Changing puppet Yoda in Phantom Menace to CGI Yoda was a good change in my opinion. Puppet Yoda looked fine in the original trilogy, but in Phantom Menace he just looked weird.
@tomasdavies28014 жыл бұрын
@@FirstnameLastname-us7mx I think I've heard that it's something to do with the lighting, the original puppet Yoda was only ever featured on Dagobah which was generally shadowy and dark. In the phantom menace the environment was much more bright and showed the limitations of the puppetry far more clearly. As for the last jedi though, no idea xD

Possible unpopular opinion: To be perfectly honest, I actually really like Hayden Christensen as Anakin. True, there were definitely dialogue issues and the direction he was given was very questionable, but that is the fault of the writers and director, not Hayden himself. Hayden actually knew the character of Anakin spectacularly well as he and George Lucas actually sat down and had an extensive talk about it, and he did as well as he could with the material and direction he was given.

Urgh. I hate-hate-HATE the stupid musical number in Jabba's palace. The whole scene is just distracting because I know, even if Lucas has made it nearly impossible for me to get my hands on the movies I watched when I was a kid, that the chick being dragged into the rancor pit was far more interesting and useful for establishing Jabba's character. We don't need to know he's got a cool band. We need to know he's a gross slug who is perfectly happy and entertained by casually murdering anyone that displeases him.

What's interesting is that Lucas didn't think of dialogue as its own thing. He thought of dialogue as part of the soundtrack. In an interview with Alec Guinness during the time of the original trilogy, he states that Lucas' original script for the original Star Wars had extremely clunky and awkward dialogue, which he asked if some of it could be altered or changed. I guess he's never had a way with dialogue, but he believes that the emotion should be expressed by line delivery, the soundtrack, and body language, rather than the words themselves. Alec Guinness is also commonly referred to by fans as "hating Star Wars," but in this same interview I saw, he addressed this exact thing. He said that he wasn't a fan of sci-fi movies or books, but once he read Lucas' script, he couldn't stop reading it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think people misjudged him calling Star Wars "goofy."
@mjfan87043 жыл бұрын
I guess many people don't like to think of Star Wars as goofy. Unfortunately there are multiple goofy scenes and lines within the OT. Lines like: "Get in there ya big oaf! I don't care what you smell!", or scenes such as Chewbacca repairing C-3PO and putting his head on backwards and Threepio complaining loudly about it. Or, and this one really takes the cake for me: Luke Skywalker telling his Protocol droid to make the Ewoks release him and the other rebels or Threepio will, and I quote, "Unleash your terrible powers upon them."

Can't agree on the celebrations at the end of Return of the Jedi. They always seemed so out of place, especially considering the scope of the expanded universe at the time of the release of the Special Editions. It's not like the Empire just rolled over and died the moment the emperor was killed. The Rebels won a significant victory that day but the war wasn't over. The Force Awakens confirmed as much as the Battle of Jakku that basically did finally end the Empire wasn't until a year later. Depicting people celebrating on the Imperial capital world would have been like the citizens of Berlin taking to the streets to celebrate immediately after the D Day invasion.
@toahero59257 жыл бұрын
Well, the Force Awakens wasn't even being considered yet, so Lucas wasn't aware that Disney was gonna hit a giant reset button and undo all of Luke, Leia and Han's hard work in order to continue the series. In my opinion, that decision was worse than Greedo shooting first, the romance scenes of the prequels, AND jar jar binks.
@omegalock35497 жыл бұрын
Toa Hero that was one of the worst part about Force Awakens. The original trilogy basically meant nothing in the end. They were so focused on bringing back the good parts of the original trilogy that they failed to offer new things. Now we are BACK to an empire vs the rebels storyline for no good reason.
@knightofficer7 жыл бұрын
actually the rebels did succeed in freeing the galaxy from tyranny, with the remnants of the empire retreating far out beyond the reach of the new republic, then members of the rebel alliance became "the resistance" and went chasing after those remnants. The scene in which the first order fires their star killer cannon was them pretty much erasing all of the major planets of the new republic and sending the galaxy into disarray.
@toahero59257 жыл бұрын
knightofficer Which was stupid. The destruction of 5 planets wouldn't automatically put the first order back in total control like they claimed. Besides, that dividing laser beam was stupid. If they had really wanted to make it look cool, they would have had the beam hi the sun, and cause a supernova.
@knightofficer7 жыл бұрын
Toa Hero they beam wasn't a laser it was a fusion weapon, they basically killed the planets with a directed nova, shooting a sun with it would basically have been like pouring a glass of water into a glass of water

Let's be honest, the force ghost change makes sense, and was absolutely justified. The force ghost looking nothing like the actual Anakin makes no sense, and it's obvious that if Anakin himself were to choose a form to take, it would be the one he was in the last time he was truly "Anakin Skywalker" the hero of the clone wars, powerful Jedi, opponent to the sith, symbol of hope, and most importantly the way he looked the last time he saw the love of his life.

The additional ships in all the films was a huge plus and greatly needed. That was straight up a limitation of the time and budget back during the originally filming. I agree that the lightsaber edits were justified, but I never really felt like they looked right until the Force Awakens. It took me a few viewings where I felt the lightsabers finally looked perfect, but never could figure out why until I realized that it was because they actually acted as light sources now. In previous movies, they just looked like glowy sticks with a sort of aura around them and it made it feel like they weren't quite... There. However, in Force Awakens, the fact that lightsabers illuminated the actors and the world around them made them feel a lot more present in the world itself and I loved that.

I think adding Hayden Christenson as a force ghost in return of the Jedi was a welcome change. I understand that t might be disrespecting the original actor an I know that Anakin aged but I think it’s better on a symbolic level. Anakin does in rots, Darth Vader took his place. When vader killed palpatine it was Anakin coming back. So seeing Anakin as the ghost at the point where he does in the story makes sense.
@XDLugia4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but no. The whole idea is that Vader was redeemed from the dark side and became Anakin again just before his death. In his dying moment, he was an aged Anakin of the light, hence why his ghost showed him like that. If Vader died before being redeemed, then it would make more sense.

I loved them, loved them, loved them. However, a few years later I bought the DVDs set with the new additions and I liked them even better. Some of the changes are annoying (Han was the only one who shot, the other guy was dead before he got a chance to), but overall, I enjoy the new version of the movies more than the originals. All the changes that you mentioned were great, plus, I might be alone in this, but I love seeing the young Anakin ghost at the end of ROTJ. @Spartan3227 жыл бұрын
I actually liked the Anakin change at the end of the trilogy, it actually makes a lot of sense why he'd choose that old look as a peaceful force ghost, most notably cause it was the last look of him before he turned into Darth Vader and becoming what he should have been like (even though he never saw himself as what he should have became) instead of what he was. It also be more comforting being remember the young man he was instead of the old face he became. Also, I do like the prequels a fair bit too, and I felt mostly satisfied with what we got out of Lucas. And I'm not sure about the old fans of Star Wars, (as I was -1 years when the special edition came out) but I think they turned out mostly great, and they moved me emotionally. (of course I think the originals are still way superior to the prequels, but I think they concluded the circle well)

personally I liked how they added in Hayden into revenge of the sith. My reasoning is as follows; when obi-wan was telling luke about how his father died, he said that Darth Vader murdered him, and the person that was once his father, ceased to exist. When Anakin turned to the dark side, he was portrayed by Christensen rather than the original actor that portrayed him in the original cut of return of the jedi. I feel like that emphasises the point that the part of him that became a force ghost was the jedi in him, rather than what he would look like if he wasn't a cyborg at that specific time. But hey, this is just my opinion 😁

@commandercorner55757 жыл бұрын
Stevean2 The evidence is in the fact that they're cut back to back. It's basic movie logic, and if you can't understand that, then how do you follow any movie plot? One scene we see the death of the emperor, the next we get back to back cuts of celebrations across the galaxy. That's unbelievably clear that not only are they all joining together simultaneously in celebration, but that they're all celebrating the same thing, which is completely unrealistic. Naboo would have very different reasons to join together in celebration than Endor, but all we see in the movie is the battle of Endor won, which is why the Ewoks are celebrating in the first place, not the fall of the empire, not the death of the emperor, but the victory against the stormtroopers. For the humans there, the celebration was much larger, but we're given nothing to suggest anything else happened to warrant celebration on those other planets, and the cuts suggest they're happening simultaneously.

The "Close the blast doors!" line was IN the original '77 theatrical release (at least in some theaters)... I remember having this discussion with a friend in college (circa 1991~1992), where we each remembered scenes from the original release that were NOT in the home video versions. One that we both remembered was the "Close the blast doors, close the blast doors!... Open the blast doors, open the blast doors!" There are other parts that I've still never seen since '77. 😕
@MrJest27 жыл бұрын
Yep - there were several different versions distributed, some with slightly different dialog. I originally saw it in a first-run theater (that still had SenseSurround audio equpment at the time, and they used it to good effect), and the version I saw had the same line in it. It was only decades later that I learned about all the different print versions that were made back then, "tuned" to different projection and audio equipment.
@Screaming.Monkey7 жыл бұрын
+MrJest2 Yeah, I've also heard that there were different versions during its first run. I also remember C3PO intentionally breaking something from the red droid's head, CAUSING him to fizzle, and thereby forcing Luke to buy R2-D2. C3PO saying "the next time I stick my neck out for you..." makes more sense in that context. 😉

In the French version, for what I know, those lines have never been deleted in the original movies.

As a 9 year old in 1979 I remember borrowing the Star Wars Story LP from my local library and playing the shit out of it till I knew the lines by heart. "Close the Blast doors" was on that record. It wasn't until I saw the 1997 SE version that I heard that line again and was transported back to '79.

I disagree on the celebration across the galaxy, but only because it looks bad. If they re-did it today with better looking graphics it would be fine. Or even better, cut in actual set shots with real actors.
@gtabro13377 жыл бұрын
Moonbolt Yeah some more realism to these celebration scenes would be nice, I can still appreciate the idea to make it seem grander and connect all 6 movies.
@rentheadangelcollins7 жыл бұрын
The realism is NOT having those celebrations! They wouldn't have known! The Emperor's death wasn't instantly known throughout the galaxy! And the Empire was still primarily in control. They shouldn't have had a clue yet!
@isthisit7817 жыл бұрын
two arguments. one, who says they didn't have cell phones or similar international alert services to spread news instantaneously. also most of the planetary governments were most probably not supporting the empire and could therefore unseat, for the most part anyway, the empires representatives and or the local militias who "control" the planetary governments.
@rentheadangelcollins7 жыл бұрын
Roger Samaniego Rogue One kind of proves that...And they still don't seem to have things like cell phones in The Force Awakens, so...The most high-tech things they have in communications are more akin to walkie-talkies...and VERY primitive e-mail, which only the governments seem to have(ie. the transmission of the Death Star Plans to the Rebel Alliance).

My only complaint with the change is that it appears the celebration happens the same day as the death of the Emperor and the second Death Star. That seems like a very short amount of time to get word to every plant, and I imagine some planets being less exuberant than others. I realize that they could be happening at different times, but the way the cuts work it seems like it is happening at the same time as the Ewok celebration. The change in the music was great though, much more thoughtful like the future may be uncertain, but it is full of hope.

+Adam Edwards This isn't the middle ages. Messengers don't travel from place to place spreading news. I'm sure with the communication and vast interstellar network they have established, spreading such huge information so quickly isn't difficult. Also they showed the more advanced plants celebrating which would undoubtedly get word quicker.

The. “Close the blast doors” line was in the origin release before Empire Strikes Back and it being subtitled a new hope. It disappeared during an early rerelease and was later restored as you state here in the video. I know this because I saw what is now episode 4 many times in the theater and had a bootleg VHS. CPO’s extended dialog explaining how the tractor beam worked was also in the original release.

It actually makes alot of sense having the stormtroopers wainting in formation in the hanger. The military will have you get into a formation for everything. Especially if your on a giant battle station the size of a moon. The ammount of men needed to act apon a prison break is not that many. You also overhear a storm trooper ask another if they know whats going on, the other replies with "its probably just another drill". With so many units being stationed on the death star and with communications not being sent down the chain of command, of course there are going to be units standing around in a formation. They wouldnt be in formation if it wasn't on high alert, they'd probably reside at their barracks or wherever their specific unit is stationed on the death star. A formation is also not just for show, its accountability.

When I was a kid, I was in the Star Wars Fan Club and got those magazines monthly. I remember reading about a scene that very few got to see. It was in the beginning on Tatooine and involved Biggs talking to Luke about going to the academy. I don’t know/remember why it was cut, but I remember thinking that it was helpful because nobody understood why Luke looked so upset when Biggs was killed.
