For your “double boiler” with the tea pot, I always put canning rings in the pot vs the tin foil. It keeps it steadier and will avoid a tipped tea pot filled with candle wax. Great idea with the paper muffin cups and pine shavings. We always saved tp rolls, cut them in half and added dryer lint. We poured the wax over them then.

i'm a little confused on the statement about commercial starters having a petroleum product in it so you wouldn't use them. but these would feel comfortable cooking with. those candles are made with petroleum based wax. parrafin wax is petroleum. soy and beeswax would be a better choice, i believe.
@susanjones3177
@susanjones3177 2 жыл бұрын
Gee, I didn’t know paraffin was made with petroleum. I do know that the commercial fire starter we have bought before smell like burning oil or tires. Not the kind of smoke I want getting on food. The unscented wax and paraffin doesn’t smell at all so I assumed it was same. Susan, Becky’s Mom.

@@susanjones3177 i was a candle maker for many years, so i'm familiar with it. paraffin is a by product of the petroleum process used in making fuel. the commercial ones you mention may have been made with a lower quality wax or some other additives were used. next time y'all get ready to make these, hunt down some beeswax. tht would smelll wonderful burning! if you have a local bee farm they might even sell unrefined to you super cheap since it still has dead bees/parts and honeycomb in it. and since you'd be using it for this purpose, there would be no reason to need to clean it first. thanks for responding susan. i think you are as much of a natural on the videos as becky is!!

retired candle maker here. the wax will melt MUCH faster if its broken up in chunks. freeze the old candles first. then take out your agression on them with a hammer (garage or patio floor would be best). if making large batches, we used an electric roaster with a water pan. it would keep our large batch of wax at temp while we made our various scented candles.

So when it’s the end of her day, normally I think, ok, that’s the end, and then she pops back on for the next day! And again a few minutes later. It’s like the video that you don’t want to end, and then it doesn’t! It’s so great.:) I always feel like it’s my lucky day, but then I remember that this is Becky, and she is just that amazing, which is why her channel is my absolute favorite of all.👍▶️👑

Cheap candles are made from paraffin wax which is a petroleum product. Unscented beeswax or soy wax are the only candles we burn inside our home. Also some cheap candles may have lead in the wick, so keep that in mind if including the wick the wick in your fire starters.

@wickedwinnie 2 жыл бұрын
@@Z0MBiiK1TTY not if you don’t use any kind of dryer sheets it’s not. I can’t stand dryer sheets (basically poison) and haven’t used them for years (or any kind of fabric softener for that matter). Most of my clothing is also cotton so I know my dryer lint is not toxic, in fact I put it in my worm composting bin with no problem. I highly recommend people stop using any kind of dryer sheets they are just absolute poison and not needed. The smell of clean and fresh is “no smell“ 👍

I use tumble dryer fluff too. We only have natural fibre clothes, so it's just like charcloth (waaaaay back before matches, a flint & steel were used to make the spark, but you needed something to "catch" the spark - charcloth. They made charcloth by burning scrap cloth in a very low oxygen environment, same technique as making charcoal. You can do this yourself with one of those tins car sweets / mints come in, poke a few tiny air holes with an awl / punch, stuff with natural fibre cloth, light it & carefully cram the lid on - it doesn't burn super fast, it's less dodgy than it sounds. Leave on a heatproof surface until the following day- fire will have burned out & tin cooled down. Voila - charcloth! But dryer fluff is less messy & using something you'd otherwise waste!)

@hannahkayee831 2 жыл бұрын
@@wickedwinnie I agree. I'm not sure about them being poisonous so I won't comment on that. I just don't like to itch. I use free and clear everything.

I always make my fire starters at the campground. Don't have to worry about wood shavings getting all over the house, and I just use a foil mini-loaf pan to melt the wax on the grate in the fire pit while it's burning.. use tongs to pick it up! Love the idea to just use hamster/chicken bedding... I had gone to the trouble of hunting down cedar chips because someone told me I had to... and those aren't just available everywhere.

I love watching you both. I am definitely going to get the supplies at my thrift stores & make these fire starters for camping. Something else you can use is dryer lint & the empty TP or Paper towel rolls. Stuff those with the lint & you have a great fire starter. As a FF dryer lint is highly flammable & a great way to recycle things you otherwise throw away. Although the wax will definitely make this type of fire starter last a lot longer. Great idea…thanks for sharing. 🔥♥️

Paraffin wax is made from petroleum (yes, the same petroleum used to make oil and gas). It is the sludge remaining after fuels are removed. Then they use chemicals to make into wax. It contains toxins and carcinogens. Soy wax is cleaner and a longer burn. I would try that as a firestarter.

I make homemade candles. You can also use your toilet paper/ paper towel rolls for fire starters. The old lint from your dryer and pine cones work GREAT along with the old wax.

I received some as a gift from camping buddies. They decorated them with a tiny pinecone on top. So cute!

We make these with saw dust, also works awesome. Paraffin is made from petroleum, FYI. One could try making with soy I suppose if health issues preclude such candle burning

Use your dryer lint! Also any dried plant materials, flowers, pine cones. Great way to repurpose trash and scraps!

I use a soup ladle to transfer melted wax. The small volume helps avoid getting splashed and burned.

I always use left over candle wax, wood chips from taking down and processing trees, in egg cartons. Love this for both inside fireplace and camping.

YOUR MOTHER IS AWESOME!!! Seriously she's such a nice lady and I love how she tells you what she's done "wrong" in the past like the wood chips getting caught in her rug!! Love it. You definitely get your teaching style from your mom because you are also detailed about process' and why you do things the way you do.

Should have known you were homeschooled with so many skills and interests. Im a homeschooling mom too.. Can't wait to make the firestarter if we go camping . I tried to make them with dryer lint but there were too many synthetic fibers so they didn't burn.

My husband has been making these for a few years now. They work great. I had a random box of paper bathroom sized Dixie cups that he used and he has also used the paper egg cartons, too, like you two did. For the wood shavings, he saves wood chips from untreated wood (from the chopsaw or chainsaw) and we also save dryer lint and mix it in as well. Great way to repurpose random scrap items! He has a station in the barn where he assembles them using a single electric burner. Another great video!
