The starter and battery in these cars are designed to do the start stop thing, The starter is heavy duty. In the Ford Fusion they use a big AGM battery, which is tolerant of frequent starts. I don't doubt that the increased complexity of cars as they try to wring more gas mileage out of them is going to contributed to problems, but they have made an effort to mitigate this.

Modern engines are built for auto start stop. Engineers know these issues and they resolve them by modifying oil pumps, starters, alternators, and batteries to cope with the extra cycles. I don’t understand why auto start stop is a bad idea, but hey, maybe that’s because I’m an automotive engineer and I know more than most people about this stuff.

OK, its good for the engine and the battery (aircon keeps running while start/stop is active, music and light is on) to start and stop every 2 or 3 minutes in stop-and go traffic. Even I stick an hour or longer in a traffic jam. Mhh, no, mr. engineer, i don't use start/stop automatic. beckys2222 By that logic, we should have hand cranks on all of our cars to start them. Things don’t just break randomly. An auto start stop will be designed for the same life as a regular starter motor system. It’ll break just as quickly as whatever you’ve got.

Got bare bones sport. I only wish I bought a manual. All the new ones have it and apparently you need to buy a 200 dollar box to bypass it. No thank you. I think they're doing this on purpose so the gasoline engines will fail sooner forcing you to buy a new car. Planned obsolescence. Love your videos Scotty, knowledge is power. Keep em coming.

My mother bought a brand new Buick Regal in the 80s. From new it would stop when it decided it wanted to save fuel especially when needing to pull into a busy intersection in Boston, accelerate suddenly (start), and it was silent like an electric car because of all the "stopping" (stalling) it did. A tech relation: Years ago IBM invented it's 'airbag' system for laptop hard drives. If a sensor detected vertical movement it would park the hard drive's read/write heads. This prevented them from hitting the surface of the drive when the movement stopped, which could destroy that part of the drive. The problem? Like that crankshaft, the drives were only rated for a limited number of park cycles, so while they didn't get damaged from drops/jolts, they died prematurely because the read/write heads wore out.

Later, technology called the SSD completely eliminated that problem, meaning you could bolt your laptop to a jackhammer and the HDD would be fine with no performance loss. Tech may not be perfect the first time, but that doesn't mean it won't get there. My little quadcopter has over 2 HP (actually 2 kW), and the motors stacked would still fit easily in your pocket, not to mention the batteries it runs can start a lawn mower (or possibly a small car), and they can also fit in your pocket (I carry half a dozen in my jacket). Pretty sure you could just make a non-geared (brussless motor ring, about 2ft diameter) connected right to the shaft and spin up a motor almost instantly.

Some model seems to have more problems than others, I found that also interesting. One of the main findings is the starter and battery weren't specifically designed to handle the stress. Plus the feature doesn't have a compatible engine to work with and the timing of when it is allowed to happen is being pushed to aggressive.

Where you’re wrong Scotty is the fact that modern cars that are not hybrid electric have timing modules in them that only enable start stop after the engine reaches proper operating temperature. What this means, is the engine wear and tear you’re speaking of on crank bearings would normally be associated with cold starts over and over again. Given that the engine is warm prior to the start and stop feature, the normal wear and tear isn’t going to be happening. Secondly, the starter motors that are starting and stoping repeatedly have larger windings in them, ball bearings, and use neodymium magnets. So yes they look small, however if your engine has this feature, the starter motor can be associated with the same quality as the generators that your typical toyota might have. Third, all start stop featured vehicles from 2016-Up are not being equipped with AGM cell batteries which are specifically designed for the fast draw, engine off at stop light, quick charging. Lastly, you can’t possibly be smarter than multiple manufacturers engineers that design these systems, and also warrant them for the same length of time of cars that don’t have that feature. Good try though! Cheers mate
@briangeiger9307
@briangeiger9307 6 жыл бұрын
Point 1: Bearing wear has nothing to do with engine temperature. Hydrodynamic bearing used on the crank depends on speed to float the crank. When the engine comes to a stop, there is wear. Point 2: Is not just the starters that are wearing, is the unlubricated gear teeth on the flywheel. They are not designed for constant operation. Starters operates by sending huge amount of current to the winding to generate torque. They heat up and need time to cool down. Heat will damage the insulation. Point 3: If 2016 and up cars are equipped with AGM batteries as you say, then what happens to all the pre-2016 cars. So you got a bunch of lemons until the engineers figured out their system is not designed right? If batteries are not designed right, what else are not designed right? Didn't the engineers test out the battery years ago? Why wait until 2016 to find out you need AGM batteries. BTW, AGM batteries also has regular and deep cycle design as well. AGM itself is not the magic bullet. Lastly, you need to be smarter than not just the engineers, but the marking department. Realize the factory is not there to do engineering. They are there to make money, meaning you loose money. Just buy a Land Rover, BMW or Mercedes, and you will realize those cars are a money drain. They are there for status. You as a buyer needs to know not every feature is desirable.

Stop start systems are probably as non destructive as the engineers could design on a budget. But when its mandated by the auto companies for emissions and mileage reasons they have to put the feature in. And this WHY they do it. its not to "Save the consumer gas" its there so they can sell a car that meets the increasingly unrealistic emissions and milage standards of various markets. Its also why modern gas engines are so horribly tuned from the factory, and you have things like off throttle rev hang, dangerously lean AFRs etc. As long as the car makes it to the end of the factory warranty - its a win for them. They don't care if it wears out prematurely. I dont care how beefed up your starter, battery, etc. Are. Every engine start is a little bit of life lost for several components. I turned that crap off in my wifes GLA250. And I retuned my WRX to eliminate the questionable factory emissions biased tune.

@Megadriver 6 жыл бұрын
Love that last line... You do know manufacturers want to make a profit right... The engineers could go crazy in the design phase, but by the time production starts, costs need to be brought down as much as possible. And finally we have the real reason start stop systems exist... They are not there to save us money on gas. They are there to meet the emissions and fuel efficiency standards of various countries, so politicians can pretend they are saving the planet. Just take a look at an 80s Mercedes and a 2010 Mercedes. An old 300D would outlive me, you, both our children and their children's children! While repair shops are full with 2010 E-classes and CLS-es. Cars used to be made to last. Now they are made to last until the new model comes out, so you can go and buy it. If you don't, you risk having to pay for expensive repairs at the dealer. And if you don't work on your cars, you will pay... Heck, Mercedes wanted me to pay 700 bucks for them to fix my w203's A/C problem. Turned out it was a blower motor regulator. Part cost me 130 bucks, 10 minutes to put it back in and a quick error codes delete with a scan tool. They wanted 300 bucks for a camshaft position sensor. Part cost me 70 bucks and was literally a 2 minute job. Scotty opened up my eyes to working on my car. Before that I was afraid I'd break something if I worked on my car. Now I can do stuff and when I'm smart about it, I won't cause trouble.

Yeah they all have limits to how much and how frequent and for how long they'll shut off, but they can still be annoying in extra urban traffic. To me the best solution to control the start stop would be brake pressure with a foot- felt click. Drivers usually know when we don't want the engine to shut off and when we do. We're watching lights and traffic in front so we can predict the worthiness of an engine shutdown. Ford F150 has an override button, but it has to be remembered and it resets when the key is turned off, so not ideal. Most of them have tricks one can do to override. Hook up a false trailer connector, turn on regular a.c. versus hybrid a.c., go to tow- haul mode, defrost, etc, but none of those are ideal. Best if we control at the brake. We can always remember that and keep our attention on driving. Self driving is science fiction for when we colonize Mars. This is what cell phone prioritizers want, so they can go from mostly distracted driving to being totally distracted.
@JamesSmullins
@JamesSmullins 6 жыл бұрын
Yosef MacGruber this is a lot further off than companies like tesla want you to believe. In order for self driving cars to work they need perfect well marked roads. If the lines are faded, covered up or in any way not absolutely perfect the sensors can't read them. This has been the failing point every time as is it's ability to deal with other vehicles around them changing speeds. Changing lanes for example is risky if a vehicle in the other lane decides to accelerate. I also suspect self driving cars will actually slow traffic as they will force larger spaces between vehicles and during turns at intersections fewer cars will turn per light cycle. We humans will hurry through to make the light but the safety measures of a self driving car will not. The end result may well be worse traffic.

As bad as this monstrosity of a system is mechanically, it's the electronics that I would be most worried about. The engine will only stop after many sensors and computers talk to each other and report their parameters to see if it's a good idea to stop the engine at that given time. I'm sure I'm missing some but (both) battery voltages, outside temperature, cabin temperature, coolant temperature, oil temperature, whether the car is on flat ground or a hill, how long the car has been stopped and how much pressure is on the brake pedal, air conditioner or heater use, and any other devices drawing current. I'm sure I'm missing some. And if any one of these sensors or computer chips fail you'll get a service engine light at best and a car that strands you (or gets you in an accident) at worst

Auto start-stop systems are a universally loathed abomination created by car manufacturers under too much pressure from government to reduce average fleet mileage stats. Thanks Scotty for a much-needed vid. The worst driving experience of my life was in a rented BMW with this ridiculous feature. And the default-on condition makes it even worse. I would prefer an old clunker to any car with this bullshit “technology.”

So in Wisconsin with my 2016 Malibu (heavy enough to handle Wisconsin roads), I've got optimum conditions for stop/start that keeps the engine going when I'm using A/C on med to high. Because starting in traffic is a hot start rather than a cold start. Cool!

Agreed...stop and start a total waste ...Toyota even has a counter that trips a light and tells you to replace the starter after a certain amounts of starts...and it’s big bucks
@joemann7971
@joemann7971 3 жыл бұрын
Toyota must be laughing to the bank with all that extra starter cash they'll be making. If they cared, they would make the starter motors brushless so that they dont wear out with so many uses, but that would be expensive. It's easier for them to use old-fashioned start motors so that you'll send it back to them so they replace the brushes and sell it back to you at full price.

You're right Scotty. All those things do is allow the manufacturer to boast better gas mileage on the sticker. On our BMW's I was able to code them to stay on. I was thinking, "these starters are not easy to get to and replace and I'm not wearing mine out by saving a couple bucks in gas!".

Jason Scott Try standing behind a dirty diesel, take a deep breath. Isn't very nice is it? Now do it again but this time with the engine off. Notice a difference? I've noticed a few drivers that active their start stop system when they see me approaching on my bike from behind. It's not nice breathing in dirty fumes. So I appreciate it when they utilise the start stop function.

If you are buying a Diesel modern enough to feature a DPF let alone stop start you are making a big mistake, its sad but authoritarian governments have killed the Diesel engines. DPF's, stop start and Adblue have ruined them and made them unreliable under performing junk. I remember the old school Diesels they were unbeatable.

The fact that the electronic systems have to keep operating, radio, lights, air conditioning etc, while the engine shuts off doesn't make any sense from a battery perspective. Some main intersection stops could be 5 minutes long or here in Hawaii, rush hour traffic is a lot of stop and go on a freeway.

Had a slant six Dodge that had a nasty habit of stalling at the first intersection of the trip to work. Every time every day....after it warmed up no more trouble for the rest of the day. When getting under way at this first stop a power brake approach was often used. If you forgot, it would cough and stall in front of traffic.....one near death experience trying to get in neutral and restart ended with the installation of a starter button on the dash... immediate start in gear. A stall/start feature that really worked.
