When I was serving in USS Nassau (LHA 4) we had some Midshipmen (Naval ROTC) come aboard for their 'summer training cruise.' Cadet Strong reminds me strongly of one of those 'Middies' or 'Cadets,' also a young woman both full of energy and inquisitive as all hell.

I’m glad that someone decided to come up with a story without the original crew of the TOS Star Trek. The thing that I have to say is that the acting is quite stiff. The script is too much like trying to teach science and being a show at the same time for elementary or middle school kids. Need also close up shots so that the cast doesn’t need to shout across the set too. Remember that the original show is more like a stage show, they didn’t have much of a budget, but did have ways of making a professional production.

Clever names... The pilot is named Driver the Navigator is named Garmin and the engineer named O'TOOL., comm officer Bell (as in Alexander Graham) and science officer Tesla, security Justice BRIGGS....funny! I did think it was unusual for the medical doctor's opinion to be sought for a scientific mission. And a disproportionate number of women. May be from a matriarchal Federation planet? But if they want to be in Starfleet, should accept wearing the microskirt uniform! ;)
@cosmictyger6 жыл бұрын
Dale Stafford the number of women shouldn't matter...
@im.empimp6 жыл бұрын
Ideally Starfleet crews have ratios similar to the larger population, so it shouldn't be primarily men or primarily women, or primarily any specific ethnicity, religion, etc. e.g. ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_sex_ratio en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_religious_populations#Adherent_estimates_in_2012 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_contemporary_ethnic_groups
@greg32846 жыл бұрын
Those numbers should vary statistically, with 8 people on the bridge, the chances would be similar to flipping a coin 8 times. 7 females and 1 male shouldn't be that crazy an outcome. 128 to one. So if there's 128 starships, there's a 50/50 chance this would happen once. Get my numbers right folks?

A little weird they should know the star gravity will be approximately the same as a black hole. Dense object where if you get too close to the event horizon then you are in trouble. Fun stuff though.
@colinbridger14277 жыл бұрын
The story is great, but the Captain is so indecisive.... spent the entire episode asking for recommendations and wasn't even sure of her own ship's capabilities. The chief science officer just kept rambling and hardly took the time to breathe. Couple of other people already mentioned it... for an award winning cadet, she didn't know what a lot of presumably basic things were. The set looked really good, the writing needs a lot of improvement, but the characters/actors were pretty good for a fan flick. Also, why were there Type-9 Shuttles in the background of that Captain the cadet hailed?
@LanLe-rz4lm5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it was to give everyone a chance to participate in the drama of the episode..this I understand, if it's the case. It's having fun experiencing in the ST Universe.
@desiguy555 жыл бұрын
i too question the capabilities of the captain. we have to keep in mind. the whole idea of these federation ships is based on the military and the captain is of the highest rank to be given aship to run and he/she must move up to this role through accomplishments.
@cosmictyger3 жыл бұрын
With a cadet, aboard, it was probably an educational opportunity. This discussion would have probably happened at the table with department heads. She probably, thought it didn’t merit the time. Lots of discussion like this on Enterprise, Voyager and Discovery. I’d expect less on the Defiant. I’m sure it was regular, along with conference room discussion, on ships like the Shenzou, pre conflict, and the Enterprise -D, before the Borg.

The cadet idea is interesting, but I have to point out a "failure of imagination" by the writers here. What I mean is they didn't anticipate how smart students get in the future from better education techniques and advancement. For example, in season 1 of Star Trek TNG we learn that kids as young as 10-ish are already learning CALCULUS, something that in the present day (at least in the USA) normally doesn't get taken before ages 17-18 for the most advanced students in High School. Given that, an AWARD WINNING *SCIENCE* cadet not knowing what a black hole does is just not believable AT ALL. I agree with others here, mark this as "for children" please!

ok I felt I was watching Cosmos with a Star Trek theme and why if the cadet contacting SETI instead of a University (they have xenobiological related sciences) also umm. To many non-essentoal personal involved in the discussion and the Cadet was a little clueless for being an award winner (basic info clueless) and the Captain seemed seemed like she was unable to make instant decisions really even for a fanfic this was bad
@Memy0017 жыл бұрын
My question would be why would there still be a SETI if there was a Star Fleet? During this era od Trek we had 12 Constitutiion Class Ships, and I think it was 126 other class ships, and were still pointing anttena at the sky?

Nicely done for what it is, but my nit with many of these fan films is also apparent in this one - sloppy , wrinkled and ill fitting uniforms, unkempt hair (both men & women), beard stubble on the men. Things which you would NEVER see on a Hollywood starfleet vessel (JJ Abrams versions aside). Captain here should have had her hair up in a bun ala Katherine Janeway style. Just that one little detail would have made SO much difference and made her appear more confident & experienced. Anyway, good beginning......
@MichaelWinter-ss6lx6 ай бұрын
Big B💩 ! Gravitation doesn't get bigger from a BlackHole. You'd have to be on the surface of the star to have that gravitational effect when it turns into a BlackHole. Other way explained, the star collapses to a BH, then you could get closer to the gravitational center, from where is no escape. But the gravitation is not stronger than in the stars center. The outer star layers just won't let you get there. The stars fusion makes a contra pressure to the outside, so the star doesn't collaps, as long as its fusion is fed. So, their playing BS; not in the tradition of Star Trek. 🚀🏴☠️🎸

This comes across as a middle aged science teacher’s misguided attempt to make science appealing to his 10 year old students using a cool, relatable TV show. Except he/she forgot that Star Trek is far from cool or relatable to the average kid these days. FYI, I am that middle aged guy, but I realise my love of Star Trek is niche, rather than mainstream!

First mistake...Do not use Okuda designations, if anything, the Grissom you have here looks closest to a Coventry class frigate {Ships of the Fleet, Vol 1 Mastercom Data Centre} or Surya, with a pod attached. Precursor to the Glenn class science vessel Grissom? {STIII:TSFS?}

It was. Star Trek III. Are the shows creators aware of the hiccup, let alone the registry number difference in the 'canon' USS Grissom? Seems odd, since this configuration would have made it a future Miranda-class after a refit, instead of an Oberth-class. Then again with all the CBS stuff...maybe it's for the best? *shrugs*
