Our Führer quill18 Star Wars characters have their depths and subtlety, as if they were in a real world. Star Trek, although many have great and lovable personalitites, most of the time falls short of subtlety to be believable in the real world. The only one I've seen done perfectly, done as good as a Star Wars character, is Jean Luc Picard.

Our Führer quill18 They were stereotypical and they all break their stereotypes later on. Han went from the stereotypical scoundrel to a lovable hero in Empire. Leia went from damsel in distress to a badass (and badmouthed) sharpshooter. Luke went from the whiny hero to a wiser knight in Return. Shit, even Vader went from the stereotypical villain to a redeemed hero. Spock, Kirk, Bones, Scotty, Chekov, have yet to do so. Ps. Spock does break his wise smartass stereotype to humane in the reboot.

But in Star Trek, some of the characters are so unrealistic like Spock, who only relies on logic, that's not possible even for Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory. You can say Spock is an alien. But in Star Wars, the aliens have the same feelings as really human, even for the droids. However I guess Star Trek focuses on science, Star Wars focuses on the spirit and storytelling, so yeah. you cannot say that Star Trek is the best at everything or Star Wars in the best at everything, they are both really great!

Luciano Vargas​​ you're free to disagree, but the sheer design, and scale of ships in Star Trek puts Star Wars to shame. You have COUNTLESS Starship classes of the Federation, ranging from Constitution Class, Excelsior Class, Galaxy Class, Sovereign Class, Intrepid, Defiant, Ambassador, etc etc etc, each with their own awesome and unique designs, technological capabilities, and crew. And that's just the Federation side, we've not even began to talk about Romulan, Klingon, Ferengi, Cardassian, and alien other ships. Each have their own design and features that make them memorable in their own unique ways, and that puts anything to shame in Star Wars. You got the Millennium Falcon and the Executor. That's all I'll give Star Wars. Things like Slave-I, and those Jedi Starfighters are pretty decent too. But letters of the alphabet and giant triangles just don't compare to Warbirds, Battlecruisers, and fleets of the Federation. They put on some really really cool dogfight scenes, but that falls more under special effects, which was pointless because it's a simple scenario of my daddy is richer than your daddy. Star Wars ships have no shields, no transport technology, no cloaking, and the fastest I've heard of their capability is the Millennium Falcon saying it can go point five past light speed. That and no need to bring up their flub with parsecs. Warp Speed puts that to absolute shame. And even if the Falcon can go a bit faster than that, it's always breaking down and all around unreliable. Without Star Trek, the ships of Star Wars I'm willing to bet wouldn't have been half as memorable. And a lot of those ships are nothing special. They basically just gave it to Star Wars based on the Millennium Falcon and the Death Star, which is more a station than a ship. Star Trek has given more and it's all memorable in its own way. Their ships are absolutely gorgeous, and can be downright intimidating when needed to be.

They'll get Enterprise, and then get stuck. Ask somebody who has never seen Star Wars, and they'll say, with little hesitation, The Millennium Falcon, X-Wing, Death Star, or Star Destroyer. All of the Star Trek federation ships are incredibly similar, to the point where only the most hardcore fans can actually tell one from the other(Except for the enterprise). It gets even worse which the other factions. Now explain to me why, exactly, any ship from Star Trek is cooler than the Millennium Falcon.

People should realize that one franchise inspired the other one and Roddenberry and Lucas respected each other. Trek paved the way for modern SciFi in TV and movies as by the time TOS aired western was the most popular genre. I don’t get what this is with Star Trek being what inspires researchers and mathematicians. Star Wars inspired me into a lifelong pursuit of science, finding out what is possible, bringing fiction to reality. Star Wars ignited a passion in me for space when I was 5. I remember watching science documentaries and reading everything I could find out about space when I was 6/7. Never was there a moment where I went “wow, that is some good film making. I should go make movies”. Thats unrealistic. To me, Star Wars inspires Scientists and researchers, whilst Star Trek inspires geeks. Not nerds, nerds are smart and are obsessed with math and actually usually do end up in a research/science career. Geeks. Obsessed with fantasy. Still playing with plastic toys from Walmart at age 30. Geeks and know it alls are all I see come from the Star Trek fan base.

Indeed BUT Star Trek: TMP (1979) gets its ass handed to it by Star Wars: TESB (1980) for a closer comparison and dare I say Star Wars: ANH (1977) stands right along side Star Trek: TMP in effects.

Star Trek original series started in 1966 so the special effects weren't going to be phenomenal plus there was budget constraints, Where as the first Star Wars movie came out in 1977 and had a larger budget for effects! 11 years doesn't seem a lot but it's enough to dramatically change the technology available for use in special effects, just look at the Star Trek The Motion Picture, that came out in 1979 and the sets and special effects were amazing!

+Matthew Ruane Because effects from the 70's can stand the test of time pal. Look at the original Star Wars, it was ground breaking at the time. In the 1930's King Kong's effects were perfect. Hell, an idiot would think of King Kong's effects as outdated when in actual fact, it took the filmmakers years of hard work to finally put it together where as nowdays, it takes like a year or 2 to get the effects done.

Yeah, same here. Personally, I do not compare the 2 because to me they have a completely different fanbase and are way too different. Star Wars is better when it comes to an Science Action Flick and Fantasy. Star Trek is more for Science Fiction and more for people who are interested in social debates and understanding new worlds. You have to understand more with Star Trek than Star Wars. Personally, I prefer Star Trek but i do appreciate what Star Wars has brought to the movie world. I will forever though be a Trekkie.

Im more of a star wars fan but they dont explore the many races and cultures of their franchise nearly as well as star trek has. Those cultures for races that only showed up in a single episode contained (mostly) well written backstories and even had cultures so different from anything on earth that the crew of the enterprise were forced to face unique ethical and moral dilemmas more than once and not always with the brightest outcome.

Star wars: a new hope had a really small budget of $14Mil because noone thought it'd be good but because of creativity with the effects and things that were never done before, they were really good for the time (and a lot better than the star trek effects at that time) but still i dont agree with a lot of the other things they said and i thought you star trek fans would be more objective about arguements, like spock would be lol

Do you know how many warp-capable species there are in ST? The only reason they don't have a huge armada is because they're using their ships to fight each other. But if they teamed up and combined their fleets, the number of ships would rival the number in SW. And when you consider that the Borg have dozens of giant city ships making up their HQ in the Delta Quandrant, each one valuing quality over quantity, compared to only 3 superweapons in SW, you have a force (no pun intended) to be reckoned with. As for the Tox Uthat, you forget how small the thing is. I estimate it to be about 5 inches in diameter. Assuming it has a density comparable to that of diamond, 3.5 g/cm^3, a single Tox Uthat has a mass of about 3.75 kg. Assuming that the Starkiller has a mass comparable to that of Earth, it has a mass of 5.97 septillion kg. Divide 5.97 septillion by 3.75, you find that per unit mass, the Tox Uthat has more than 1.5 septillion times the destructive power of the Starkiller.

Send the Uthat through a wormhole, transwarp conduit, or quantum singularity and you can destroy systems on the other side of the galaxy just as quickly. Not to mention that when you have the ability to travel through time, ST is pretty much guaranteed to always shoot first. And I haven't even mentioned the godlike powers of the Q yet.
