Rogue One ends with the reveal of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) as she appeared in the original Star Wars in 1977. How did Rogue One pull off this effect? And how did the movie feature Tarkin in several scenes after Peter Cushing died in 1994? Erik Voss explains the advanced visual effects techniques used by John Knoll of Industrial Light & Magic, combining stand-in actors, archive footage, and motion capture to re-create a character on screen. How intensive is this process exactly, and what ethical questions does it present?

The CGI characters may be one of those future "corrections"/"improvements" that will be highly welcomed some day when the technology evolves to the point it isn't so dramatically distracting. I'll give them an "E" for effort (better than an "F") but the rest of the film blew me away and pulled me in which is probably why these critical effects (Tarkin and Leia only) were so devestatingly disappointing.

It was an incredible delivery of fan service. But it doesn't even remotely touch The Force Awakens as a standalone Star Wars movie (and nor should it).

Rogue One was much better than TFA. It had less mistakes, a better (and ORIGINAL) story, and better action. TFA was an exact copy of A New Hope, except with better graphics and new characters.

The were scenes used in ANH. I recognised all of their takes from that film. The dialog was changed but not the shot.

I can verify that one scene with Red Leader, where he says "watch the fire from those towers" is exactly the scene where he states "Negative, it didn't go in. It just impacted on the surface." He is leaning to his right and grimacing exactly the same. It looked like a direct pull, not an outtake.

I say the CGI wasn't just good, but outstanding. Not just the face recreations but every landscape and craft as well. The detail in every freaking scene is huge!

really? his skin being too perfectly imperfect, the overdone reflection in his eyes and the too powerful idle movements? real people don't idle move so smoothly. rather when they move, it's more jerky movements. if i didn't notice these 3 things, i wouldn't have known he was cgi either

ThibautVDP Basically the only thing that threw me was his movements, him walking, it was as If he power walked everywere, like they sped him up ever so slightly to still seem kinda beleivable but enouh for humans to be able to distinguish the difference, we have been looking at humans for thousands of years after all so we can see slight inaccuracies.

Tarkin in Revenge of the Sith was 100% practical effects. They used an actor that resembled Cushing, and applied prosthetics to his face to get an even closer image. I swear, people don't give Lucas credit where it is due.

But if that were replicated in Rogue One, the illusion would have been completely lost as soon as Tarkin opened his mouth to speak. I don't think prosthetics would have worked properly here.

+RaphProgListener No. The big shots in the prequels are ALL CGI, like the army of troopers. In the OT, the sets were real. In the prequels, the CGI was too much, and its one of the main problems of those movies

CGI was fantastic, especially Tarkin. I could see it was CGI, but after the second scene of his, I forgot he'd been brought back from the dead to the big screen.

Saw Rogue one tonight, seeing Peter Cushing made such a special meaning to the film, but iltumatly at the end when Carrie Fisher's 'Princess Leia' came on screen no more than 5hours after I heard of her death today it was bone chilling. Like seriously bone chilling. Rest in peace. I do hope they dont carry this on however, just recast new people to fill the spots of deceased actors.

Happened to us too as we saw it just today. I was speechless at the end. The wife started crying. For some reason I didn't expect to see Princess Leia in this movie. As I noticed what ship it was in the end sequence I was like oh dear....here it comes.

I agree, why complain? When thanks to these recreations we can see just how far CGI technology has come. And it is eerie that they could basically recreate someone, and have very few errors in the final product. Personally I say well done!

Paul D What an oddity, the fact Tarkin was CGI was not very noticeable at least to me. It goes to show how far along CGI has come. Look at beowulf, now there's obvious CGI.

Yeah, I was distracted by the CGI only because it was soooo close to real. It's like the picture on the wall that is like a hair crooked. And at first, I thought Leia's eyes looked "odd". But then I looked at her in the original film. It's pretty close.

I watched the movie on Friday. I was so happy when I saw the young Leia at the ending... It was one of the best endings in movie history! When I watch the movie again, I will be very sad at the end...

Yeah, just normal format, it was really apparent immediately, I mean there are 38 billion skin cells on the body which means around 38x4 verts to hopefully make that look normal, my pc can handle around 8mil verts... i think a studio might handle 1 billion w/ a cluster. So, yeah..

I doubt they would make the topology so dense. I would assume for any finer details to make the light hit correctly it would be down to bumps/normals and very good textures.

Not all the pilots were from old footage because I know for a fact Drewe Henley, Red Leader, came back to reprise his role before he passed away earlier this year. They just used some minor CGI to make him look younger.

I think Charles Dance looks pretty dang close today to what Peter Cushing did back then, and with just a little Hollywood magic.... they could have made him look so close to the original that the audience not only wouldn't notice, but they wouldn't care. Charles Dance could have played the shit out of Tarkin and they would be able to use him in other installments that take place in between Episodes III and IV. They missed a golden opportunity here, pun intended.

I thought the same thing, just find actors that look like the two characters they CGI'd. The CGI was weird looking and distracting to me. My brother had no idea the Peter Cushing character was CGI. Not sure how anyone wouldn't know that Carrie Fisher was CGI, she looked kind of weird. They both looked like characters from The Polar Express to me.

Everyone I've spoken to seems to have differing opinions, some say that the Leia CGI was worse (my opinion too), some say it was better; some say they couldn't really see the difference between the CGI and the real thing.

Charles Dance isn't gaunt enough and his face not long enough. They have the same hairline and similar eyes. I like Charles Dance, but I much prefer CGI Tarkin. Cushing was fabulous and I love that they stayed true to him. The CGI didn't bother me in the slightest. A recast would've. I hate recasts. It always puts a dent into what the original actors have created before. And I'm saying that as a Cushing *and* Dance fan. I'd rather have them cast Dance in a new role, giving him the freedom to express a role that hasn't been defined yet.

What he said. All the stuff they did in this movie to make it work the way it did is amazing. I even liked the fact that they sadly killed Red 5 which later became Luke's call sign. It also explains why they had so few fighters in a New Hope to stop the death star.

He got the cadence perfectly, even if we all knew it wasn't Cushing, so what they were trying to get across got acoss, even if in the back of your mind it's just the slightest bit jarring. Minor nitpick for a really entertaining film, I'm gonna see it again before the week is out!

When I first heard about the Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher CGI stand ins I was really skeptical, but I have to admit they really pulled it off with them and they worked far better than I ever thought they would.

Fuoco 136 Opposite for me. Tarkin looked off, but not too much. Leia looked really CGI. Her expressions didn't move naturally. Tarkin had the same issue, but overall his face moved less so it wasn't quite as glaring to me.

I thought young Leia appeared much less realistic than Tarkin. Tarkin moved very realistically (but looked a little strange physically) that I first thought he was done with makeup on a somewhat-look-alike. Maybe it's because her face is younger and she smiles, so it was harder to render her appearance.

I agree. To me the "hope" line she delivered seemed out of character and inappropriate for the situation where the rebellion was getting their butts kicked and they were all likely about to die. I get that it was supposed to fit with earlier mentions of "hope" in the movie, but it just didn't work well. Tarkin was a little in the uncanny valley where he looked almost real but not quite which is creepy. Still a good movie.

Agreed. It was certainly a valiant effort, but Leia was definitely noticeable as CGI. Tarkin on the other hand was fantastic, even though his mouth movements were a little odd at times. Maybe a side-profile shot of Leia might have been better, rather than a frontal view? Just my initial impression.

Yeah, I thought Tarkin was the same actor, just made to look younger digitally. I had no idea that he died, and it was another actor with CG. Leia looked horrible, and I wish they just didn't show her face, because the CG looks more realistic in Star Wars Rebels.

This kind of vfx is really amazing to see, because most of those scenes were shot twice (body double and the actor), but when the actor is actually dead then the reconstruction is way more complex. The finishing process for both were visually different, but Leia's finishing was perhaps uncomplete. They may correct it on the Blu-ray version.

I found Tarkin so distracting that I found it hard to remember what he had said. I hope that they can touch it up for the post-theater release, because their lips don't look as if they are enunciating and their facial movements were jerky in an unusual way. Both fell into the uncanny valley for me.

I saw Rogue One the day after Carrie died and I welled up and almost cried when I saw Princess Leia in then final scene of the movie. It was such an appropriate and serendipitous tribute. And such an AMAZING film.

While we're on the subject, "Rogue" was the best chapter of the Star Wars universe since "Empire". I mean in the sense, that they're both direct prequels to their respective first installments in the franchises. Rogue One ends with the beginning of A New Hope, Halo: Reach ends with the beginning of Combat Evolved. Almost all of the heroes sacrifice themselves to ensure that the next events took place etc..

Thought the effects were great. Very impressive. I thought (at first) that Tarkin was simply being played by an actor similar-looking to Cushing; realised after a while that it was just convincing CGI. And the shot of Leia blew me away. The effects team did a sick job. Anyone complaining is just being a little bitch. Some things will never be enough for some people.

The problem is that we're not comparing it to other CGI. The film is not CG contra CG, it's real actors vs. obvious CGI. If it was a full CG movie, then it would be amazing. It is not.

The only problem I had with young Princess Leia was that she looked pretty smug at getting the plans. She was smiling/smirking which I felt was inappropriate after we'd seen all those characters we'd just connected with, die. I wonder what Carrie thought of the reproduction? I personally think they both still need more work. I am hoping they will continue to work on the CGI for the home release. Honestly the CGI for Downey Jr in Civil War looked much better than both Tarkin and Leia.

I'm gonna be honest Tarkin's face was crazy distracting, barely half his lines got through to me. I appreciate the work, but the tech is not god enough for it yet it seems. Works better with quick shots like with Hopkins in Westworld or even Leia at the end.

Or even practical effects... They could have done a much better job with a similar looking actor and good makeup. CG touchups could even be done to improve the real actor, but doing the whole thing with CG just doesn't work atm.

Dimitri Kvasha They did just that on Ep 3 he didn't look good. SO yes Tarkin in EP 3 was not CGI, he was practical prosthetic and make up.

John christopher , no they didn't, it was an actor playing a 20 year younger tarkin. he had special makeup on too

I don't even know why people are talking about Tarkin, I walked out of that theatre amazed and thrilled about the movie as a whole( especially that last scene with Vader).

I felt the movie was good, but I was neither amazed or thrilled. The Tarkin CGI shows improvement from previous generations, but still has room for improvement. The necromancy ethics are interesting. I don't know why people wouldn't talk about Tarkin as it's a CGI milestone.

It's great for objects and landscapes and special effects, but don't try to pull off people's faces. It never works.

The CGI Tarkin and Leia were 95% good, they outdid themselves and this is how a Star Wars movie should be handled, way better than TFA. Kinda tired of girl leads but this one was more believable and human than Rei, she felt like part of the team not the OP Mary Sue goddess mess that was Rei. All the characters had purpose on this movie! It felt so good to see Tarkin and young Leia again, and Vader stole the show at the end!

I really liked for some reason that there was no happy ending. People are complaining that all the characters died but it was unpredictable which i loved. I thought that it was going to be another cheesy love story between Jin and the captain but then Boom get death star'd. I mean it was a victory for the rebels since they got the plans but just barely with a huge loss of life

Charles Dance aka Tywin Lannister for Tarkin in a Darth Vader standalone blockbuster. Imagine Vader tracking down ship theives like in the recent Tarkin book.

They need to work on putting more "play" in the cheeks and lips, the facial movements are still too tight and precise.

I feel like the shaders they used on his face were too much. Too glossy. And there just wasn't enough skin detail and imperfections on his face.

CG Tarkin wasn't as good as he needed to be for closeup shots. It just wasn't quite lifelike enough. It was in the uncanny valley, not quite back to true human. This would have been less noticeable if they had just shot him from a little farther away. There really was no need for a closeup.

ZombieTex Yeah, have that reflection be one of the only face shots and whenever he walks we only glimpse his face as instead we see his chest and rankplate walk past the camera and only see him in the background. For example when speaking to Krennic he talks first looking to the death star, walks past the camera continuing and turns at the entrance to the corridor to finish then walk off to leave krennic staring in dismay at his lifes work...

If they had introduced CGI Tarkin a little more subtle (not clearly visible, backlit etc.) I would've digged it. But in most shots he was too close to the camera, perfectly lit, and sometimes even in the same shot with a real actor, and it just felt off. Enjoyed the movie though. Better than a certain Episode that was released recently...

And his face was twitching/blinking way too much. Tarkin, while displaying discontent, never really jiggled his mouth/cheeks/eyelids around that much. Leia I didn't even notice though, shit was magic.

I agree a bit with Tarkin, although I still think what they pulled off was impressive. I thought Leia looked like she was acorns walnuts in her cheek for winter, though.

Leia, Red Leader, and Gold Leader were perfect CGIs. I actually didn't even realize Red Leader and Gold Leader were until I watched this video; I just thought "oh hey, that's them from the original trilogy". Tarkin tho, looked pretty bad. I mean, it's probably the best CGI human so far, but it still looked really off and it did kind of ruin his scenes for me. His wide angle shots were barely noticeable, but in the close ups, it was very obvious. Especially his eyes and mouth, and the way he moved his head just looked very non human.

Red Leader and Gold Leader weren't CG. They were from unused footage from the original Star Wars that Gareth Edwards found at Skywalker Ranch.

Credit where credit is due, using a cgi human for as long and as close to the camera as they did with Tarkin takes confidence, astounding amounts of work and almost certainly more money than hiring any actor would. It may not be perfect, but it was pretty impressive in its own right.
