From The Episode "A Matter Of Time"
Description From IMDB - SG10 are on a planet when one of the binary stars becomes a black hole. They try to escape by dialing Earth, but fail to get back. The SGC sends a probe and sees the black hole, but then they find they cannot disengage the wormhole and the gravitational effects are starting to effect Earth.

@@Revkor I had only read the synopsis of the novel, but from our perspective time has all but stopped for SG-10. They rescued them by SG-1 acquiring a space ship which is completely resistant to the effects of the black hole, so they fly there to the planet, right to the stargate. Sg-10 seeing this, got nothing tho loose, they ran immidiately to the ship. All but one of the them is rescued and returned home safely. Overall, while for them it was only minutes, Sg-10 was trapped for 5 years. It wasn't easy for them, or their families but they menaged to get back things on track. In later seasons of Sg-1, Sg-10 is mentioned two or three times, being on a mission or something like that.

Fun Fact: During the whole episode, SG-10 was sitting on the other side wondering why the gate closed a split second after activating. They were later (5 years RL time) saved by Carter who piloted a modified Tel'Tak that could withstand the time dilation effectes. Sadly, there was one casualty though. Lt Reed was incinerated when during evac, the gate opened again a stream of solar plasma came rushing out. It originated from the same star that Carter blew up to destroy Apophis' fleet. ^^

The horrifying thing about falling into a black hole is that he'll spend all of eternity dying. Before spaghettification can render him unconscious and long before he can asphyxiate, time will begin speeding up from his perspective as he falls down the gravity well. Stars will be born and die before his eyes, whole galaxies will spin themselves to death, and the last few dim lights of the final red stars will wink out, leaving blackness like no living thing has ever experienced. Only then, at the end of time, will he finally know death.

there would not have been an increase in these effects to begin with. the star just turned into a black hole. it did not suddenly increase several magnitudes in mass. Nope, he wasn't. SG-1 got their hands on a Tel'tak shielded against time dilation and mounted a rescue mission; by that time, the planet was inside the black hole's event horizon and time dilation was so severe that Cromwell hasn't arrived yet. Problem is, this was the same planet Carter used to blow up that star back in the day and SG-10 was only alive because the plasma from that star hasn't arrived yet due to time dilation; when it finally did, it incinerated the entire planet and killed one of the members of SG-10 who didn't get inside the ship in time. The whole mission took five months in real time. If Cromwell ever comes out of the gate, he'll end up in a ball of stellar plasma inside the black hole's event horizon and get incinerated into ash in hyper slow motion. He's as dead as he can get.

Later in the series, when they had access to ships with hyperdrive and beaming technology, why didn't they jump to the planet and rescue the marooned team members? It would take only relative moments to jump in, beam them up, and jump away, the time dilation differential to Earth would be negligible, and from the perspective of the rescued personnel, only moments would have passed since the initial creation of the black hole. What happened to not leaving people behind? Tsk, tsk, SG1!

Someone must make a montage of all the moment the Stargate refused to close when it is critical. Seriously, I know it's fiction, but the idea of designing a device that have the potential of destroying the planet if misconnected, without a killswitch is silly. In fact it would have been fun to see the SGC learning to use the Stargate as it is a complex system through seasons. A bit like Atlantis with the city. Like discovering the killswitch, the iris, diagnosis, etc.. Would had show how amazingly designed the Stargate system is. Because here it feels clusmy without any security standards.

imo an iris cant act like a seal, because black holes are not sinks, theyre singularities, imagine a planet or star, compressed into an infinitely small space, and as a result it creates enormous gravity waves, that is a black hole. the reason it looks like a "hole" is because all matter and light red shifts just before the event horizon, its not you can get swallowed up by a black hole, its just that you can no longer be observed within it. also for teal'c to be able to pull that cable at all is a godly feat, since the cable's momentum is distorted by space time any pulling force teal'c would be doing should only stretch the cable, not actually pull jack up.

@@jezeski2011 Did you pay attention to MY comment before replying? Clearly you didn't. The person you replied to was making fun of "Admiral Titan Entertainment" because in the description of this video, THEY forgot the second 't' in Atlantis. Hence why i said "look in the description" and quoted their mistake. You obviously have trouble with reading comprehension because you should have realized that EsquilaxM commenting "The rights to Stargate Atlanis are held by MGM" makes no logical sense, even without the typo. For me it was very obvious that they must have been referencing something so i checked the description and it all made sense. Please use your brain before replying, Chris.

Wow this was inaccurate. Iris or no iris there would've been the same amount of gravity either way. Treating gravity as it was wind is one of greatest scifi bs I have ever seen :)
@Scottx125Productions
@Scottx125Productions 5 жыл бұрын
Can't really claim it is inaccurate as this is complete BS because it's a TV show based in fiction. Plus how are we to know how in lore the gravity of a black hole is effected by a device that travels outside our dimension and acts as a portal? Or even how matter or energy reintegrates on the other side with an Iris there? You're claiming inaccuracy when in reality in this specific situation regarding a TV series and a fantasy device, there is no real answer.
@MrPobanz
@MrPobanz 5 жыл бұрын
But the Iris thing was forgivable since the rest of the episode was believable. Also, i can turn a blind eye on the Iris one because it makes sense closing it nonetheless, just to prevent everything from falling into the stargate prior to its destruction.

@karhedin
@karhedin 5 жыл бұрын
@@Jah_Coby the closed iris prevented the air to be sucked into the gate. when the iris collapsed the air suddenly got sucked creating first a blast of wind (as air pressure was increasing up to that moment) then a weaker but constant wind pushing them toward the gate.

You didn't watch the episode properly did you? The Stargate was creating a lensing effect that dampened the effects of the blackhole while creating a gradient vector field that extended from the Stargate. As Sam Carter stated, they were witnessing something that the laws of physics dictate that shouldn't be possible normally but it was possible through a random convergence of technology working in a way that it never has before. That and I suspect that the Ancients created multiple redundancies and safeties to keep the incoming/outgoing travelers safe...and I suspect it was those numerous safeties on the Stargate that was keeping the worst of the Blackhole's gravity in check.

This was a cool episode but a huge amount of the science in it was wrong. We have made quite a lot of progress on the science of black holes in the last decade though so I can forgive SG-1 it's transgressions. Not to mention it's sci-fi. When has sci-fi ever been super realistic?

Well, it is Sci Fi - ultimately Fiction written in the frame of Science.... Science flavored fiction, for the sake of Drama. Does it matter if the hero defeats the dragon with his magic sword or defeats the aliens with his powerful battle cruiser, if he still 'gets the girl' ? This episode is a good balance of even when you 'win' it comes at a cost, terrible loss and success at the same time. Good Drama writing. I felt the worst for the guys running towards the gate - literally out of time to even get to it and dial back home to safety.

I just watched this rerun on Comet TV. First time seeing it. Finished minutes ago. WTF?! So the former teammate who left Jack behind previously sacrifices himself to save Jack--and the whole damn world---and not even a brief acknowledgment? The Major says they "All" survived. No, they didn't. They lost someone, and not even a freaking mentionof it? W T actual F?! All it would have taken was a one line response of "Not quite all of us." Yes, it's a good episode, and a great premise, but that omission bothers me.
