Leaked video shows a Starbucks manager reprimanding a 19-year-old barista to tears in a union-busting effort. Phoenix shift supervisor Laila Dalton was disciplined after handing out union cards to coworkers. Starbucks tried to make her quit. Instead they filed for a union.

Why? You can make a lot more money if you work your way up the corporate ladder than you would with an union. Corporate executives aren’t allowed to join an union but they make a lot more than the union workers. Also, being able to choose to not show up to work like you agreed to in your contract, like the MLB players union did, is ridiculous. If you don’t like your pay of benefits, then don’t accept the job in the first place. I made sure I was pleased with my pay and benefits before accepting my job and got raises every year.
@GreyCrowe
@GreyCrowe 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmartin4641 Well that's a deceptive statement, isn't it. It's completely relative to the company you work for and the job you perform within that company, whether you'd make more in any position vs another. And you're assuming that in every case the person is looking to maximize income, whatever the cost...Or that in every case the person would want to be working in a corporate job. You're also ignoring almost 90 years of US history when higher marginal tax rates on extreme wealth/large corporations and unions began what historians call "The Golden Era" of US economics (which pulled us out of the Great Depression....caused by the previous Gilded Age...where coincidentally we had an even smaller wealth gap than we do in 2022), leading to the largest, strongest middle class of any developed nation to date. You also neglect to include that a single rise up the corporate ladder only increases a single paycheck where as unions, directly for their members, but *also* for others in the same industry or even geographic area, increase wages/work standards for everyone. That's why we no longer have child labor laws...That's why we have a 40hr work week... That's why we have workplace safety laws... That's why we have Overtime... etc..etc... Corporations over the past 100 years didn't do that out of kindness... Unions fought for it, and fought for it to be law then, so that we could enjoy it today. America moved out of the wild west 150 years ago. Maybe it's time you drop the wild west mentality.

@@GreyCrowe middle class? Do you want everyone to live a mediocre life? I’d rather have the possibility to do really well as opposed to having to settle for mediocrity. I succeeded with an union, so everyone else can do the same and take personal responsibility for their own lives. And if you’re not looking to maximize income, whatever the cost, then you’re lazy and you deserve whatever bad situation you are in because you did it to yourself with your own stupid choices.

Tha's what it was. You cannot really judge individuals by what's on paper. I work my ass off and get treated like crap. I Hate Bosses who manipulates employees. They don't understand the damage they are doing to the Company by driving away good productive employees that is the true engineers of what keep that business running, money in everybody's pockets, and comforts for the owners. This targeting of hard-working employees needs to be addressed.

Starbucks has been my favorite coffee shop. i had no idea that these Barista's were being mistreated. They always greet customers with a smile and serve as promptly as they can. It is the Employers who are the real problem with their manipulations and petty mind games they like to throw off on innocent workers and treat a worker as though they have no rights. Something need to be done about this.
@gardensofthegods

Yes but the other something that needs to be done is for customers to boycott the store and they need to stop saying it hurts the workers because the truth is that when people stop buying a product it hurts the owners and the investors and it sends them a message loud and clear . I don't go to Starbucks I never liked their gimmicky coffee . But customers who claim to love the place and want to do something need to either picket outside of the stores and do it with a license first so they don't get arrested and or stop going there stop buying their products and stop giving them your money... or at least let them know when you took it outside that you have stopped buying their products and will not return until they treat their workers better.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL and look up the law regarding recording consent for your state first. Two-party consent states are California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington. For example, a person violating California's law faces a possible misdemeanor conviction, a one-year prison sentence, and a $2,500 fine. Do not put yourself in a situation where recording someone without consent can (and will most likely be by a disgruntled employer) get you in more trouble.

Sadly Starbucks does this a lot. I’m a twenty year partner and have been targeted many times. I’ve had managers from other stores tell me to lawyer up, give statements to those lawyers, and I’ve recorded and kept up to twenty years of on and off threats to prove everything. Currently my hours are being threatened because I didn’t come in on my day off. HR protects the company not the partner. Seen it dozens of times.

Starbucks, acting like their jobs are ‘crucial’ or something. These service jobs and their managers need not take themselves so seriously. Instead of a $.40 wage increase, with that write up, they can justify $.05, which was and always is their goal, to pay as little as possible, while extracting as much work as possible. These companies DO NOT CARE whether you break your back to support them. They will ONLY take advantage of that. I saw a demo of a person who was applying for a welding position and the ad stated $15-30 per hour. The person made two welds, one obviously better than the other. When the management asked why, the applicant said the poor one was a $15 weld, and the much better one was a $30 weld. If only service workers had such an obvious way to demonstrate what these companies might achieve, if they gave even a modicum of respect to their employees. Hint: If your employees want to unionize, and you’re the manager of the shop, you’re definitely doing it wrong!
