One of my biggest issues is that the world doesn't seem to react much to your decisions or background. I went through the entire SecDef/UC Vanguard story and eventually run into random SecDef ships fighting the Crimson Fleet. I save them and they didn't acknowledge, and I didn't get to explain, that I am both SecDef and Vanguard. Felt like none of the choices I've made so far really mattered or changed anything.

@@I-HAVE-A-BOMB Also learnt recently that - You cannot roleplay as an evil character. Many NPCs are marked as “essential”, which is a very lazy implementation in creation engine. - Also you gotta not have expectations for playing a Role Playing Game. It is not an RPG. Forget about choice and consequences. For Ex: The world does not reach to the fact that you worked for the crimson fleet and did some evil stuff or you are Starborn. - Don’t have expectations regarding stories, writing quality etc It you want to play Starfield, Play it as a survival game and try to role play yourself and set limitations and adhere to it. For example In Starfield, I'm role playing as an explorer scientist with surveying, botany, zoology, Xenobiology and other science skills. And carrying the Novablast Disruptor EM weapon for an attempted pacifist play through. Hardly doing any quests. Essentially playing as a survival game with focus on crafting, outposts, surveying. This is not for everybody. That is the problem. It’s unfortunate Bethesda’s last real RPG was Morrowind and have regressed so much. None of these KZfaqrs are even mentioning any of this.

@@KamleshMallickyou’re just straight up lying. The entirety of constellation acknowledges that you’re starborn if you tell them. In fact, they won’t shut up about it. And just because you can’t kill every single NPC doesn’t mean you can’t be evil, the entirety of the crimson fleet are non hostile once you join them, and you can even help them attack ships if you see them engaged in a dogfight. The lengths yall cross to straight up lie is just weird

And for everyone saying, "NMS aDdEd ThEm In" I would like to point out that NMS frequently drops graphical quality when flying/driving (or even mining a deposit) and I've even been left stuck in the air because the surface wasn't loading in.

I like how Bethesda has taken ideas from various different games - their own and others - and adapted them into something that actually does feel new and fun, despite having a lot of familiarity. Skyrim skills and Fallout 4 perks have been merged in a way I really enjoy. Space combat feels like 3D, first-person FTL, or single-player Artemis Bridge Simulator. And so many similarities to No Man's Sky, in a great way - honestly, I feel like Starfield is Bethesda's response to the rough launch of No Man's Sky, leaving us now with two alternate, fun-for-different-reasons takes on the same idea. Hello Games took the original in one direction, Bethesda took their version in another, and now we get to play both.

I've seen a lot of people comparing it to No Man's Sky, but I think if people actually like NMS they'll probably like this too. It's similar but like you said takes it in a unique and interesting direction. The main drawback to NMS is the lacking a feeling of purpose and character immersion, and Starfield nails those things. There's things that NMS does better, but honestly most of them don't really fit this game. I recommend NMS to a lot of people once they made it fun, it's an astounding accomplishment for an indie game to include the physics and scale that it does but it took a lot of time to get to the point where there was actually anything to do in it. Starfield is chock full of content on day one. Obviously it should be for the price they're asking, but it's like comparing apples and oranges. Frankly after cyberpunk I'm just glad they bothered to finish starfield before rushing it out. I have a feeling that outposts would be a bit more fleshed out if they didn't push release forward to compete with bauldurs gate. Considering these games will likely be selling for the next decade at minimum it seems foolish to rush them out sooner than planned just to "maximise" their release buzz. In this case I don't think it hurt the game but more often than not it does.

Still haven't hit NG+ at 200+ hours and still enjoying myself. I got the "boots on the ground" achievement for setting foot on over 100 planets. While dynamic dungeons do repeat it tends to be rare to get the EXACT same layout (excluding caves). Even then I'd say I've found structurally identical bases maybe a dozen times. My head cannon is since they're mostly outposts from the colony wars and military doesn't vary design too much IRL it just works. I've noticed the random decorative lootable junk generation can change in some rooms even if the place looks the same structurally. I spent a good 20+ hours hitting up purely military bases even. My favorite is the ship modification facility it tends to have about 3 mini bosses and one real big boss with a very open outdoors layout.

Also Both spacers and crimson fleet have direct orders to occupy and exploit any and all abandoned outposts they find, so they even have that angle covered with notes in game. @hengineer as someone with 25 years as an electrician the complaining of reused structural assets is pretty laughable in general. Just look around any metro area for reused assets. Especially when you look at areas constructed in the same 10 or so year period.
@SineN0mine3
@SineN0mine3 9 ай бұрын
Considering most of these facilities were designed and built off world, it's incredibly likely that you'd see repeated layouts and modules everywhere. But yeah I'm getting annoyed at people saying the dungeons are all the same when some of the coolest stuff I've seen was in random generated dungeons. I know proc-gen is old hat now and the kids are all bored by it, but this implementation is taking it to a new level. I'm absolutely chuffed with the random outposts. I think people are landing on extremely hostile planets which tend to have fewer structures in general, or they're talking about caves (which sometimes sprawl for absolutely ages, but always feel a bit repetitive) or things like the abandoned listening post which are smaller structures and therefore have less potential for variations. I view those smaller locations as optional easy loot, it's nice to know that I'm not likely to spend 30 mins exploring the location sometimes. Caves are a bit more obvious, because they're supposed to be natural structures your brain keeps noticing repeating elements. I've seen cool stuff in caves, giant crystal structures, alien nests, whatever but you can't help but notice that they're built out of modules, so even when there's a lot of variation you don't feel as compelled to explore them. Fortunately the game often sends you into caves to rescue people or do a thing for a settlement so you never really need to explore them for the sake of exploring. My favourite thing is that the generated structures still have Bethesda's trademark environmental story telling. You can often uncover a horrible accident which caused the lab to be abandoned, or find signs of gradual decay. If you don't just blitz through every area looking for the loot chest, there's a lot of subtle details. I have some criticisms of this game like I'm sure most do, but the things that detractors seem to latch on to make it seem like they're playing a totally different game.

@@TacticalReaper56there's no way around the fact that flying ships or planes is a 3 dimensional activity. Most people aren't able to naturally translate from driving a car or boat on a two dimensional plane to having to consider a whole extra dimension. Not just "up and down" but now you're controlling pitch and yaw as well. You're definitely not going to be able to see in every direction. It really fries your brain the first time you do it, but there is no easy way to implement flight controls in a game, short of forcing the player onto rails. Every game that includes flying missions gets criticised for being too complicated or too simplistic and I think starfield has found a great balance. Some people probably won't enjoy flying no matter how you package it, but I think the ship combat in starfield is accessible and rewarding enough that people who normally wouldn't try it will be able to practice and master it over the course of a playthrough. I love being able to over spec your ship and shift power from shields and engines into weapons or whatever, it really feels like getting a tactical edge on your opponent.

I think the biggest issue I have with the game is how thin the content is spread, I believe Bethesda when they say that it has the most hand-crafted content out of every Bethesda game, but it's difficult to not feel a little frustrated when it's sprinkled over a thousand planets you have to slowly walk through without even a strong indication of where to find actually interesting things I still enjoy it, but I think it will be more of a platform for mods than a standalone game for me, even more so than Fallout 4 and Skyrim
@Fuar11

Even then that handcrafted content is large and detailed, but there's so little of it. You'll be walking for minutes on a planet between POIs only to see the exact same ones you saw on the last planet. There's little variation in the places you can find.

The general sentiment seems to be "the stuff that's hand-crafted is good" which I accept. However, if you can play the game wrong by doing unfun non-hand-crafted things, it does make me question why that portion exists in the first place. I don't think it's a bad game, but could it be a better one if it was smaller with more of a focus on hand-crafted content? Is there much that would be lost by reducing the scale?

Gonna be honest with you. My main enjoyment comes now from just hitting the dungeons and stuff around the map on my like 80th playthrough of a ES game, not the quests. Which is why they probably did this. They knew someone like me 5-10 years from now will have seen everything and just resort to doing that more than killing Alduin for the millionth time. Also they are 100 planets with hand crafted stuff, it's not like there's 2-3. Also it's got new game plus. In a RPG having to literally redo everything over and over is why I had to download like 40 new quest packs to keep it fresh, but this way at least I'll see new things without hitting Nexus, something console people don't have, ya know?

I gotta say that the intro to the game was a little slow imo, but once you did the first mission and got access to the ship it got more enjoyable. Once the game opens up it’s a total blast. The main story is kinda boring imo but the side quests and faction missions are incredible. No Vats - No Gore - No diving - Can't open Doors, defuse Mines, use Items... when in Scan Mode - Can't control jump height. NPCs can do that. A Charge up Meter is really needed on some Moons, or you fly off like a Rocket - Boost Packs not really suitable ever/meaning that you need different kinds of Boosters for different Situations but also you need Resistances against Korrosion, Air, Radiation, Bio, and somewhat level conforming Laser, EMP, Bullet Resistance = you need 12+ Boost Packs - Crafting and Building Copy Paste from FO4 but with worse placement control - Awful Controls overall. The game works on GamePad but you need your whole Keyboard if you choose to play on the Keyboard. Make ready to rebind 50 Keys and ignore Conflicts - Very few and lackluster Feats - You should start with level one on each Skill - Skills need to be way more "Exotic". ATM they are mostly "more DMG, can Craft, can buy, can fly - Item Feats are mostly useless and are Copy Paste from FO4 - Skill progression is mostly forgettable and unimaginative - EXP from discovering, Hacking, building, crafting is nearly not existent - Item Notifications gone after 1.5sec = can't check Stats = open Inventory - Carry Capacity sucks - You can't mark individual Items to look/track for - You can't undo all tracking Items - Inventory Menu sucks! StarUI Mod needed = modding mandatory or wasting hours unnecessarily - Can't use Cure Object in Affliction Screen. Again StarUI Mandatory - Not showing "Weather(Corrosion/Radiation...)" Conditions on Planet before landing- Map is awful - Quests send you to places you can't reach - Lifeless Planets are useless - Copy pasted Bases/Caves... no sign of prcedurally generated Locations - Often looking to Scan "Natural Wonder" that I already Scanned because it's not identifyable from the Picture - Planet Map shows 100% scanned even if it's not because of "Costal Area" - Escort Quests that have you travel 1000m+ for low reward - You can't ban Useless Items from Scanner - Rare/Legendary/Epic Items cause 2sec Game Freeze when Equiped and changing to Scanner or cyceling through Weapons - Space Combat at least unskilled at early Levels is pure Stats Game and often undoable because 3v1 - No feeling of actually flying through Space - You still get Stuck and can not jump when on angled Ground as in FO4/Skyrim/Oblivion... - NPC Money should be infinite or at least increased by 4x - Items you pick up/have in Inventory show the worth they have when you buy them from a Merchant, but they should show what they are worth to you, when you sell them - NPC standing on Pilot Seat so only 3rd Person Space Flight or piloting through gap between NPCs Legs - Enemies/Animals on Planet stacked in a Heap, so you think you will fight 3, but it ends up being 12 or more all stacked into one tiny Spot and into each other - Melee Combat as bad as it was in any other Bethesda Game (look what modders did to Skyrims Combat Animations) - Reloading gets Canceled by running and jumping - Typical Bethesda Bullet-Sponge Enemies - Typical run around/jump over Obsacles and slowly chip away their Health - In Ship flight you need to be able to make custom Presets for "Full Power Weapons, Grav Drive, Engines, Shields..." and bind them to F1-F4 or any other Key you choose - Needs City/Outpost/Other Listing on Star-Map to find the Locations + placement of own nameable Markers - Needs Button to stop Quests from coming in. I get 5 new Quests when running around doing one Quest. I don't know how I got the Quests. I don't know whom the Quests are from. I have no connection to them. - Finding Quests is a Nightmare. They need to be Structured much better. Time when Quest recieved/Location of Quest Giver/Near by Quests/Location of Quest/Radiant Quest... - Still can't go from Sneak to normal Mode whilst doing any other action / meaning Stealth play feels Crap. Sneak to someone with a Melee Weapon, hit them 1 time, wait for Animation to finish, press "Crouch" Key, wait for your Character to stand up, engage in Comabt. 1995... 19 F*cking 95!!! - I play the Game for 50h now and am Level 25 and still I find the same Fire Axe I found on Level 3 over and over 21 DMG - When on Map Screen, there has to be a Warning id you can not travel at this moment - I am SEETHING because I activated a Mission but the Game decided to not show me that Mission at all, but two other Missions I do not want to do - I decided to do one of the Missions to see what happens... I now got FOUR Map markers. WTF! And I am not allowed to activate even two Missions - Buy Back Disabled as soon as you leave Shopping Window - Can't pay debt from Dream Home Perk - Game does not tell you what Skills do until you unlocked the Line. That means that you can't work to a specific Skill and know it's effect - I managed to lock up the Menu by opening and closing it in quick succession. - Can't move after Loading-Screen, but the NPCs can - Crafting is a F*ing JOKE! You dump Skill points and Materials into upgrading but then you look at something like "You can now add a +5 Resistances Mod to Your Jump Pack". And that one costed me 2 Skill Points btw. No mention about that beforhand!

@@DarkShines86 Me too. I think the quests and stories are great but the exploration and random generation aspects are by far the most impressive and fun part of the game to me. In glad there aren't *more* planets, but I haven't been disappointed by picking random planets and landing on them. I've heard several complaints about them being repetitive and copy paste but I disagree strongly. I've seen at least a few dozen of the largest size dungeons and although the theme repeats (robotics lab, bio lab, weapons lab, etc) the layout, enemies and environmental story is completely different every time. The small dungeons and maps like civilian outposts or abandoned listening posts are usually almost identical, but that's good. You know you can quickly explore that location and get on with something else. Bethesda has done a great job of catering to their two main audiences: people who want to play every game and people who want to spend hundreds of hours in an RPG. Exploration, ship building and outposts are all things you could spend hours and hours doing but if you just want to get in to the story and play an adventure the game doesn't punish you at all, meaning you can do as much or as little of the side activities as you want. It's very difficult from a design perspective to include features like those without them seeming pointless or forcing everyone to use them and I think they've found a good compromise. Even compared to NMS I think the alien planets (meaning the ones with aliens on them) are fascinating and the alien plants and animals feel like they're really "out of this world".

57:56 I strongly disagree. In arcade games, when you unlock a double jump, it has a purpose; you will probably unlock a new map - Castlevania style. The game is designed this way for a purpose. In Starfield, it's as if we lack creativity for the skill tree, so let's just lock everything in the game behind a skill tree. Great that you mentioned the NV power armor perk; you get that perk by completing the Brotherhood questline, NOT through a perk tree. In Fallout 4, we have 3 perks that are basically essential (guns, armor, and tech gun mods), and they are used in part for settlement building. But here in Starfield, a lot of cool things are behind a perk: jetpack, pickpocket, sneak, crafting, outpost, scan a planet without 2/3 loading screens, drive a better ship, ship VATS, build a better ship (this doesn't make any sense; you go to an NPC ship builder and you need the MONEY and PERK. It's like going to a car mechanic and he says: 'No, to repair your car, it costs X, and I want to see your mechanic engineer certificate.'). Like you mentioned the jetpack in real life, I don't know how to use a firearm in real life, so applying the same rule, why should your character with a professor or diplomat background know? I think we should lock firearms/tech guns behind a perk tree too (just joking). A lot of these things could be items or unlocked in some other way. Scan a planet without 2/3 loading screens? Upgrade your ship's sensor. Jetpack perk? Hey, welcome aboard Constellation. Here, let me show you (tutorial) how to use basic things like a jetpack and so on. Want modded weapons/armors? Don't worry; we have an NPC shop that does that.

Agree with you guys wholeheartedly i'm close to 100 hours in and the game gets better and better as you learn it. Id say one thing I really hope they add DLC is a type of wasteland workshop type overhaul/addition for ship building and settlements. Settlements: Right now settlements don’t feel fully realized or worth getting into. They don’t offer anything that truly unlocks a new part of the game. They’re very half baked. Shipbuilding: The ship building is solid but it’s very hard to build anything sleek or highly aggressive looking. A lot of parts are very bulbous and round, a lot cockpits are hideous, making it hard to accomplish certain design languages. Additionally, you really can’t build WHATEVER you want. Capitol ships may potentially come (and maybe space stations too) but with the max crew size of 8 or whatever it’d be fruitless without it. Larger ships are definitely teased in loading screens alluding to 80m+ ships and “M-Class” parts already being in the game files.

I hugely prefer fantasy settings. I dabbled in Fallout 3 and 4 but I just didn't get sucked in the same as I did with Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. However, even though Starfield is Sci-Fi I do find myself drawn in to playing it. Plus, seeing the progress BGS has made makes me very hopeful for TES6

I've sunk about 120 hours in since early access, and I have to agree with what y'all said at the very end about DLC. This game feels like DLC can add so much to it, which is simultaneously exciting and disappointing. I'm 100% excited to see what content they have to share with us, especially House Va'Ruun and a specific thing from the very end of the main quest line that I won't spoil. However, it's a little disappointing how much some of this content feels like it's left out. At the end of the day, Starfield is still a complete game as is, and is quite a good one at that. I'd give it a solid 9/10 personally.

That's how I feel, there's disappointment, but it doesn't translate into hate for the game. I would give it an 8 or 9 out of ten, while not rooting for it for game of the year. I think they did great with the story, and that actually made me feel disappointed because there wasn't more of it with more twists and choices in it. If that makes sense, would have loved more Va'ruun and maybe more morally ambiguous companions so it doesn't feel like all "evil playthroughs" are isolated ones etc.

@@jimmythegamer2231 act 3 has a lot of content though and they didn’t put things into the game that really feel half baked. Literally EVERY part of starfield is half baked. FPS combat, ship building(even though best part, has a lot of glaring issues and missed QoL), ship combat is laughable, base building is trash. Then on top of it all, the main story game loop ruins everything. Idk if you have played Outer wilds. But just imagine that game, if it had these amazing side quests but then the main loop took forever to do and was super boring. It would ruin the game. Starfield feels like the main story should have been completely different OR it took 30 mins max to do each NG+ so we can go and have a meaningful game. Cause some of the side quests are pretty cool. It just lost meaning for me.

@@BGIANAKy What's wrong, don't like it when I shit on your "pReCiOuS 10/10 mAsTeRpIEcE" game? Your comment tells me one of two things: you either haven't finished Act 3 of BG3 and you haven't played much of Starfield, or you're a brainless husk of an individual that blindly follows whatever the internet decides is popular to praise/shit on. Both things are probably true about you. Imagine ignoring all the flaws in an objectively unfinished game and blindly shilling for it by saying "B-b-BuT iT Has A LoT A CoNtEnT!!1!!" Not only was Act 3 of BG3 full of bugs, performance issues, and glitches at launch, but the ending of the game itself is literally half-baked at best. So half-baked, in fact, that Larian is literally trying to fix the ending post-launch by actually trying to make it good. In addition, prior to release, Larian claimed that there would be 17,000+ different endings in BG3, but they lied, unless you count your character wearing a different cosmetic as a brand new ending. By that logic, games like RDR2 have thousands of endings as well lmao. There are also literally unfinished companion side quests in Act 3 of BG3 to this day, such as Minthara's. So claiming it isn't half-baked is a blatant lie. You know what else is half-baked in BG3? The progression system and the shitty RNG-based combat. One moment you're easily defeating the evil god of death in BG3 and the next you get beat up by some random bandit an hour later. Tf? The writing in BG3 is also shit compared to BG1 and BG2. Those games were serious and made the world of D&D feel lived in and full of political intrigue. The writing in BG3, meanwhile, feels like some Gen-Z-ified abomination. Here's how writing works in BG3: say something nice to someone, they will beg to have sex with you. Say something mean to someone, and they're your biggest enemy. Some shit, especially the romance scenes, feel like they were written by a 14-year-old teenage girl on Wattpad. At least the way romance works in Starfield is more realistic compared to BG3. Speaking of Starfield, it's not a perfect game at all, but it's a damn good game. Claiming that everything in the game is half-baked is a f*cking lie. The only thing half-baked in SF is the exploration, which is to be expected since it's a space game with fully explorable planets. Combat is the best of any BGS/Obsidian FPS RPG and the gunplay actually feels pretty good. Spaceship combat's only bad if you use the same trash ship you get at the start of the game, never upgrade it, and never level up your spaceship skills. There is literally no other game out there with ship building as good as Starfield's, so claiming it has tons of glaring issues is a f*cking joke. Could it be improved? Sure. If you could see the interiors of the ships, that would be nice, but that aside, everything else is pretty damn great when it comes to ship building. The resetting of planets in Outer Worlds is not not new game plus, it's part of the gameplay loop. Comparing that with Starfield's new game plus makes no sense. Besides, NG+ is one of the best and more creative parts of the game in Starfield. So let's wrap things up by using your logic here. Starfield has 100+ hours of quality side quests and content in it (which is true). That automatically makes it perfect and any criticism of it is invalid. The end. Now go ahead. Call me a Bethesda shill, a BGS d*ck-sucker, a fanboy, whatever makes you feel better about me speaking the truth.

So far for me, at least I would say if you have the perk points to spare, it's worth putting a few points in. @deimos5579
@deimos5579 8 ай бұрын
I invested into weapon crafting. For me it is worth it because there are some mods which can increase the damage output but also add other features to the guns like armor penetration or there is the recon scope with some kind of limited x-ray ability. All automatic rifles can also be changed to semi automatic which is my prefered fire mode because it wastes less bullets and increases damage output per shot. Of course there are lot of guns in the game which already have those mods but those are randomized and once you have a legendary weapon you might want to use weapon crafting to adjust it to your preferences.

"The cool stuff is on the planets"... Sure, it's filled with so much cool stuff on planets that most planets lack life. The planets that contain life only have about 3 - 4 different creatures and a few mostly useless or boring locations to discover. Abandoned bases/mines typically have bandits. At first, it felt good to explore these abandoned areas. It got repetitive quickly because it's the same thing. No surprise encounters with fearsome ground shaking alien creatures, or extremely difficult bandit lords etc. Additionally, I encountered bugs that were prevalent in Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 - 4. You mean to say Bethesda still can't fix these bugs since Oblivion? The same janky animations and awkward NPC stares exist here too. It's embarrassing that modders can make mods that have far better animations to combat than Bethesda. I remember a mod for Skyrim that made the combat extremely fun and far better animated than the vanilla stuff. Starfield is not a bad game. It's just an average game in its current state. In some ways, it felt bare-bones like how No Man's Sky was when it first released.

One of my gameplay critiques has to be the lack of consideration for melee and unarmed characters. 4/5ths of the melee weapons are knives, with one axe, one wakizashi/short sword, and one cleaver in the form of the Va'ruun Painblade. No unarmed weapons, no non-lethal/EM melee weapons like an EM Baton or shock prod. No knuckle duster upgrades for your suit, no knuckles or gauntlets to use, it almost makes unarmed combat seem like a useless afterthought if not for the three perks in the physical tree that directly upgrade it and require it to be upgraded. I also feel like Vasco should have been modifiable, with different upgrades available for higher-tiers of various perks related to weapon, armor, and outpost research. And on a final note, there's a quest in Neon where you squeeze a local hoodlum for a weapon shop vendor so he can clean off the spray paint the hoodlum vandalized his robot with, but after completing that quest, regardless of how, the robot doesn't get swapped for a cleaned-up version even if you leave for several days and come back. The dialogue implies that the money was used to clean, maintain, upgrade, and polish the robot, but he's permanently spray-painted to look like a modern art piece.

My only "complaint" is every Starfield video being full of comments about mods. Instead of fair criticism, its "oh, mods will fix that" or "cant wait for the mod that adds X". Its basically incentivising Bethesda to half ass TES6 becuase they are picking up thay the community wont care because modders will finish the job and make the game whatever they wanted anyways. Instead of a thoughtful, meaninful game that they want to make and complete, we will get a half ass sand box for the community to fix.

That's the nature of fanboys, and these two sure are passionate to the point of stupidity, in their eyes BethesdaGS can do no wrong, they're so desperate they can't help but view them with rose-tinted glasses. The fact that they entirely stopped making TES content completely in favour of Starfield shows how fanboyish they are. 55 hours in, and if I had to choose to either give a thumbs up or thumbs down for Starfield, I would initially choose to give thumbs down. No doubt I will sink hundreds of hours into this game and enjoy it thoroughly, but there are some glaring issues that are difficult to ignore. Firstly, you mention how the questlines are "good" and I have to say that maybe you didn't think too hard about them, because the choices you are given are utterly inconsequential. Starfield cares more about giving you the illusion of choice than actually giving you a heavy moral dillema to parse out. One of the choices in the UC questline literally looks like: "Hey you, random guy we just met 5 minutes ago, can you tell us how we should get rid of all the terrormorphs? It makes no sense for us to ask you, but your choice will literally make no difference to the story/world at all anyway." They make you decide, but your choice means nothing. It's the illusion of choice to bolster the claim that this is a true RPG with player choice. Spoilers here: Both the UC and Ranger questlines can boil down to meeting some important dude who is secretly the bad guy causing all the problems, finding out 4 missions later that they are indeed the bad guy and now you get to decide to kill them or not. It's the same, lazy plot for the two biggest factions. But at least you get a choice, right? Well, the choice doesn't affect the outcome of the faction quest lines AT ALL. They end the same no matter which choice you make, rendering the choice almost pointless. All-in-all, I really wish games would choose to either give the player meaningful choices, or focus on constructing a competent railroaded narrative. Give me choice so I can roleplay, or give me a damn good story. Stop trying to give players both choices and a consequential ending while delivering neither. Now, I will probably revise my rating of the game once mod support gets released and modding comes into full swing, because I believe Starfield will gain much more content and love from the modding community that will make it a truly great game.

I would give a thumbs up, but basically the same take. It's a good game, but not if you like the RPG and depth over shallow branching most. They tell the story; you ride the story wave. You can surf it, swim it, or get swept up in it, but ultimately it is a wave you have no choice about. You'll never get to say (....................spoilers ahead......................) side with the anti-board of Governers military guy, do bad things as a constellation member with constellation members because they all disapprove of "negative choices," SLOWLY work through a rank to actually earn experience where the UC should want your input, or have different quest lines acknowledge each other. Bethesda just doesn't do that. So, I like this game for what it is. But what it is is NOT the RPG I wanted. Larian gave me that actually, which I think lowered my experience of Starfield considerably if I'm being honest.

@leontes

@@AxethatGuy They shouldn't have to, but Bethesda has realized that allowing free access to modding tools will create a strong modding community, which lengthens the "lifespan" of a game drastically due to the sheer amount of content the large community then produces. That means Bethesda designs their games with mods in mind, making them an eventual feature that will influence my review and feelings about the game.
@AxethatGuy

I do recognise your point. Let me rephrase the question. Why should modders fix what should never have been broken. I'm basically saying every new instalment seems to be half baked. And for a game to be what 7 years correct me if I'm wrong in development and this is what is produced. No game is 100% perfect but they should be at least 90 to 95% bug free since it had such a long development time. And yet modders are already fixing and solving problems days after release. Do they get paid by Bethesda.. I think if they make a highly desired mod and the modder wants to paywall it I'm fine with that.
