"Not every decision is an economic decision. Despite the fact that you recite statistics that are narrow in time, we did provide a 38% shareholder return over the last year. I don't know how many things you invest in, but I would suspect not many things, companies, products, investments have returned 38% over the last 12 months. Having said that, it is not an economic decision to me.

Really? Last I checked I have a right to support or not support something based on my beliefs, and a right to defend it and speak my mind. If you have some kind of beef with my comments then speak your mind and make a case. If you are incapable of being able to intelligently retort and participate in a conversation and feel your only course is to throw insults, you need to take responsibility for that don't you? It's on you to become educated enough to defend what you believe in.

@MrMadBimmy, it's not about money; it's about life. It's about the fact that the civil union you're talking about doesn't give the partner the rights that they would have under marriage. How would you like your spouse to be in intensive care and not be able to visit? How would you like to adopt children and, on your partner's death, find that you have no custody of your own children?

I have never heard of the last argument you cited please can you give me the references for these to lookup. You did not understand my argument. Animla behaviour is relevant because scientists identified constants withing animals and humans which are to similar to be likely to be random and it is therfore less likely to be a mistake within genes as these would be more random. As funding is thight is those issues there are relatively little information se we need more studies, not assumptions.

If a church makes a deal with the government where they will get a tax exemption as long as they don't discriminate, and then they begin discriminating, they should absolutely lose that exemption. That was the deal with accepting the exemption in the first place!

I totally agree bwnard. Society's ignorance along with religious "interpretations" have people bringing hate to these issues. I'm straight, have been married for about the same amount of time & have a number of gay friends who are married. Happily! I was brought up in a very liberal household that taught 'If you don't like it, don't do it'. It's served me well over the years & needs to be adopted by others.

I didn't say "start" I said "start again" please don't take my words out of context, and if evolution holds true, diversity should take care of itself shouldn't it? Unless evolution isn't all true (another topic). The problem with being part of a once-oppressed minority is that homosexuality surpasses more than just Western history and a few hundred years of a timeline. The scale and magnitude is like comparing a single grape to the whole vineyard.

I like Scalia's argument. When did it become unconstitutional to deny gay marriage? The constitution is silent on it which is why it should be left to the people to decide either by popular vote or through legislators.

By the way, just to make this clear for any of you following the thread with the different conversations on this, I'm not against homosexuals okay? People can actually have different opinions, disagree and it be okay. Diversity is a beautiful thing and I'm all for it. I'm a Christian and a science/IT geek by trade. Both sides can work and play together and be friends. Just saying.

The constitution is not silent on rights of the individual, and the constitution is a document interpreted by courts as to its intent. It's a no-brainer that constitutionally, it is illegal to deny any American their basic rights and to single any one group out for discrimination.

Besides which, extending benefits to unmarried couples because we know it is wrong to discriminate against gay/lesbian people is what undermines marriage. If undermining marriage is a person's concern, then they should be all for marriage equality for everyone so that only those who take on the commitment and responsibility receive the same benefits.

Actually before marriage laws it was common to find a marriage certificate in the front of Bibles. The pastor has always been a part of marriage and states accepted this a proof of marriage. This is the egg before the chicken.

Government is the one who married you. I was married by the State of New York. I am Catholic so marriage is also a holy sacrament an i was married in a church but the "legal" marriage was by the state. When the priest says "by the power vested in me..." he is referring to the power vested by the State he is in.

The freedom to exercise religion is a freedom to practice a religion of one. Granting tax exemption to organizations that practice some forms of worship but not others is prejudicial and not just a violation of the First Amendment, but the equal protection clause in the Fourteenth. The tax exemption IS the state getting into church business. The hands-off approach would be to treat all institutions the same and collect the full array of taxes irrespective of religious status or business pursuit.

You have put your finger right on it, Tristin!! No church is required to perform a marriage service for anyone. Many churches already refuse to perform marriage ceremonies for people who are not members of the congregation, mixed-religion couples, etc. That will continue to be true. Marriage equality is about civil marriage and the benefits of the law, not about religious marriage ceremonies.

It's shame that those who would speak against being called names and ridiculed and demeaned and fight for equal rights, would call names and ridicule and demean others to make their point in response to those who have equal rights to express their opinion. It's a sad state indeed when those who would be part of an institution would tear down, even the very values and creed which they hold sacred. So bitter sweet a victory achieved when it is no longer holy, but perverse by your misdeeds.

Tell that to blacks and women who needed a 13th and 19th Amendment. The constitution you cite is a facinating and complex document that restricts just as it provides for, and sometimes its provision for one is diametrically opposed to. Also, it's not about marriage per se for those driving this issue at its highest level (the gay money and power structure), but about the tearing down of anything remotely symbolic of God's purpose for mankind.

I am in a interracial marriage, so I know what you mean but if you look at the individual, not their color because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve, you will see that real Christians arent prejudice. You love your pets or children but yet when they do something wrong you punish them, not because you hate them but because they acted wrongly and you are correcting that. I (should) love everyone, even my enemies but that doesnt mean I have to change to have them accept me.

I didn't say outlaw it, I said I don't support it and I questions on the backdrop of most decisions made in human history. Overpopulation is a poor excuse to justify anything, and considering the amount of civilizations that were great in number and have gone extinct... the number of people is a relatively small part to do with survival of the species. It only takes 2 to start again.

You are correct but we are still talking about the state. Why does homosexual marriage being accepted by the state bother you so much? I've been married almost ten years and gay men and women getting married has no effect on the sanctity of my marriage. To me adultery, spousal abuse, divorce are things that affect "traditional" marriage.

I still can't fathom how allowing gay people to get married has any impact on heterosexual lifestyles or heterosexual marriages. I've been married to my wife for 27 years and nothing that someone else does or does not do can affect the value that I place on my own marriage or on my relationship with my wife. The only kind of "support" that 'traditional marriage" needs is a healthier society where people are less concerned with imposing their own prejudices -- of all kinds -- on others.

I am not questioning his motivation here, however, I just want to point out that supporting marriage equality does NOT prevent you from capital gain. Look at the customer base of Starbucks, hispterish middle class people with a twist of sanctimony. Look at the backlash at Whole Foods when their CEO came out against gay marriage. :]

No. I wanted to know how he was going against the "heterosexual lifestyle' because I am straight and I think gay rights are incredibly important and think he's completely right in doing what he did. Besides, his company, if his shareholders don't like it, do what he says, sell your shares and move on, no ones stopping you. He is supporting my lifestyle just fine. I want to know what the "heterosexual lifestyle" was and how he wasn't supporting it, specifically.

Focusing on the lives of others and feeling the compulsion to change them [due to your own beliefs & who have absolutely no affect or impact on your life] is a waste of your time. If it was a question of reproduction for mankind, same-sex couples could always compromise with same-sex cpuples of the other gender to have co-families or something. Complicated, and maybe expensive if done via lab. Outlawing probably wouldn't help much though. Why the discussion btw?

My wife, four kids and I will never patron another Starbucks establishment again under any circumstances. Interesting how you said it is not an economic decision yet at the end of your statement you attempt to buffer your invitation to defect from Starbucks ownership by citing again the 38% return. Intellectually weak tactic sir.

It takes more than two to start a species. To ensure the diversity of the gene pool, you will need at least a few thousand animals for a certain species to generate a healthy population of descendants, otherwise the the progeny will suffer from congenital diseases and limited adaptation to nature due to the high level of inbreeding.
