3 жыл бұрынIf we start traveling towards Alpha Centauri with a rocket it would take 100,000 years to reach there which is humanly not possible for us now. So, in order to reach there much quickly project STARSHOT was founded 5 years ago in 2016 by Mark Zuckerberg, and Stephen Hawking Yuri Milner.
Right now scientists are designing ultralight probes. Each probe is 4 m wide but only a few 100 atoms thick at the center, it has a Camera, Processor, Battery and Transmitter which takes its overall weight to ~10 grams. A spacecraft will carry 1,000 of these probes and launch them directly into the Earth's orbit. After that, ground based lasers will come into effect and fire 1+ gigawatt of energy onto each probe for 10 minutes.
This will accelerate them to 15-20% the speed of light and the probe will begin its journey to Alpha Centauri. At 15% to 20% the speed of light probe will arrive at Alpha Centauri in 20 to 30 years and will make a close fly by to its planets. It will collect and transmit data back to Earth that will take 4 years to arrive at the speed of light.

I made a simulation of this in Universe Sandbox making the probe around 19% the speed of light and it took roughly 22.7 years to reach the system. I've chosen to launch towards Alpha Centauri A because the star was bigger and easier to locate because it is brighter. Also a good idea would be sending a signal around 4.35 years before reaching to slow down the probe so it can get a stable orbit around the star. It would be so crazy like we can discover many planets orbiting the 2 stars and will be our first man made object to officially orbit a neighbour star.
