An ex coworker of mine actually lost his job because his shift ended and while off the clock he went looking for a suspect that he was after throughout his day. Unfortunately he found him and held him until cops showed up. 2 weeks later they fired him because the police station was getting sued for what he did. No I'm not a cop but he was, this is just his story to me.

I think is the concept as when you're a medical doctor for example and faced with a situation where someone needs medical attention in a public place e.g. mall, and you're the only person who can help them while awaiting paramedics. You can't say I'm off duty while a person's life is in danger, however, you need to identify yourself and ask them if you can assist (get a consent).

The way I see with that concept is like if I were about to get surgery done and the scheduled doctor has to clock out and go home because his shift is already over. Exactly there's a lot of cops who think because they are a cop they are above everyone such as taking people out of their car and beating them.. It is called felony murder. Someone died while he was committing a felony. Cop or not. Felony murder is usually a capital offense, making it eligible for the death penalty. Anyone committing the felony with him would also be charged with the murder. If the cop had killed an accomplice he would still be charged with felony murder. It doesn't matter if it is your crime partner.
