If we can save the franchise I want in so i can retcon one of Stargate's dumbest plot points: The Ascended. Seriously Stargate went from a series heavily rooted in awesome sci-fi ideas and concepts to focusing too hard on pushing New Ageism ideas like becoming gods and "ascending to a higher plane of existence." I always hated that part of the series personally, and I've always wanted to change it

@@frick_____you I guess you’re right. I guess what I hate is less the *idea* of the Ascended and more what they were *used for.* They kinda went too serious with the Ascended, trying to say “this is a real thing that YOU can achieve!” And it came off as out of place, especially when Stargate was actually (in my opinion) the only series to make the idea of Ancient Aliens not seem stupid! I do think The Ascended should have been the final bosses of Stargate, which would have been a lot more interesting to see imo. It would lead to a great season finale stinger where they decipher an Ancient message and discover it’s a warning that says: “Do not trust The Ascended. They are not who they say they are.“

It’s interesting that two Dean Devlin/Roland Emmerich movie projects, despite not being good films, have spawned into TV shows and such that ended up more successful than the movies they spun off from. Not only had Stargate spun off into a massive franchise, but Devlin and Emmerich’s Godzilla film got a Fox Kids cartoon that was much closer to what fans expected from a Godzilla series. It’s ironic that those two tried and failed to do that with Independence Day.
@calebmarmon1310

If only they tried to do an Independence Day tv show. In a decade, you’d have to explain to everyone under 20 that it’s a spin-off and the original was a big deal in the before-times.
@TitaniaBird
@TitaniaBird 2 жыл бұрын
And even stranger, I would argue that Stargate is actually the best Roland Emmerich film. Sure, it's cringe with all the "Ancient Aliens" stuff that the show tried to kind of fix by making sure the "Ancient Aliens" didn't just affect non-white cultures, but I think it's better than Independence Day, which I find pretty fun in its own right. Everything thereafter is a slide into awfulness and fading relevance. He got it right the first (two) times, and then just kept trying to chase the rabbit, only to get stuck in the rabbit hole.
@mightyfilm
@mightyfilm 2 жыл бұрын
Doesn't help much that whoever did the Godzilla cartoon far outclassed both of them in talent. I don't think we would have needed an Independence Day cartoon. We got one based on the better Will Smith Sci-Fi movie and even then, that cartoon outclassed its movies sequel, even though that movie came out after the series ended.

Yeah while it’s hard to pit The Clone Wars against Stargate during the period they overlapped, Stargate was a very healthy contender against Enterprise, but late DS9 was pretty strong for SG-1’s opening stretch. The simultaneous SG-1/Atlantis era definitely overpowers Enterprise’s final season (Atlantis premiered July ‘04). By the time Star Wars continually has a TV presence (gotta throw in the Lego stuff for a good spread), Trek is long absent, Stargate freshly so

It was aimed at a much younger audience about a team of young cadets and there older commanding officer who during an attack by a force called the Tla-Kahn had to jump through a Star Gate set to random to escape. Now the group is lost in the Galaxy trying to find other Star Gates hoping the planet they end up on next is Earth. All while being hunted by the Tla-Kahn. While I never watched any Stargate, I have seen constant commercials for SG-1. As such, for the longest time, I thought that was the only Stargate thing. Years later I found out about the rest of it and was surprised. This may be weird but something about the name of this show just sounds so cool and has gravitas: SG-1, something about the combination of the letters and numbers, much like Star Trek Deep Space Nine and its DS9 acronym.

If you ever decide to watch SG-1, I'd suggest watching season 2 or 3 first, maybe start with the last multiparter of season 1. Season one is...well it's kind of rough to get through and should only really be watched when you're invested in the show. Just like any Star Trek series actually.
@Jokie155

Season 1 has some fundamental episodes though that I think are worth watching in isolation if nothing else. Thor's Hammer and Torment of Tantalus both set up the single biggest plotline throughout the show's run for example. And the build-up to the S1 finale is both gripping and chilling in showing just how slanted the stakes are against Earth.
@mikegates8993

@@Jokie155 I agree, but season one is still on the whole an acquired taste. I meant more that season 1 is not indicative of the quality of the rest of the series and starting on the later stuff might help new people get hocked, maybe skipping around season 1 for the important ones.

@@mikegates8993 Yeah, plus it was clear that they were kind of doing catch up with Star Trek TNG and DS9. Plus some of the content in season 1 felt really out place not just with the tone of season1 but the entire series in general. Especially with that full frontal nudity scene in the pilot that felt (for the lack of a better) very rapey, something the franchise in general never did. TBF though, the creators said that they were forced to add that scene and the directors cut shortened that scene and removed the nudity.

01:10 I do think the comparison with Rome has the "issue" that we tend to have far better actual sources about Rome than about the fourth Dynasty and before, the fourth Dynasty being the one of Khufu/Cheops and his father Sneferu, who built the Pyramids at Giza. Meanwhile outside of Greece and Rome, aside of stuff like Stonehenge (which, for the most part, just isn't really visually impressive enough to wonder "How did they do that?!") in Europe there weren't many epc buildings until well into the first century BC or even far further into the ADs. So, for Europe, there just isn't that much prehistoric material to go "ALIENS DID IT!", aside of, as before, Stonehenge and such, who do attract some theories. And between the Cheops Pyramid and the Colosseum are around 2600 years, that has to be kept in mind. We, today, are closer to Cleopatra VII. Philopator and the building of the Colosseum, then either were to the building of the great Pyramids. While racism most likely plays a role, the reason for why we don't have nearly as much humbug about the Colosseum and co. is probably mainly that we have a much better picture of 1st Century Rome than of 26th century BC Egypt. Although that isn't the only fringe Theory about the Sphinx (and the Pyramids)... there is also the one where they are actually like... 2,000 to 8,000 years older and where they were built by a civilization nobody ever found evidence to have even existed. 23:30 and the support of the French, Spanish and Dutch, and a prussian officer whipping the Continental Army into shape.

Regarding the recapping to other characters: One thing I really liked about _Stargate Universe_ was a series of recordings Daniel Jackson made explaining the _Stargate_ series' backstory and relevant lore. As time went by, people in-universe would learn about the Stargate, and they'd have to have these things explained to them. I guess the people doing the explaining got so tired of going through that song and dance over and over again, that they decided to just make some recordings of Daniel laying it all out, and then handing those out to people instead of taking the time to sit down and give exposition themselves.

Sounds like the foundation for a Kingdom Hearts sequel. And I can't tell if it would be weirder then what we've already seen from that series or not.

To me personally, the best thing about Stargate is its worldbuilding. They do an excellent job of creating explanations for how 21st-century Earth can stand up to and eventually surpass FTL aliens, and make that progression feel natural and earned rather than a "[Earth] humans are just better at stuff" vibe.

I think the best thing about Stargate is Christopher Judge's ability to completely deadpan everything as Teal'c. Also the single episode "Window of Opportunity". (I have simple pleasures.)

Man, you had me rolling iwth the Big Giant Hammond Head jokes. It's been a couple of years since my last watch-through of the series, but I loved the shout-outs. And yep, gotta imagine the Aschen would've had a really bad day when they eventually decided to dial up P3W-451 (and if they managed to survive that, the list they got from SG-1 gets progressively darker after that).

I remember discovering SG1 during the 5th season while randomly flicking through tv channels looking for something to watch and seeing John De Lancie, being a big fan of Q from Star Trek I gave the show a watch and was intrigued. I looked into it some more after that and was quickly hooked, Stargate becoming my favourite of the “Star” franchises. For years I watched it almost religiously with my dad and just a couple weeks I even introduced my mom to it and have been rewatching it from the very beginning.

To be fair, the Roman Colosseum was both closer to us than to the pyramids in terms of when it was built (seriously, it is hard to wrap your head around how ancient the pyramids are), giving humanity more time to up its game, and also much less spectacular. But yeah, the whole ancient aliens nonsense is predicated on the idea that ancient people didn't know how to do math, basically.

After watching your review of this comic, I have since become an instant fan of Stargate Linkara! I should point out that another star titled show called Starhunter, which was a Canadian produced live-action Cowboy Bebop from 2000, was produced with ancient aliens involved with the plot, although it was canned after 2 seasons. All of it had to do with studio interference, much like another Canadian produced Star show, the 1973 Harlan Ellison penned, Starlost tv series which starred 2001: A Space Odyssey's Keir Duella and guest starred John Callicos, Terry Morse, and Percy Rodrigez, was canned and tampered with by studio interference.

23:47 If you want to be REAL technical, there is the story of the Captain John Paul Jones, an American Naval Officer who sailed to England and attacked various ships off their shoreline, even capturing some before returning to the safety of the Colonies. I do not think that is what the writer meant by that though, it's probably a poor choice of words detailing how American Rebels went on the Offensive. But there you go.

I had no idea it was a movie. As a kid, I watched SG1 and Atlantis on TV before school with my Dad. Pretty fond memories too. Just chilling with my Dad watching sci fi while I get ready for the day. I'm from Manitoba and we had a channel specifically called "Space" so they aired it there. Weird that the series were on back to back at 6 and 7am, but I just googled the initial release and end dates so it seems I was watching reruns.

Not having an inker can work. For example, Marvel 1602 (which, when I go to your Patreon, I'm going to request), didn't have an inker, but the colored pencil sketches made the comic look like wood cuts. This, I think, helped the Elizabethan aesthetic come through.
