Starlit Citadel Reviews Battlestar Galactica, with Kaja Sadowski and Joanna Gaskell. In Battlestar Galactica, players must work together as members of the Galactica's crew to bring their battered ship and its fleet to the planet Kobol in one piece. Their task is made even harder by the fact that one or more team members may be a robot Cylon in disguise, trying to prevent the humans from reaching their destination. The game plays in 2 to 3 hours and supports 3 to 6 players.

I usually write the scripts for the gameplay descriptions a week or so before the shoot, to give Joanna and I time to memorize them. We film with two cameras simultaneously (the close and wide shots), with our videographer, Rob Hunt, running both, and usually shoot the component stills the same day as the "talking heads" bit of the video. More gameplay footage is filmed and added on a later day. Our shooting time per video runs about 1 hour, with post-production taking considerably longer.

I didn't actually play many game growing up, but my parents always included me in their other hobbies (rock climbing, in particular), and I got sucked in naturally by seeing how much fun they were having doing what they enjoyed. They also encouraged me to read, be curious about the world around me, and pursue whatever my own interests were, and that led me to boardgames in my own time.

Sorry to have missed your comment earlier. I've only played with the Pegasus expansion, and love the addition of the second ship and its airlock, but have mixed feelings on the New Caprica endgame. It's fun once, but makes for a very repetitive experience if played too often, as it forces all of the players into very narrow roles and strategies. Pegasus, on the other hand, adds player executions to the mix, and really dials up the politics and intrigue, which is my favorite part of the game.

Yes, we do. I (Kaja) write the gameplay descriptions of our reviews, and both Joanna and I play the games in order to be able to give relevant feedback at the end of the videos. We're both also active gamers outside of the reviews, and Joanna's other job is a rpg-themed webseries called Standard Action, while I manage an online boardgame store.

This is a great review! Obviously this game has a LOT of intricate mechanisms, but you two did a wonderful job of keeping the review moving by focusing on theme and actions in the game rather than specific rules.

To date this is still my favourite board game. I've recently picked up the exodus expansion, and am amazed how much they managed to change a board game, mostly through use of the Cylon fleet optional rule. I've also not had the chance to use the Ionian Nebula optional rules. I'm wondering if you have a preferred combination of expansions and optional rules. I'm also interested in your opinions on the strength and weaknesses of the different parts of the expansions.

It's already in production! We're filming tomorrow, and you should see it go live in the next 1-2 months (we have a bit of a backlog at the moment).

The next four you'll see go up are Game of Thrones: The Boardgame, Dungeon Petz, Ascension, and Claustrophobia. They're all filmed, and are in post-production currently.

Thanks! We've had a couple requests for Battles of Westeros, so it looks like we'll have to sneak it into the queue somewhere. The Game of Thrones LCG is also on our list of games to review, so you can expect to see those in a while. We've also just finished one of the Game of Thrones boardgame, which should be airing next week.

Fast, precise and relevant.. SUPER review :) .. i love the quality of the camera, the sound on both of you and your style! This is really one of the better games, i will try it with a new group but i had the feeling myself that its too complicated for new gamers :) time will tell.. Please make a lot more, dont be affraid to make it last 30 min if it gives a deeper understanding of the rules in a game - i for one love to hear the rules from fellow gamers than to read them myself :)

It would be really nice to see an updated review to include the expansions. In my opinion, the New Caprica rules are never used, but the Pegasus board is always used. The Exodus expansion is great in that the Cylon fleet board is really a great way to run ship combat (although we tend to include the 'scar' card in the deck for flavor). The Ionian Nebula rules are more complex, though I do like the ally cards a lot. It would be nice to hear your take on these rules.

Lovely video for an awesome game. I LOVED the series, and the game precisely replicates Season 1, without any spoilers for players who haven't yet seen it. I'd say the play time for my group is more like 3-4 hours... You have to add in wrangling/arguing time, while each player tries to convince the others that they aren't cylons... I'm guessing from Kaja's smile that she doesn't mind traitor games too much! ;) Thanks to you both again, X

The Pegasus game board weapon locations feel really overpowered on its own, the pilots go from being rather important to a little weak, however, after the addition of the Cylon fleet game board from the Exodus expansion pilots become incredibly important again, and rebalances the Pegasus very nicely. It also adds in a lot of tension that wasn't there before, Jumping is no longer the solution it used to be.

Interesting. And well done review! I'll have to keep my eyes open at cons/local games stores and try to get in on a demo of the game. Thanks for the great info!

As for the Pegasus game board, I really like it. While I find the airlock is often neglected due to the games paranoia (Am I /really/ sure this is the cylon?), it provides a nice little option for when you are sure. Similarly the Engine room is frequently underused, because it's ability is so unlikely to matter, so many of the cards have Jump Track symbols on them as it is. However, it's great for dealing with those lulls in the action.

Absolutely! My parents played lots of games games with me - 2-players, and big group games when extended family was over. They were a really positive experience - not just because it was fun for me, but also because I could see it was fun for them. Granted, those were mostly what elitist gamers call "Ameri-trash" games - Crib, Sorry, Trivial Pursuit... but I didn't care, it was the act of getting together and playing that mattered to me. That definitely set me up to enjoy games later in life. :)

I find the New Caprica endgame to be pretty unbalanced, it seems the best way for the cylons to win is to make sure that one of them is the admiral, and be as helpful as possible for the majority of the game, then take off before the civilian ships leave the planet. This tactic got so used by my group of players that we have ended up not playing it again.

This game is extremely hard for the humans to win. I played with 4 people and we got lucky and figured out the Cylon on his 1st turn. He died and came back on the Cylon ship. We all thought the humans going to win finally!!! The Cylon wasn't going to be able to take us down from within anymore...well guess what. Humans still lost! It's like what the heck? This game was so frusting made so that the humans can barely win, even if the Cylon is shown on the 1st turn. Humans may never win. WTF!

Hi girls, Id just like to know a bit of background if you wouldnt mind indulging me. I have a young daughter and im desperate for her to grow up with a passion for things that I enjoy doing, like boardgames and such. What made you girls get into being gamers in the first place, what kind of environment made you predisposed to it and did it have anything to do with your parents?
