I would argue that maybe Anakin's loss to Count Dooku in AotC might have humbled him and helped him mature so quickly. It's a reach but I think it's at least a contributing factor.

To answer your concerns about Anakin and Grievous, Dave Filoni mentioned in an interview that they wrote the show in a way that ensured Anakin and Grievous never came face to face. Obi-Wan meets him without Anakin several times.

The meta reason for TCW Anakin's personality being so different from AOTC is essentially because Matt Lanter was asked to do his best Luke/Han impression because he was playing "Deak Starkiller," only for him to find out he was playing Anakin. There was backtrack from Hayden's Anakin to make the "Anakin should have been Han Solo of the PT" narrative. And I think Mat Lucas was perfect for teenage Anakin. Matt Lanter's voice for AOTC era Anakin is like using Adam Driver to voice ANH Luke. It wouldn't fit at all.

Correction about the means to restrain force sensitives. In ATOC Obi Wan is imprisoned and cougth in a force field.

I'm glad you praise this but also acknowledge it's flaws. Some people gloss over its continuity errors.

The episodes with the clones were the best ones of the season. However, the battle droids can get annoying at times. No wonder Grievous hates those droids and getting pissed off with them.

Actually TCW takes place two months after AOTC, which is even more damaging to the continuity.

If you like to rewatch the entire saga chronologically as i do, i would recommend watching 2003 CW up until Anakin gets knighted. That way you get more character develpment, Ventress' introduction, the battle between her and Anakin and Anakins knighting without any large contradictions in the story.

Clone centered episodes are always the best

The Clone Wars is a tricky show for me. On one hand, I have a ton of nostalgia for it and I think it's a very good show. I particularly love Ahsoka and her relationship with Anakin, along with the clones in general. On the other hand, not only have I read the old pre-TCW comics that the show retconned and think that they are superior, but I also believe that the comics are far more consistent with the films, maintaining the validity of certain dialogue from Revenge of the Sith, keeping characters from the films consistent, and not introducing game-changing characters like Ahsoka.

Anakin was whipped by Dooku. That taught him to take his training and Obi-wan seriously.

A big reason why I love Clone Wars is because it so masterfully fleshes out what Obi-Wan told Luke in A New Hope. In the prequels, we never see Anakin be a great starfighter pilot, or a cunning warrior, and we never see the brotherhood and friendship that Obi-Wan speaks of. We get all of that in the Clone Wars

The clone wars boost strong continuity and breaks some minor moments to give it some cool rivalry's. Grevious vs obi and Anakin vs dooku are merky in the continuity. But the show more than makes up for these issues

The way I see the changes in Anakin is that getting his ass handed to him by count dooku and getting married worked as a a wake up call. It wouldn’t make sense if Anakin still thinks he is stronger than Yoda after losing his hand. The instant maturity is still inconsistent but thats the way I like to see it.

I agree with a lot of what you said, I love this show to death but when it comes to continuity the Clone Wars and the prequels seem like two different continuities especially with the way Anakin and the clone troopers are handled

I think one of the reasons that Anakin is portrayed the way he is is because at the time the 08 series was released, the 03 series was still kind of canon. Thats why many of the characters designs such as Yoda, Dooku and even Ventress in the 08 series are very reminiscent or just 3D versions of their 03 counterpart. So it's almost like when you get to the end of season 1 of the 03 series and obi wan has his short hair and they both now have their upper body armour, that's where the 08 series begins. So although the 03 series is no longer canon, the 08 series was created with the assumption that it was, and that what happened between AOTC and the start of the 08 series was basically shown in the 03 series. Thats why the 08 series doesnt pick up immediately after AOTC, because the 03 series had already done all that. So yes, in context of the show itself, maturer Anakin makes less sense; in the meta context that it was written with the 03 series being canon, that fills in a lot of the gaps as to why he is the way he is. 08 anakin is essentially starting out as the Anakin from the end of the 03 series. That may have been a bit of a ramble but I just kind of wanted to get this information out there and for you and other people just to be aware that that is the case. 👍🏻 Glad you like season 1, it only ups the ante from here...

I believe the last time Anakin and Dooku meet before the events of Revenge of the Sith in the Clone Wars are a few months apart to around a year.

Regarding Anakin in AOTC vs Anakin in TCW: by the time of AOTC starts, Anakin's been sleep deprived for weeks, because of his vision/nightmares of his mother suffering at the hands of the Tuskens. Add to that, he's reunited with his childhood crush, who's constantly sending him mixed signals. Then his mother dies in his arms. All this comes on top of an already strained master-apprentice relationship with Obi-Wan. Considering all this it's really no wonder, his whiny and unstable. By the time TCW starts, he's no longer Obi-Wan's padawan. He has a stable relationship with Padme. And he uses his grief for his mother, and his guilt over the Tusken slaughter to better himself. Not to mention Dooku served him a big plate of humble pie.

As you watch the series you’ll see Anakin’s character development

I like to presume certain elements from the 2003 Clone Wars show are still canon, like the battle of Courasant, and that they taken place either before or offscreen to events of this Series. Also I think this is meant to take place a few months into the Clone Wars because Mace says in the 2007 Movie that General Grievous was a ‘NEW’ droid leader.

I’m interested to see you’re journey through this series. Although I have issues with the show. The first 2 seasons are pretty kiddy but it does mature with its audience as it goes on. I don’t like Anakin in this series, if I’m being honest, and this might piss some people off. Anakin has barely any character development in this entire series. 2003 clone wars altogether was 2 hours and shows Anakin transition from a whiny teenager to a mature adult from AOTC to ROTS. Anakin is already mature in 2008 clone wars, and not to mention but although I do like Matt Lanter, he sounds nothing like Hayden Christiansen. The voice actor who voices Anakin in 2003 clone wars sounded like Hayden Christiansen even if he was whiny. I didn’t like the whole Anakin vs Dooku fights, as I preferred that the last time they fought was in AOTC and In ROTS Anakin says “My powers have doubled since we last met count.” I would preferred that instead of them fighting like it’s every other Thursday. Same goes for the Grevious vs Obi-Wan encounter. I really wish Grevious and Obi-Wan haven’t come across one another throughout this series because In ROTS I’m pretty sure it was intended they were fighting for the first time, and Grevious doesn’t know what he’s up against. But my main issue with the show, is Grevious. We all know how Grevious was in 2003 clone wars, he was an absolute badass. However, I was not a fan of what Filoni did to Grevious. I understand George kinda intended him to be that way like a plot device but he had to chance to make Grevious more than that. And it’s worth mentioning that this show didn’t fit in the EU as it was the current canon at the time. It’s fits better in New canon, but it was left in the EU timeline and it contradicts a lot, it broke a lot of the lore, and opened more problems that weren’t fixed. I liked the new characters they introduced Ahsoka, Hondo, and many more. The show gets better as you go on and when you get to the final season it will be worth it. Anyway have a nice day!

you do know that when netflix had the clone wars, it did not organize it in chronological order. but to be honest, the clone wars is an anthology series. it's not really supposed to be in chronological order. it's like war stories that your grandpa would tell you.

I personally think that the war should be lengthened to 5 years. The first two years to focus on the dark horse comics when Anakin was still obi-wan's student after AOTC. The next 2 and a half years for the clone war seasons, and the last few months for the outer rim sieges and ROTS

Thank you for the review it's always nice to see someone new join the clone wars fandom this show was one of the reasons why I got into Star Wars the other reason was because my father showed me the phantom menace and attack of the clones I would have been ten years old when the clone wars first released and I've always been a huge fan of Sir Christopher Lee and I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for him so having him play count Dooku was perfect he performed the role of Saruman brilliantly. Unpopular opinion Clone Wars 2003 is better because it has better continuity between the films.

Glad you liked it. Many people (but not all) consider this season to be bad and they tend to only really get on board in season 3. I love the whole show though most of my annoyances are in this season. Season 3 the show get's to be just absolutely awesome and each season basically just gets a little better. 3 of my top five favourite parts of Star Wars are from The Clone Wars and I'll be interested to hear your thought's when you get there. There is actually a lot of confusion about how much George was actually involved in the show, but I've done a lot of digging into it, Through various interviews with George, Dave and the cast. What I have found is that for the most part he was there but pretty hands off in season one but after that he ended up having quite a lot to do with the show. He was much more involved than many on the internet would lead you to believe. But he also wasn't in the recording booths working with actors he had a very strong presence and many of the episode ideas were his and Dave Filoni, who learned from George personally every step of the way would constantly make sure that the things they were doing passed the "George test". Dave has even reached out to George to double check that he isn't stepping to far as recently as his work on the Mandalorian. I really wish George could be back in control of everything but at very least I am very thankful that we have Dave doing his best with the projects Disney let's him do.

The cool challenge they had with Clone Wars was making sure Anakin and Grievous never met. They could have a ship-on-ship dogfight, but they could never meet face to face and they had to be careful about that. There's one point where Anakin and Grievous are captured and are exchanged simultaneously so they had to make sure that Anakin was unconscious and that Grievous couldn't look at him. So they had to make Anakin unconscious and put Grievous in some sort of restraint where he couldn't move his head

I'm glad you liked it, I thought you wouldn't because Anakin is a bit different in this than the movies, but that's probably just because the clone wars gets more time to show his positive traits and doesn't need to show his negative ones.

Never actually seen the show in Chronicle logical order. I always watch it by the date they were aired then because that's how I watched it as a kid. I probably will one day watching chronological order but that won't happen anytime soon I'm so glad you liked this season it is definitely my third favorite season out of them all. technically my favorite season is season 4 because of Darth Maul and at the tail end of season 3 where we get to see a little bit more Darth Maul as well. I can't wait for you to discuss those Seasons. It's going to be awesome

I wouldn't call the chronological order it's intended order. That makes it sound like the episodes are in the wrong order. They're not. They're listed in the order that they aired. Lucas intended for it to not be chronological, kind of like how the old film serials used to be.

Wait, I watched Clone Wars as it was released, so obviously in chronological order... and then I rewatched it again recently on Disney+, and besides the movie being listed separately from the series it was in perfect chronological order - it literally just played from season 1 episode 1 to season 7 episode 12 automatically, so I'm confused as to how it didn't work like that for you? I watched it from the Disney+ app on an Android OS, is it perhaps different when watching on a desktop or other operating systems?

One of the big inconsistencies to me and that will never allow me to believe 2008 clone wars is canon to the 6 films, is how many times obi wan faces grievous. In revenge of the sith at the beginning of film grievous says to anakin and obi wan: jedi so we finally meet or something along those lines. Also obi wan vs grievous in revenge of the sith grievous says a certain line that makes me believe revenge of the sith is the 1st time grievous and obi wan have ever fought. Grievous: you fool, I've been trained in your jedi arts by count dooku.

You will have fun with the inconsistencies in the series :D In fact Anakin and Dooku meet several times. Five times, I think. Yes, it's silly, but those are some of the little flaws in the series. Instead, TCW pays meticulous attention that Anakin and Greivous never meet. Pretty ironic. However, I find it quite funny that the series builds up a rivalry between Obi-Wan and Grievous. And seriously, how could the series have worked over seven seasons if the main heroes and villains on both sides never meet?

Just a thought with Grievous and obi Wan he could be stating that Dooku has taught him a few things about the Jedi arts to better fight them since they last fought in the clone wars, just a way to defend it.

The continuity problems between The Clone Wars and the PT absolutely dwarf the supposed continuity problems between the PT and OT. I find it reprehensible that the final episodes of the show actually take place DURING Revenge of the Sith. The existence of Ashoka actually could have worked if they had the guts to kill her off before the end of the show. And Im sorry, but this Clone Wars Anakin is not a future Darth Vader. He just isnt. I find amazing that some people cant buy prequel Anakin as Darth Vader but they buy Clone Wars Anakin. I just dont get it.

The part about R3 being assigned to try to get R2's data is explained in the episode - Republic protocol means that all droids have to have frequent memory wipes to minimise the risk of the data they carry doesn't fall into the wrong hands - Anakin never wipes R2's memory because the data and experience R2 has helps in many situations, so he takes the risk of not wiping his memory assuming R2 will never be compromised. The Separatists are aware of this, likely due to R2's constant involvement and success in thwarting their plans, as well as knowing that Anakin, the most notorious Jedi General, doesn't always follow the rules, and so they assume that getting a hold of R2's data banks would be the easiest way of getting a heap of top secret Republic data, namely their battle plans. Also keep in mind that Grievous was almost always acting on Dooku's commands, who was acting on Palpatine's commands - and Anakin told Palpatine just about everything.

The Clone Wars is awesome! My all-time favorite tv show. If you've only seen the 1st season your in for a treat the show gets better in better. Both in story and animation.

Surprisingly, I actually don't mind the nonlinearity of the TCW seasons, especially with Season 3 Episode 1. If you were looking at it from the perspective of 99, it would be his arc - a deformed clone janitor who died a soldier.

I like clone wars 2008, but I find it unnecessary for the 6 films. While people say clone wars 2008 makes the prequels watchable, Which i totally disagree with. Prequels are good without the clone wars 2008, just watch prequels and pay attention. I also don't feel like anakin in this show is the same as the one george made in the films. I never liked anakin in this show. And anakin is actually my favorite character in the entire star wars franchise only cuz the 6 films and his story. Imo clone wars 2008 makes decent filler for the 6 films. I also don't find the show canon to the films.

If we're also taking into account the 2003 CW series, the fact that Masters Ki-Adi Mundi, Shaak Ti and Aayla Secura already battled Grievous who made his first appearance on Hypori by standing up against 5 Jedi already raises a suspicion that he was trained by Dooku.
