I think what you are forgetting the most, Lore Reloaded, is the colony star ships used to forcibly remove all of Humanity's criminals all at once were designed to be cannibalized by the prisoners once they arrived at their final destinations. I think there were three such colony star systems. Only one made it to their designated final destination. The other two went off course for reasons I do not remember now. They went much, much further than they were intended. Still once they arrived at their new final destination planet(s) the prisoners had to cannibalize their star ships to survive and build new homes with. The colony space ships used had literally all of the blueprints and other necessary information in order to create their own homes. So it is not as if the prisoners were treated to the Australia Treatment -- "Good luck surviving this ceaseless hell! lol". This is all information that can be found in the Starcraft manual.
