do exactly that. So on the *second* block, notice that Obi-Wan blocks Maul in such a way that he can't be leveraged out of the lock as Qui-Gon was. Then Maul attempts the same move he did that killed Qui-Gon; striking Obi-Wan in the face with his saberstaff's hilt. But Obi-Wan, knowing it was coming, sliced right though the saber, fatally wounding Maul.

A lot of the reactors can commenters notice is the symbolism of the stance changes, but this was a fight between two masters of their craft. That was the fight, the three strikes was the end of it. When I was in wrestling and on the mat with a similarly skilled opponent, the first few seconds was similar. Running the match through our heads before we started to grapple. What happened next was playing it out. In those matches, it is over before it even starts. Obi wan and maul both were doing the same thing. It was awesome to see it play out.

I feel like people who didn’t like this fight didn’t get it. Like one it represents the samurai duels from classic samurai films (they even have Maul pause before realizing he’s been fatally wounded) but also represents how Obi-wan has moved on and is willing to change, but Maul is literally stuck in the past.

Really sitting here and reflecting on the dialogue choices "Look what I've risen above" and "and what do you have?" Obi-wan and Maul's rivalry at one point consumed them both. Maul's desire for revenge for his initial loss, and Obi-wan wanting to avenge his master. Obi-wan using Qui-gon's stance really shows how much it replayed in his head, and Obi-wan's defense combat. Then once it is done Obi-wan rises above it again to comfort Maul. I don't really even watch star wars content but this scene replays in my head a lot and it means more the more I think on it.

This is one of if not my favorite moments in all of Star Wars. After all that Maul has taken from Kenobi over the years, he still is ruled by his empathy towards him. Obi pays homage to his master in that final moment, and instead of giving Maul the satisfaction of a glorious duel, he ends his suffering quickly and holds him in his final moment, without hatred or judgement. Just beautiful

its such a somber moment, for a character that has been such a pravalent and intense character in clone wars and rebels. He meets his end on Tatooine, in the calm of night, against the person who cut him down initially, being struck down again so cleanly with no intense fanfare, just quick strikes and he meets his end. he finally goes in peace when he realizes that Obi-wan is protecting the true chosen one, who will avenge him. Its such a perfect end to such a bombastic character.

This scene would not be possible without the history behind these characters and the expertise to harness that in all the fields I mentioned. A tragic and phenomenal end to one of the last true antagonists of the Clone Wars era and as far as Obi-Wan is aware at this point, the last vestige of his past. He walks away from that dual as Ben Kenobi, his sole purpose to watch over Luke and keep him safe for as long as it takes.
