Stam Fine looks at 2017's Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, written and directed by Rian Johnson. It's a film beloved by every single person that saw it, and also somehow hated by a by every single person that saw it, but even more mathematically impossibly, loved to be hated by every single person that saw it, many of whom are possibly also single. IDK, It took me five years to realise I could count to 10 if I used both hands. While we're sweepingly generalising, what did you think of this difficult second album or middle-child?

The Last Jedi is like pulling into a cul-de-sac with a crack-house on it, getting shot at, doing a U-turn and driving off alive, but shaken. It's a dead end, leaves you feeling lost and confused, you're more jaded and wary, but you live on... and it makes you think twice about where you drive.

'The Last Jedi' was the only Star Wars movie to make brave narrative choices and say something of significance since 'The Empire Strikes Back.' It was like wearily pulling up to a McDonalds drive-through, prepared for limp, undercooked fan fries, and unexpectedly finding oneself handed a piquant thai salad.

When Leia Mary Poppins'd her way from the vacuum of space and lived, I laughed out loud on the theater. Star Wars has done a lot of ridiculous things, but that was the most absurd. I couldn't take anything else seriously after that.

That crack about Leia's callow youth at the beginning is way off. The Death Star was an existential threat to the Rebellion, so taking it out was an absolute necessity, even if doing so cost the Rebellion a significant chunk of its assets. Poe's stunt cost the Resistance a significant chunk of their assets... to take out a single ship that wasn't really essential to the First Order's plans. You want to go after Leia, go after her for knowing the Empire let them get away from the Death Star and yet she still went directly to the Rebel base, apparently without ever wondering, "Gee, I wonder why they let us go?"

Strongly disagree with you on this one. Any writer / director who is put in charge of a middle chapter in a trilogy and doesn’t bother to keep the story arc from the previous entry is guilty of criminal negligence. Any producer who gives that clown a hundred million to do that is also negligent. Incompetence up and down. From Holdo’s secret plan that she won’t tell anyone about, to yomama jokes, to canto bite, to Snoke.
@kaitlyn__L

It’s admittedly kind of hard to imagine what following the “arc” of the previous film would lead to though. A remake of V just as it was a remake of IV? It’s not like JJ had any actual plans, he’s said so multiple times. If he’d said “okay I’m setting up x, y, and z” that’s one thing; but it seems kind of like he went “oh you know, just follow-on from the ending”.

But there are other channels for that… But I still love your reviews because they are sharp, quick witted and sardonic. “Like the last guy to choke on a peanut the day before the Heimlich maneuver was invented”? I find your review interesting, and I do agree that Star Wars needed to be shaken up since George Lucas basically remade his own trilogy with the prequels....and had no one to tell him what didn't work. However, TLJ was a convoluted mess; it could have been good but the writing was pretty bad.

Yes! Thank you! I have been saying for years now that this movie is genuinely interesting. It takes risks. It fumbles the ball quite a bit here and there, it is by no means perfect, and the entire Canto Bheit thing should have been scrapped, But this movie really did actually take chances. It trusted its audience to be able to accept. The change was inevitable and not just coming, but actually here. I think the core of the movie is when Kylo says to let the pass, go, kill it if you have to. And despite the many flaws in this movie (every scene with Holdo would have been better with Admiral Akbar, so why not use Akbar, someone we know rather than a new character that just vaguely annoys us?) I was genuinely happy because this was the first movie since 1982 genuinely take a chance. I was actually happy. And then, before I even made it out of the theater, my mood crashed. Because the thing fans hate more than anything else in this world is change. They say they want something, but they don’t. They want the old thing, but with a new paint job. Instantly knew this movie was going to create a fire storm and notoriously gutless Disney was going to pull back and try to undo the whole thing, movie would suck. I recognize it all in an instant, and sure enough I was right. But I’m a movie this is acceptable, as a transitional stage in a franchise it’s kind of brilliant, And everybody hates it, because fans are just the worst
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 5 ай бұрын
Yep, exactly. Some moments didn’t land but I really appreciated what it was trying to do. And with all the outcry, I also knew Disney wasn’t likely to commit. I had vague hopes they might, but of course I didn’t really expect it.

Luke deserved so much more than this. We waited all these years to see him as clinically depressed? And would the man who refused to kill his father even momentarily consider murdering his nephew in his sleep? And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Beautiful cinematography, yes, but horrible, unforgivable continuity. It stains all that came before--and almost destroys it. I only wish to God we could forget this hideous monstrosity!

I liked this film the most of the sequel trilogy, despite the weak plotting in the B-story; I *loved* its take on Luke; Mark Hamill gives the performance of his life here--but the reaction to it from fans raised on the 1990s Expanded Universe, not to mention the "go woke go broke" crowd, was so hostile and toxic that it makes it unpleasant to think about in hindsight. And Rise of Skywalker craps on it to such a degree that most of what it was setting up became pointless anyway. I would have liked to see an Episode 9 that really built on TLJ's themes of Kylo maturing into the new Big Bad, blood being less special than we thought, and the Force not belonging to the Jedi, instead of just bringing back a bunch of stuff calculated to be crowd-pleasing (that wasn't anyway). I think it would have made The Last Jedi look better, much as Return of the Jedi, for all its faults, amplified the quality of The Empire Strikes Back.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 5 ай бұрын
Hard same. I loved a lot of choices made here, yet RoS throwing it away makes the lost-potential quite bitter in hindsight. I also don’t understand all the people who say it “threw heroes’ legacies away” and so on. They must’ve not watched to the end, because the entire film is ABOUT reminding Luke of his legacy (which he’s forgotten/distorted in his mind in his isolation). He wouldn’t have gone and done the final fight if he hadn’t been convinced by that, and realised he’d messed-up. Unless they can’t even tolerate a plot where someone realises they made a mistake, because they’ve got to always be perfect little platonic ideals of the character’s best-bits. But as far as I’m concerned, saying this film “ruined Luke” is like saying he should always be a moisture farmer instead of a pilot and a Jedi. It dredges-up first impressions but makes no recognition of how it developed from there. And it’s a tendency I’ve seen in other fandoms which dare to have older characters not be stuck in amber. If they’re not exactly as remembered, even if the new path makes total sense from their prior characterisation and theming, it’s “ruined”. Talk about absolutism.
