😅 I am here to remind myself of the thing or two. Prioritisation and the courage are the important things in life. That is why it is important for me to always be brave and to know what is important to me. Or in other words, I am here to gain courage to work on the things that are important to me, while instead of getting support from others they are trying to persuade me to go the other way. Hey, this made me think. Maybe I should just find a better way of describing my why to them. They just "don't get it" now. How about you?

"Find your why and you'll find your way!" - John C Maxwell
@shepherdfield
@shepherdfield 3 жыл бұрын
There is only ONE way, and it ain't yours - John should know this, claiming to be a Christian. I started reading these PMA authors when I was 8 and I'm now 8 times that old. ALL of their material "comes from" the Bible, however, they do "wrest (twist) the scriptures" somewhat. They all copy each other and come up with a "new" mix of the same things. It is good for folks who must be EXTERNALLY motivated, a large market. The "faith healers" do the same, saying you did not get your healing because you did not have enough faith. "It is God that giveth thee faith". Therefore, they do blaspheme much. Listen to Godly men who prove their faith by their works (James) and read good books by dead preachers (Spurgeon etc.) and some who are still alive and have been studying and preaching/teaching for at least 40 years.

@climberbob1
@climberbob1 4 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why it's "gifted", or the speech is brilliant. His voice is UNOFFENSIVE, but it doesn't make me swoon. IF you can keep your audience from falling asleep, you've accomplished something! Vin Skully had a soothing voice.I'm also not so sold on his hypothesis either. But everyone here seems to be swooning over him. The examples he chose fit his hypothesis, but my Senior year Economics Professor started out the quarter with "you've all studied the laws of supply and demand, plotted charts and determined the optimum price points, studied macro and micro economics, but the truth is that none of that data exists out in the real world. What you've been taught is how firms behave - as IF that is what they were doing. The equivalent would be if you went to college to be a pool player, you'd be taking courses in physics and geometry, but that's not what the professionals did. If you wanted to get a degree in auto racing, you'd be taking courses in physics, solving simultaneous equations, and so on, but they don't. They drive. And the truth is that it's the risk takers - the ones with a little different approach, that are the ones that are successful. And the majority of new firms fail. Risk takers even moreso. SO the number of very successful businesses - is a very small number. Many more fail than succeed. But if you happen to be that fortunate one that hit the right combination, you might be the next Apple or Tesla. Lastly, I was directed to this talk by a friend at work after I was telling him about how important it was for me as a kid to know "why" with regards to rules we were given, and that I always explained that to my kids, and never had to repeat a single rule that I'd explained so they understood why. But I'm not buying it here. In fact, management in my aerospace doesn't want to know why. They just want the answer they asked for. Or they just want my question, they don't care why I'm asking it. I'd like to disagree, but there's an expression: "He who has the gold, makes the rules." The examples he gives of "why" I'm not guying. The Wright Brothers didn't build a plane because of "Why". They had an idea, an invention, a CREATION. They simply WANTED to do it. Unless the "why" was so they could fly. lol.

@nambiarnikhil11

To Simon Sinek, Thank you. The art of drawing inspiration is confused with the temptation to drown in facts. People act on purposeful concepts. In my limited experience, I have observed two worlds. One that focuses on the results and the other focuses on the process. The result happens to be a consequence of the purposeful process. Both worlds are necessary, but the one that inspires action is the one with purpose. In your example, Langley showed the shallow temperament of the one that chases the carrot, in contrast with the Wright brothers' passion towards their purpose; bringing them victory inspite of the odds being stacked against them. This contrast between the pursuit of excellence and the pursuit of results explains the reasoning behind inspiring achievements. The pursuit of excellence does not expect a result and it does not sway towards probable odds, it just doesn't accept mediocrity. That's why, the pursuit of excellence has no limits and so do the achievements of the ones that pursue it. Start with why and end with the endless pursuit of excellence. Sincerely, Nikhil Nambiar

Summary: "People don't buy what you do, they buy WHY you do it" You need to give people a reason - a WHY to your service or product. People can understand benefits and features, but it won't change their behavior. "This textbook about Japanese language has 1000 vocabulary!" Is no where near as good as "We believe learning a language should feel natural and anyone can learn a language in 6 months. Our material has..." etc.

"..We believe learning a language should feel natural and anyone can learn a language in 6 months" This is still a seductive feature set: 1. ...natural = easy = ease of access (pedagogy/style) 2. ...anyone can learn = populist appeal (who is it for) 3. ..in 6 months = how long will it take? (amount of time for pay off)

Just the key points: People don't buy what you have, they buy what u believe. U start a business with those who believe what you believe. Don't go after the results, go after your passion, your purpose, your reasons and what you aspire to do. U have a plan to share with others, and want them to agree with you. Don't go around saying listen I have a plan , perhaps a great plan. Just simply say here's what I believe, here's what I think. People will listen to you .

I really liked how Simon broke down how the "what, how why" into examples with Apple to really drive his point home. Simon got his point across with the having a purpose in why you do things. Making sure you believe in the things you do will make you go farther in life. I definitely think everyone should hear this. It is great for explaining how to market and draw people into what you are selling or believe in. You have to be that 2% "the innovators" to be first.

"The goal is not to sell people what you have, but to sell people to believe what you believe." What a profound statement. SO many things we do throughout life with the idea of an end goal. Get a job. Raise a family. Make money. But we too often get lost in not knowing WHY we want to do it. Asking yourself what is your "Why?" in life I think is what sets apart leaders from great leaders.

People can change their lives for the better, if they find God. God empowers us with faith, confidence, family stability & love for neighbor. Simon is advocating business sense here, not necessarily your personal solutions to a better life. 'why' is important to decision-making, yes. But so is 'what' and 'how' with respect to problem-solving, team-work applications as well as split-second adrenaline choices. I hope you do not aspire to Oprah's lackey list of self-appointed Gurus who THINK they have all the answers by becoming 'one with the universe' & the stupid 'secret.'
@AdrienneLloren
@AdrienneLloren 9 жыл бұрын
You share some good points there, however I don't completely agree. I believe that a person can change their lives for the better if they choose to do so and act upon it; whether or not they have a strong sense of faith in God or a higher being. And if your faith in God empowers you and helps you shape a better life for yourself, then keep on keeping on. I just don't think that's the answer for everyone. I also understand that Simon discusses this concept using business as an example. However, since I am not a business woman I chose to take this concept and apply it into an area in my life that I am currently working on which is my personal development. By switching how I identified myself from 'what I do' to 'why I do it' I allow myself to do the things that are in alignment with my beliefs and values resulting with a stronger feeling of purpose with my life. Lastly, I feel as though it is ignorant to claim knowing "all the answers", so no I do not aspire towards that. I aspire to be a student of life, love and personal development. I believe my life is a gift and I intend to make the most of it.

Yes, a person does not HAVE to subscribe to faith or God, in order to attain a specific goal in his/her life. Let me give you some examples. Hitler did not require strong morals or God or conviction in faith to become the leader of the Nazi party. Anderson Consulting did not require spiritual enlightenment from God to achieve record breaking profits - they did this by self-empowering themselves and it worked. Terrel Owens did not require the words of Jesus Christ in order to shatter wide receiver records in the NFL. He relied on his training regimen, work ethic and his mother's encouragement. I would not want to be any of these people. However, for every example of a person that achieves personal happiness and growth WITHOUT God, there are 10 people who DON'T achieve prosperity, family stability, financial freedom and REAL love. Just refer to studies done by Blue Zones, Timothy Dolan & ABC News. What makes a person truly happy and successful? That's subjective. I have friends who make 300 K a year, but are divorced and not happy. Then again I have friends who make minimum wage, but feel blessed in their lives because they have a loving spouse, give their time to charity and have strong parents in their lives. Tony Robbins, a famous Speaker once said..."Have you read the New Testament? Read it. It's a GOOD book." I won't hope for you, Adrienne...I won't wish for you, Adrienne...I will pray for you. Because prayer is communication with a tangible, living being. A Father who can physically and spiritually help. This is my opinion, and I do respect yours.

This is excellent. First time I've heard it. It makes a lot of sense. America itself was created on a "Why". It's in the Declaration of Independence --- the why was a big idea about all men having unalienable rights. But this can apply to almost any large endeavor. So, I'll have to think about the ways it can apply to my own life. Thanks, Simon Sinek! 2/20/22, 11:22 p.m.

Before applying for companies, I wanted to reassure what my cause is, what motivates me, and what my gut feelings are telling me. I keep coming back to this video and his book "start with why". I mostly do this to keep eye on my why. Sometimes I do it to remind myself. Starting with why is not only about inspiring others and doing good communication - it is also about keeping yourself on the right track and, to me, in line with your morals. Working with something that doesn't align with your morals is contradicting and in worst case contributes to a development that you don't want to see in this world. Therefore, I don't see "start with why" as a tool only to sell products, rather it is a way to nudge the development in the right direction. It may be an example of over-analysis but it works for me :) Personal notes: The following section I want to use as personal notes for revisiting this video in the future, reminding myself of what my why was at a specific time, reflecting on how I aligned myself with the why and how my how's and what's have changed over the years. (14/6/22) first entry: By re-watching this video today, I have realized what has been the cause of my struggles in my studies as of late: I lost my why. But not only that, I developed my why. I think my previous why was just a dressed-up how and what: I want to better living standards by becoming an attaché at an embassy for my country. This was obviously very concrete how but what and why were vague. Now, my belief system has changed slightly and I want to start with why. Why: because I believe every being has the right to live. How: contributing to the Danish Vegan Party's election campaign. What: doing whatever I can to better the party's chances to get elected and be present in the Danish government, specifically by being part of the communications team.

"Orville and Wilbur were driven by something else, they were driven by a cause, a purpose, a belief. They believed if they could figure out the flying machine it would change the world." The Wright brothers were exactly right. Flying has changed the world in the way we transport goods, travel, and more. With no college education and only money they had raised were the Wright brothers funded. They were brilliant humans as they had a dream and went after it. Great leaders and an inspiration to me. A reminder that sometimes your knowledge will only take you so far but your will and perseverance can carry you the rest of the way.

I simply just want to say this... People choose their lifestyle... They choose what job they learn... They choose who they marry... They choose everything in their life. People complain that they have "bad" jobs, and their why can never be monetized... But if you follow your dreams and educate yourself, following your dreams can pay for all that you want and more. Fate does not exist... your mindset shifts where you go in life. And if you believe in yourself and your dream enough, you can build your own destiny.

It's a powerful way of looking at things, and for many people, thinking like that lets them flourish. But it's dangerous to use that to judge others, of course! We need to recall that so many in the world still end up having 'rock and a hard place' choices as children that shape their lives profoundly, or live given choices that corrupt and limit them, or face suffering and danger on the other side. Poverty, ignorance, and the prejudice of others collapses the choices of too many; and even clearly bad choices are made for a reason, too often. People choose first to survive, in whatever conditions they are in, and always will. Also as as a note on lifestyles; not all brains work the same ways, and sometimes clashes between the norm and outriders collapses otherwise viable choices. When there is no education that their brains can process well, they can't choose education as readily. There are limits on the choices of many that they are not in a position to break free of, at least not without help. And that's where those of us who do have these choices come in! What you describe is an ideal that should drive those of us who do have that level of choice; we should work to make that kind of choice truly as universal as possible.

Why do we have to fall prey to dualistic thinking? Is it fate? Or is it self determinism? Why can't it be both? OR Is it both? Do you choose your name? Your social status you were born into? Your parents? Your genetic makeup? Did you will yourself to be born in a certain time and place in human history? Do people choose to wake up one day with cancer, or suffer from mental disease like dementia? We live in a flawed broken world that is far from the ideals and grasp of "creating your own destiny". You and I and everyone else on this planet will suffer the same fate, that is death. Our Life is shaped by exercising our free will choice and the experience of circumstances out of our control.
