I'm halfway through Alan Wake 2 and I'm loving it so far. Definitely my game of the year. But I also know I'm biased because I've always been a big fan of thrillers and story-driven games. Baldur's Gate 3 has way broader appeal and is basically as close to a perfect DnD Roleplaying game as a modern game has ever gotten, so my money is on Baldur's Gate.

Baldur's Gate 3 is just a cut above. I've not played a game that does so much so well in *years*. The writing is incredible, the gameplay is a great example of the genre, the character performances are some of the best I've seen in a video game- the visuals are incredibly pretty, the character creation is really in depth, and the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful. I cannot stress enough that Bg3 is what an RPG should be- the number of branching paths the story can take based on your choices puts most big "you can be a bad guy, or a good guy!" RPGs to absolute shame. And there's so many ways you can solve problems in the game world by just messing around with explosive barrels or considering the full ramifications of the fact certain classes are capable of picking up stuff *including your enemies* to throw them or carry them around. Anyone who passed it over because "it's just turn based combat?" is seriously missing out.

For me, Mario Wonder would be my game of the year. As somebody who grew up on 2D Mario, Wonder was absolutely epic and it gave you basically everything you could dream of in that genre. I think TotK was a really great game, but I do think that it had way less staying power than Breath of the Wild because it had the element of remixing the world of Breath of the Wild. Which in a lot of ways was brilliant (and Nintendo has resource flipped Zelda games before, look at OoT and MM. The fusing mechanic in TotK was really kind of amazing in a lot of ways. But I think it's more impressive to developers and game designers and less to general fans. Great game though, I loved it.)

Every other game, except BG3 and possibly AW2, are iterations of their respective series/genres. They are great-decent games, but dont make the punch of changing the landscape. TotK, Wonder, and Spiderman 2 are refinements of their previous games. RE4R at least brought RE4 into a modern light, with really good graphics to boot. Even though i havent played it and played Dead Space Remake, im okay with RE4R beating it as the horror game of the year. I just havent seen talks about Alan Wake 2 in youtube Shorts. Which i do gauge as how popular it is. Usually new games tend to pop up in YTShorts. And i just havent seen anything. Buldurs Gate 3? I cant seem to get away from them on youtube. As someone who put around 100 hours into TOTK, Baldur's Gate 3 deserves game of the year. TOTK is really good, but is also kinda just BOTW 1.5, same art style, story was structured the same, mostly the same open world. Don't get me wrong, it had its strengths, but BG3 is one of (if not) the best modern RPG's ever.

I think Super Mario Wonder should win for multiplayer since it made a bunch of small changes to the actual multiplayer platformer mechanics, making it way more tolerable to share a single screen and space with tons of players. Just looking at footage next to Sonic Superstars or other 2D Mario games mskes the differences super clear

As someone who has thoroughly enjoyed Starfield for more than 150 hours. Ain't no way should it be up for a game of the year. I'm actually a little bummed Jedi survivor isn't on it. However, I haven't played it yet, but I'm fully on board with baldur's gate 3 to get the nod. But can we just recognize that 2023 was an unbelievable year in gaming?

Unrelated but I wish that these awards shows did what the Oscar’s did for a bit where the characters are animated like there attending the show and have some stuff for if they win or lose. The game seems to be pretty popular if this many people are still wanting to play the game.

Only new game I played this year was TotK but I still think Baldurs Gate should win. But also I do think Vaush is too dismissive of Totk. Expansions dont take 4-5 years to make and then another year just for polish. Theres a lot that went into that game that made it a full fledged sequel. And trust me, when I saw in the trailers it was the same map I was disappointed, and was still fairly disappointed about that while playing. Its my biggest criticism of the game, but at the same time there was sooo much new stuff to do and explore despite that. The world was much more dense with content this time.

Lethal Company really should be a nominee. Not only does it illustrate a dystopian future where workers' rights are non-existent, but the horror of it really works well. Games like Lethal Company make me feel like "gaming is not dead yet", and there are so many things to be made and discovered. Hrot also should have been a nominee or an honorable mention. Amazing atmosphere, visuals, and concept. There needs to be a category for awful games that should have never been made. LOTR Golem would definitely win that.

Honestly, Final Fantasy 16 probably deserved to replace either Super Mario Wonder or Resident Evil 4 for a shot at game of the year. It wouldn’t have won, but the sheer scale and spectacle of the boss fights aren’t even touched by any of the other contenders. I never knew how badly I needed to fight a cosmic dragon that blasts gigalasers at you while being a dinosaur that’s the embodiment of fire, and to do it in space.
