You are in the minority. Most Britons want someone they can go to the pub and make un-PC jokes with. See the repeated success Boris and Nige have had over the last couple decades. We are only choosing someone boring now because we have suddenly woken up the day after with a cracking hangover and wondering how on earth we could have been so stupid to go along with those idiots. Of course, we are the ones left with the consequences, they are talking about what a great laugh they had. But don’t worry, once the adults in the room cleaned up our vomit and nursed us back to health we will go on and vote for the fun idiots all over again. We can’t help it.

Massive win for Starmer. He was far more animated than usual and did the right thing by insisting he wouldn’t make any promises he couldn’t guarantee to keep. Disappointing for Labour supporters to hear him so determinedly centrist but absolutely the right tactic in terms of outflanking Sunak, who was pretty terrible. Obviously nobody in the audience was buying the idea that they should ignore the chaos of the pre-Sunak Tory years.

Centrist politics is what is needed for sure. Breeds the right kind of politician where compromise between two polar opposites wins. It seems to me that there are blips along the way from the electorate who “want something different” but then that shows the party extremities for what they are. Totally understand centrist compromise means many don’t get want they want most of the time, but it does mean public service and the rest of our taxes are spent in the right way for the majority.

I think everyone actually knows the country is in a deep economic mess left by the Tories and there really isn’t any money this time. That’s part of the reason for the apathy because there isn’t a magical or radical way out of the mess they’ve left us in, just basically the Government doing what it can to energise the economy and try and kick start it out of its cycle of stagnation and declining GDP per capita. The biggest one will be the NHS. If people feel the NHs has turned the corner back towards the service we remember under the last Labour Government then I think labour will cruise to victory at the 28/29 election too.

We pay too much tax for those under £150k anyways. 20% income tax on someone earning the average wage is absurd. Tax thresholds need to go up, we need people to have dispoable income, we need people to spend more money on local businesses such as restaurants, the arts, cinemas, pubs but people don't have cash to do it.
@joshrogers7816
@joshrogers7816 12 күн бұрын
Ah, but if you pay less tax you can choose what to spend it on. Like private health care because of the long queues, private dental care because there's no NHS dentist in your area, like private schools because your state school is a. falling down, 2. overcrowded classrooms, 3. not enough teachers, like increased car insurance because your car's tyres keep being shredded because of the potholes. And of course you'll pay far more for the privilege because all these private options are businesses that are out to make a profit so they can give more money to the Tory party and get more concessions and handouts from the public purse.

It's amazing to see really, because instances like this highlight just how much he's completely misread how much the country hate his party... For the last 18 months he's been blabbering lines that the data team have "cleared" as being what "the people" want, and only once he called the elction could he see it was a total pack of nonsense. In his speeches you can hear the same people that spoke when Liz Truss opened her mouth, think tanks. i cannot think of a single thing Sunak has said since being PM that has an ounce of authenticity to it.

I think it’s deeper than that. He (and all his cronies) have gone through life completely convinced of their own superiority. Turns out, and the evidence is all around, that he (and all his cronies) are utterly incompetent and have probably not much more than average intelligence at best. Their privilege has not only shielded them from this truth but supplanted it with unshakable self-belief. Now he has the average Joe mocking him, people he looked down upon can validly deride him. A McDonald’s branch manager is probably more competent. The whole country is either pointing and laughing or too disgusted to meet him in the eye. His sense of self from which all that arrogant confidence drew upon has been utterly shattered. And very publicly too. That’s an incredibly deep psychological wound to process, let alone recover from.

Much better format than ITV debate, they should be answering voters rather than fight each other in W’minster bubble. Sunak looks beaten. Starmer was v reassuring & great when media allows a bit of time for nuances, eg liked his answer on nationalising energy £10bn cost. He may not be v charismatic but think he’ll be excellent at governing - good focus, detail, balanced & rational mind, calm & considered, authentic, has will to drive change & cares about people & services. Also like that he isn’t divisive, destructive, erratic & egocentric - which has become the hallmark of Sunak & the Tories. PS, Great to see you on C4 last night! Felt different on big screen to see good, honest discussion on mainstream TV. Studio set could be bit better - lighting, backdrop, seating, camera etc. Minor things but otherwise real breath of fresh air to hear informed, calm & real conversation without interruption & spin 👏🏼👏🏼.

As an undecided voter. I actually thought starmer came across pretty well. Defended himself well against Rigby questioning & thought she came across a little rude with constant butting in. Then the audience bit showed compassion & some decent answers. They could have had more info & he does waffle but it’s never going to be perfect for either candidate. The question about him being boring was pointless, what was he meant to say, may as well just said he didn’t like him. He is kind of boring but after the theatre of the previous 5 years that’s needed. Felt sunak looked tired & didn’t really want to be there, contradicting himself with the audience part at times. But I feel his team has let him down & he is trying but taking its toll that it’s to no avail in the polls. Unfortunately the 14 year record is impossible to defend for him. Both are a better choice & less extreme than both candidates in 2019. The format was much better, Rigby was more interrupting of starmer but probably cooked Rishi more because the Tory record is there to see so balanced out well. But starmer may have won my vote tonight

If you imagine there's a line between left and right, there's a line between them but not much actual distance. Meanwhile, there's no "line" between Rory and Boris, but far more actual distance than between him and Alastair. Same with Alastair and Corbyn. We may have the highest tax burden ever but but but our tax take/ GDP ratio is still much less that other European countries that have better public services and quality of life for their citizens. Why can’t our politicians just be honest with voters about public services like the nhs and investment needed. If national debt is not to increase then real improvements in services will demand higher taxes. And as in other countries this may not be a bad thing. So long as the investment is linked to long term, results based on planning and clear means of measuring progress.

Despite our being ranked the 6th most wealthy country in the world, our GDP, per capita ranks us 34th. That means that trickle down doesn't work and those who are getting most out of the economy are not paying enough tax. Austerity has led to a virtual pay freeze, which means that in real terms, for most of us, our disposable income is considerably less than it was in the noughties. So why are the Tories still cutting tax for the wealthy, whilst resisting any legitimate pay increases for the rest of us?

I’m assuming you mean ‘moot’, not ‘mute’. ‘Mute’ means speechless or silent. So, IF he was able to deliver a victory (which is highly unlikely, but seeing as you asked) then his position as PM would depend on the size of that majority. If he returned to power with a larger majority than before, he’d actually strengthen his position and be solidified in place. This would definitely buy him more time… although it’s hard to say how much. If he won the election but with a reduced majority or even if it was a hung parliament with the Tories as largest party, then it’s difficult to say. Arguably, he could then say to his party that he was right to call the election early, and that might enough to save him. Governing would be even trickier though, and the factions within the Tory party could make his life really difficult. Obvs this is all highly unlikely, but it’s an interesting thought exercise!

This type of comment amazes me, given how bad every single facet of our country is now and based on the fact that most of the issues have been caused by the Tory’s why wouldn’t you want things to change? After 14 years the Tory’s won’t change, they are becoming more and more hardline and less interested in our public services or bettering peoples lives other than their own or their mates. There’s far worse to come from the Tory’s especially if they merge with Reform and introduce some of their policies. There a very small chance Labour will be worse, a middling chance that nothing changes but still a pretty good chance they can start to improve things. Why wouldn’t you vote for a party that does actually want to improve things even if there’s a chance they don’t manage to do that. Unless you’re very wealthy voting for the current right wing Tory’s is like a Turkey voting for Christmas

Interesting observation, I hope, about Keir Starmer "putting the answers at the end": This is classic organisational mindset when communicating difficult/significant change. When you're talking to your 'board' (or equivalent) you build the case for change then go through the options then reveal the selected option and the delivery plan. What 'the people' (employees etc) want is to turn that pyramid on its head. (The nationwide 'engage for success' movement has done plenty of research on this). The 'hierarchy of information' for this audience should be: What is going to change. When. What does that mean for me. What does that mean for the people I care about (team, service, customers etc). What do I need to do now. Now, remind me why we're doing this.
