Labour probably need wealth taxes as the months go on & that has not been ruled out. I've lived & worked in Canada, 5 years, America 3 months, Greece, 10 years, Denmark, 6 months, Spain 1 year, France 9 months, Germany months but with English friends living there & I can tell you class in the UK is a prison compared to the Countries I've lived & worked. Anyone who does not see this is blind & deliberately blinding themselves.

@peterharridge8565
@peterharridge8565 6 күн бұрын
@@joshyman221 He thinks you are imprisoned by your class. But as your Father was an immigrant he didn't understand the concept. In contrast the concept of class is often more extreme in the poor, 'I'm working class and proud of it'. Whereas the middle classes are the ones who less understand the concept. Of course there are the upper classes but actually these people are very few in % terms and mostly have inherited wealth. For example the royal family. But if anyone is imprisoned by class, it is likely themselves doing the imprisoning. It's a thing, no doubt, in Britain but mostly it is the working classes who are making it last. But is it your accent holding you back, yes sometimes. But accent has changed for example in the London area, my Grandmother was a cockney but now today you rarely hear that accent. In fact her accent had notably changed because of moving outside London, as would be obvious to me when hearing her Cousin Sarah (or was this my Grandad's Cousin) but anyway Sarah was a died in the wool Cockney. And in fact was funny for my family when hearing the accent. But today we have an inner city accent in London. No one needs to have this accent, and it is I think caused by a lack of education rather than class. For example most Footballers and virtually everyone that I have heard under the age of 50 saying them when they mean those. 'Them people instead of those people'. My Grandparents would never have said that, and if I'd have said that my parents would have corrected me. But regional accents are another thing, I wouldn't expect people to change their accents to a Southern BBC type English and can well see how some jobs may not be open to you. This is unfortunate. But simple if you want to be middle class, you will never be upper class so don't try, talk properly and try to talk like you are educated even if you are not. Being born in Welwyn Garden City to working class parents on a Council estate that comes easily to me as my accent was pretty good. And in fact at school, most people had the same accent, close to a BBC English accent. As close as you could get on a Council estate. My Dad, working class and proud of it, but his accent didn't show that at all. He left school at 14 but loved books. I left school at 16 without an O level, most at my school only had CSE's and yet when I last worked in a warehouse I was the go to person for any info on politics or news or history. The ignorance of some people frankly astonished me, just because you are working class doesn't mean you don't listen to the news and educate yourself. Easy to do that now, with the internet. Hope all that helps.

i’ve been saying this to everyone. the “scary” £2000 figure sunak is touting is £40 per month when you divide it over the four years it’s actually based on. that’s exactly what i gained when they lowered national insurance in april. i feel no better off since gaining that £40, and i would much rather they take my £40 per month and i get to live in a functioning society where i can access a GP and don’t have to witness horrific scenes of deprivation and poverty whenever i need to nip into the city centre.

@peterharridge8565 11 күн бұрын
@@sillygoosegoose I don't think it is scary. They should have owned it, instead they called Tories liars for the process they chose to achieved the figure. Well that's not the point. The point is why do they replicate the Tory plans, I assume they now won't as Tories say 6% NI. But when they say no increases in NI they should be talking of 12% NI as that is what we had recently. Still, you feel no better off despite getting £10 PW more. This is exactly the issue, give anybody anything they feel no better off. But they are. Not just now, for all time. some people, are not just grateful people. Put it this way, take it away, most people will be moaning. We have to get a life here, you want spending up (in NHS, defence, helping the poor etc) then someone has to pay for it. They still appear to believe they can do all that on squeezing the rich until the pips squeak. We all know that doesn't work. All this talk of the tax burden being the highest since WW2, well good. Because we haven't been taxing enough. We can see that from the debt we owe. But why is the tax burden high, an interesting point as tax allowance is more than it was (allowing for inflation) than what it was under Labour in 2005-10. Must be the higher band where you pay 40% as this is now frozen for years. On that, people paying into a pension when they are taxed 40% get 40% tax relief. It was said by Andrew Neil yesterday that they might scrap that. That would be a good thing. Make it 20% tax relief for everyone. If they were honest (if they will do that) they would state this in their manifesto. But not honest. Are the Tories right when they said a £500 bill PA for everyone, must be (minimum). But Labour should own that. We all hear in polls that people want more tax, so let them have more tax.

@@schofield4836I know I’m not the person you asked but since it’s the point of this space, I’m going to contribute as someone who also plans to vote Labour but hopes they continue to improve as a party. Frankly, simply trying to “control” immigration doesn’t work. Historic trends show us that generally net migration into the UK goes up when things are going well and it goes down when things are going very badly. The reality is we’re experiencing a labour shortage and for whatever reason may be the case per individual job, not enough people already in the country can be found to fill those roles. The asylum system under the Tories has become an absolute shit show, so we can’t even find the people who don’t have legitimate claims and sort them from those who do. “Deterrents” like the Rwanda scheme don’t work because people will just come anyway and chances are we can’t even get any significant number of people sent there (even leaving aside the morality and the money it’s wasting). Funnily enough, for all the right hates the issue, if you’re worried about immigration, you should really be worried about climate change because as parts of the world become increasingly inhospitable because of floods, droughts, temperature extremes, etc, more people will be looking for somewhere to relocate to. We have to address the root causes of the multitude of problems we face as a nation and as a world. People like Sunak/Braverman/Farage are all about superficial proposals that don’t actually fix the real problems.

Great podcast. Thank you. One thing that concerns me is that you highlight the complexity and nuance of making manifesto commitments, yet dealing with existing commitments and that the reality will likely change what can be delivered. Makes me wonder how we the electorate are supposed to really use and trust the manifestos?! They're just a statement of intent yet they're delivered and promoted with such specificity!!

Labour have badly misjudged the mood of the people and have missed the opportunity to produce a radical and progressive manifesto and will find themselves restricted in what they can do moving forward.

I'm one of the rare people trying to read most of the manifestos. It's a rough job though, I wouldn't wish it on others. Labour's manifesto feels as sparse as they promised. Given that they are safe in my seat, I think I might have to vote for someone else. And they do have a standard, more traditional PDF of their manifesto, you just have to dig into the 'accessibility' section to find it.

@@uiscahammond3171 cheers, that is really interesting. To be clear, what is a dealer in NL? The coffee shops? Yeah, you are probably right, it is just that alcohol is so expensive in the UK. A typical pint costs about £7, which is more than a joint costs, and while a single joint will list you all night, a pint will barely last you an hour. But to be fair, 20 cigarettes only costs £12, so I guess it is just that pints are a real waste of money. I quit alcohol a while back and have never smoked. For me weed is just such a better, happier time.

Lib dems should lean into voting reform much much much more. They should clearly state that they demand voting reform as a condition of being in any government. FPTP is the root cause all other governmental problems stem from. Things won't be perfect after reform of course, but politics will actually function well and therefore other reforms can be put through faster.

As above, this is exactly what happened in 2010. Unfortunately, the naïve LibDems thought that the Tory supporting media would actually publicise such a thing… Which of course, they didn’t. Meaning that most people didn’t even know it was happening, hence it had a tiny turnout.

🦘 A question rather than a statement; Is it not the case that what you are seeing in your country are the inevitable characteristic final death throes of an empire ... merely accelerated by several appalling 'leaders' (Johnson, Truss and Sunak) who have irreversibly sealed that fate, exacerbated by the impacts of Brexit, the pressures of population growth and climate change ... and it doesn't REALLY matter what party gets in next, the UK has passed the point of no return and the decline will continue?
@jezlawrence720
@jezlawrence720 11 күн бұрын
No being in the death throes of the empire were why we joined the eec in the first place. What we've got now is a small nation having a stroke. And just like a stroke, the damage will be worse and last longer if we don't recognise that quick enough and seek treatment.

I noticed in every single interview and debate with Labour, it's always that there's "no tax on working people" and not "no tax on people" in their manifesto. That screams to me that they want to tax things like passive income on super rich asset holders and multi-millionaires, but don't think that it's a vote winner because of all the worry about tax. Surely then in the future when people say "aha! You are going to put tax up!", they can respond with "we said we're not going to tax working people, and these people aren't working, they're shareholders making money from interest and dividends."

Just a passer-by giving his 2 cent. I imagine there is a shed load of cash to be saved by reducing the time it takes to get things done. Every hour is someone's wage of course. So if the blocks and time sinks for planning, infrastructure and services can be reduced. I reckon there is a lot of money that can be spent elsewhere.

Had a look at a few of the manifesto's. On my mobile I googled the Tory manifesto, and it went straight to a PDF with tiny text. When I searched for Labour it was mobile optimized with text large enough to read. Reform says there one is only a working draft and it won't be finalized till later this year. And the Reform tagline is "The Immigration Election".

Labour needs money, but they've ruled out a tax on working people. So it's time for a tax on people who aren't working: a land value tax. It would raise billions *and* incentivise house building *and* incentivise more efficient use of land.
