The “mercy” Maul asks for is death, Palpatine denying him that is much worse. Maul is one of the few who knows the full extent of Palpatine’s power

No. Just no. The guy who clinged with tooth and nail onto life on a junkpile, who turned himself into a spider-centaur-cyborg, resorted to c@nnibalism and eating garbage to survive would never beg for death. The scene in Season 7 is the one that's out-of-character, not this one. This is who Maul and all Sith really are: cowards.

@@VerebazsI respectfully disagree because if you read the Darth Maul books, Maul was tortured and beaten almost daily, so he would rather die than go through all that again because as previously stated, Maul knows the full extent of both Sidious’s power and cruelty.

@@Verebazsthis is just factually wrong. Maul, being one of Sidious’ only 3 apprentices, AND been tortured physically and mentally by Sidious, is why Maul begged for death. Maul had been tortured basically his entire life, and in that moment when he was defeated by Sidious, all he wanted was to die and be free from all his pain. Are the sith cowardly? That’s up for debate. However, claiming that Maul didn’t want to die here is flat out wrong.

I love how Sidius coming in and soloing Savage and Maul is instant karma for Satine, but then you remember that this is the guy who is responsible for all of this in the first place... *literally all of it!* Maul's life being hell, the clone wars, Anakin's fall and that's just the *big stuff* Sidius has caused so much suffering on a literally *galactic* scale that, as much as you hate Maul at this point, you *despise* Sidius even more.

RIP Satine Kryze. It’s also a real testimony to Obi Wan’s character that he doesn’t give in to the Dark Side despite all that happens. Sidious doesn’t get his hands dirty often. But when he does, he will completely wreck you and have the most sadistic fun doing it. He plays with Maul and Savage the whole time not just to keep to the Rule of Two, but to ensure Maul cannot disrupt own his plans.

This has always been one of my favorite episodes and really shows just what Clone Wars is capable of. Satine's death still hits me in the feels every time and it goes to show how Obi-Wan understands Anakin in ways Anakin sadly never realizes. The fight between Palpatine, Maul, and Savage is also one of my favorite lightsaber battles in all of Star Wars. Palps is always in the background, pulling the strings, and you can see how much he revels in this rare chance to get his hands dirty directly.

This is one of the best episodes of the entire show, important character deaths, even Sidious getting off his butt for the first time and showing why he's the dark lord of the Sith. All the dialogue was top tier and Maul gets some of the best lines. FYI, Maul's story is continued in a comic called Darth Maul, Son of Dathomir, it's a good read and is canon.

Sidious is the closest thing to Maul's father, an abusive father. When grown men or women are met by an abusive parent years after, sometimes they become a little kid again. Same case with Maul, as powerful as he was, he was taught and raised by Sidious, eventhough he had slight success later in the fight, Sidious knows how to capitalize.

Oh boy, what a ride. This episode is easily one of the top five episodes in the entire series, maybe even top 3. It just has everything that makes Star Wars in it. A quick side note before we get into the fun facts: RIP to Ian Abercrombie, the voice of Chancellor Palpatine in the Clone Wars. This episode was his original final performance before his passing in 2012, as the series originally ended after season 5. There are three more episodes in season 6 that will include his voice due to them originally being scheduled for early season 5, but this episode was the last one he was able to record. With that out of the way, let's move on to the fun facts for this episode: first off, we get to see the new armor for the Mandalorians under Maul, dubbed 'Mauldalorians' by the fandom. We also get the second and final appearance of Satine's nephew Korkie Kryze. He never shows up in any other Star Wars media and in later shows, Bo Katan says that she believes she's the last of her line, so we have to assume he died off-screen at some point. This episode also features the final appearance of the Twilight, the ship first used by Anakin and Ahsoka in the Clone Wars movie to escape with Rotta the Hutt on Teth way back in the beginning. Next, we get one of the most shocking scenes in the series, the death of Satine. Most of us assumed something would have to happen to her, but I don't think anybody was expecting her to go out like she did. Truly one of the saddest, most gut wrenching scenes in any Star Wars media. This would lead into the revelation of Bo Katan being Satine's sister and that brief conversation with Obi-Wan. His line revealing this is actually a callback to when Obi-Wan confronts Padme about where Anakin went in Revenge of the Sith before she goes to Mustafar, where he says "Anakin is the father, isn't he? I'm so sorry." Lastly, we need to talk about the fight between Sidious, Maul, and Savage. This is one of the few moments where we see Palpatine take matters into his own hands and deal with something personally. It just shows how powerful Maul has become, to have Sidious call him a rival is both terrifying and a huge compliment to what he accomplished. We get another callback when Maul senses Palpatine's arrival, using the exact words Vader uses when he first senses Obi-Wan on the Death Star in A New Hope, adding only the word 'master.' Then of course, the actual fight itself. This is yet another example showing just how strong and capable Palpatine is. This is probably the second best fight in the show, only topped by one we will get later on. This fight is also the only instance we see Palpatine use both of his Sith lightsabers at the same time. A lot of people forget that he has two, but if you remember the fight between him and Mace Windu in Revenge of the Sith when Mace breaks the office window and kicks Palpatine, Palpatine's lightsaber gets knocked out of his hand and out the window. Then, when he's fighting Yoda, he has a lightsaber again. I'm not sure, but I think this was just a minor continuity error or oversight originally, so this was an awesome way to correct that. And this fight is where Savage Opress meets his end. It's such a neat detail seeing the pale green Nightsister magick leak from his stab wounds and slowly shrinking to his original size before he ultimately dies. We also get to see that, despite his constant abuse and treating him more like a subordinate than family, Maul did genuinely care for his brother. And we end with Maul being tortured with Force lightning and Sidious saying he has "other uses" for him, which is definitely a fate worse than death. We don't get to see it in the show, so if you want to find out exactly what happens, read the Son of Dathomir comics. This was such a fun time! I always love seeing reactions to this episode especially just because of how great that fight is. Next week starts the final arc of season 5. See you guys then 😀

This was the final episode Ian Abercrombie recorded as Palpatine, before passing away, hence the dedication to him. While he also voiced Palpatine in the Rush Clovis-arc of Season 6, that arc was originally planned to be part of Season 5 (it was replaced in the release schedule by the Younglings-arc, probably two or three weeks before it actually was supposed to air), so that performance was recorded earlier. Fun fact #1: The black hands on the armor of Maul's Mandalorian soldiers is a reference to the white hand Saruman's Uruk-Hai put on themselves in Lord of the Rings. Fitting, since both Maul and Saruman are trying to subvert the war started by their Masters, for their own gain. #2: Palpatine did in fact have two lightsabers in Revenge of the Sith. He used the one inlaid with gold against Windu, until Windu kicked it out of his hand, and it fell out the window. He used the second one in the fight against Yoda. #3: The ship Obi-Wan borrowed from Anakin is indeed the Twilight, which Anakin used from the pilot movie to Season 2's Children of the Force. The reason Anakin kept using it through-out Season 1, wasn't really lore-based, rather a production necessity: they simply didn't have a large enough asset library at the time, so they couldn't afford not to reuse completed assets. This changed by Season 2, so the Twilight fell out of use, and the production crew figured this would be a good time to send the ship to the junkyard.

Mother Talzin was never as powerful as Sidious, but she was the one being in the entire galaxy besides Yoda who could even come close to being a direct threat to him. @@nikos731 Talzin didn’t hold off Sidious and Dooku’s assault under her own power alone. Maul also gave Talzin all of his strength as well to add to her own, but even with their combined power within her, she was still clearly losing, which was why she sacrificed herself to save Maul, as she knew they would both be killed by Sidious if she didn’t. They were partners at first, and they did trade dark side secrets with each other, but Sidious was always the more powerful and dominant one in their relationship. Their levels of mastery in the dark side was comparable, but Sidious’s was ultimately the superior.

SPOILERS AHEAD: Go look at the comic again. She was indeed holding both Sidious and Dooku alone. Maul was fooling around with Grievous. Maul did beg Talzin to use his powers (basically killing him) to increase her powers, but she was too soft for that. Whoever was the most "dominant" is pure speculation. If we are talking about facts she was powerful with Dark Magic, Sidious was powerful with the Dark side of the Force. In the end ofc none of that mattered. What mattered was who was more ruthless, more strategic and who had an entire empire's army at his disposal.

Spoiler Which makes the fact that he cradled Maul in a similar manner, after fatally wounding him, pretty darn ironic; as well as a testament to his good character.

Maul put on a brutal figth against the most powerful being in the galaxy. It's a pity that some people, despite the statements of Lucas, Nick Gillard and Ian McDiarmid, still believe that Sidious could not have torn Windu apart in the office

Indeed. Windu has openly admitted that he was not as strong as Yoda, and Yoda in turn admitted that he was never able to beat Darth Sidious.

Are you ready for some ridiculous fanfic head-canon? We really don’t know all that much of Satine or her family Kryze outside of what Obi Wan tells us. And Disney has not shown us any interest in the Last Mandalorian Civil War so we only have the Legends comics. Korkie, is Satine’s nephew. But we don’t know who his parents are, and we can deduce that it sure is hell NOT Bo Katan. So 15 years ago, dissidents tried to have Satine killed. The chancellor sent to Jedi protect her. Qui-Gon Gin and his padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. We know that sometime during this mission Obi-Wan was alone with the Duchess for a very long time. Korkie has the same eyes and dimples as Kenobi. So he was raised in secret as Satine’s nephew to protect him from both rival clans, and to keep him from following Obi-Wan on some damned fool idealistic crusade like Anakin did. The reason this was such a popular piece of head-canon is because nobody knew who the hell Rey’s parents were. And making her a Kenobi made a hell of a lot more sense than what they actually did. It doesn’t matter anyway, because Korkie got punched out of the franchise. We never see him again after that hit.

yup this is the single best episode of the clone wars... doesn't get better as a single episode.... but there are better story arcs they're all on the epic level from now on out.. with a few arcs that were just OK there's only like one or two from here until season seven end it's all epic

Saying Maul deserved what happened to him is kind of a horrible thing to say, Palpatine tortured Maul enough as is, he's the reasons Maul has no family, the reason why he's a sith, the reason why he's so broken and bitter Mauls whole being is all because of Palpatine, even the tattoos on Mauls body are but a crude reminder from Palpatine to Maul, Palpatine put those tattoos on Maul himself, the ink was made from one of the deadliest and most painful poisons in the galaxy and then Palpatine craved them into Mauls flesh with a lighsaber
