Momma!! I think you have got to be the cutest on KZfaq! I seriously would love to sit at a table with you over an iced tea and a good meal! People used to call me a food hoarder, because I would buy 2-3 of something on a good sale like bbq sauce, canned tomatoes.. when lockdown happened and the grocery stores ran out of everything we were more than ok, and I had enough to share a little with friends. Now I show them how to do it themselves. And they don’t call me a hoarder anymore!

@Rachel Hero, Same here! Because we have lived for decades in these NE GA mountains and are used to unexpected weather events and health events as we aged, I always shopped and what we ate that week, depended on what was on sale, and what was in season in our area! After stocking up with a couple extra items each trip, We everything hit, we didn't have to go in a store for months, except for bread because yeast was what we could not find in our area and we had used all we had at home, making bread in my bread machine! Yes, I use my bread machine as I have arthritis in my hands that long ago, made me give up kneading it by hand! Now that I am a Senior and watch tons of you tube videos and reading others comments, it surprises me how many of the younger ones do it not keep their pantry stocked up for those unexpected times that life will always throw at us! When things began shutting down, we ramped it up and now with all the events and shortages and problems the Truckers and the Farmers are facing with the hardships over diesel, fertilizers and unavailable parts for equipment we are so Thankful we took note and had been used to keeping our lives frugally and simply living! I Pray more of the young families, get stockpiled, try to reduce their debts, learn to garden, learn to cook simple nourishing meals at home! I hope they will take heed at the hard times that we will all be facing, for what I am thinking will last a number of years! Take Care and God Bless to All! Donna NE GA mountains🇺🇲

Mixing different beans together I find gives a more satisfying "heartiness" to a meal. I may miss meat in a meal containing one type of bean, but I never seem to miss it in a meal containing a variety of different beans. For this reason, I always "mix it up" when making a meatless dish.

Sometimes in the Hispanic section of the grocery store, they will have seasonings in clear plastic envelope-looking bags. These can be purchased quite cheaply, sometimes under a dollar. Also, in Walmart's Hispanic section, they have 7 oz bags of pasta for about 47¢. Better than none, especially if you only have a dollar or so for your "Just in Case" pantry. Thank you for another outstanding video!

@@floralbouquets regarding the small bags of pasta, if you have an Aldi or a Save-A-Lot in your neighborhood they both carry them. Save-A-Lot is the most expensive. They used to be the cheapest. Aldi has the best price on those 7 oz bags right now. I get a couple everytime I go just to put in my just-in-case pantry. As a single senior citizen, I don't need giant bags of pasta and those 7 ounce bags which are roughly half a pound anyway, are more than enough for several meals for me. Plus I can always afford to throw a couple bags in the cart every time I go and they do add up. Not to mention that the smaller size macaroni and shells cook very quickly, and the small sized alphabet and fideo also cook up super quickly in broth to make a good soup.

After I married ....many moons ago. I started a pantry with one small shelf and a large box. That was it! Money was tight! So before I went grocery shopping.. I shifted any canned food or products out of my cabinets that were left and that I thought I could spare out of our stock. And put it in my box or on the shelf. And then did my grocery shopping. If I found something on sale I bought 1 extra for my pantry. It slowly stacked up. We get storms here and the power can be out for 2 weeks. That little pantry grew ,...and helped us more times than I can count.

NIDO brand powdered milk...sold in the Spanish food section. Comes in canisters. This milk product is good because it has vitamins for kids added and milk fats in it. And in a pinch could make a baby formula. Because it has the vitamins in it. Just add the karo. This would be for babies without milk allergies. And you could use it as well to make butter.

Hey Brooke 💜 this is a fabulous video to help someone get a " just in case" pantry started. As with almost anything when you're just starting out & you haven't done it before you need some help knowing how to do it! I searched for preppers who I could get help from - many show big stock up hauls from the membership stores $500 & up then they turn a room and all the closets over to pantries! That wasn't helping me - I live in a small apartment & I don't have $500 to put out for stock piling! The help you give us is helping us so much!! Love you 💞 & keep 'em coming

Before lock down I stocked up as much as possible, including toilet paper. We only had to do to the store for eggs or milk. My husband thought i was crazy. Now he helps me stock up if he sees a sale or uses his 5 off if 25 coupon for Dollar General. He saw the value of being well prepared. When toilet paper was one pack per person i would get it and share with family and friends because we had plenty. It is good to be prepared and in today's world economic environment it is like an investment. Thanks for the video.

In 1994 my husband and I were in a head on collision with a seemingly and couldn’t work for two years. We had to go on food stamps but only received $85/mo. Luckily we were still able to give the government commodities for about six months and then they stopped them and I had to figure out how to cram that food(butter, cheese, peanut butter, beans, rice, pasta, instant potatoes, canned beans, fruit and veggies) into my monthly allotment of food stamps and it was impossible. There were many months towards the end of our food and having a few days until the next allotment came in the mail that I didn’t eat much because it was more important for my son, who was 8/9 and husband to eat and I ate a small amount and if they didn’t finish theirs I ate their leftovers and drank a lot of water or tea to help fill me up. After we recovered and were able to go back to work I started working on my pantry. When anyone asks about it I say I do this because you just never know what can or will happen and this way my family will be fed without any worries. In 2020 I didn’t go shopping but one time in March at the beginning of the month and I didn’t buy a whole lot. In April I went once and again didn’t buy as much as I normally would, mainly fresh produce and dairy items. May I found toilet paper!! But again still wasn’t buying like normal(limits kept me from my normal shopping). My pantry wasn’t as full as I normally keep it but we were still doing well. Before that when we had to buy tires or repair a truck we had the pantry and freezers to fall back on and not worry about affording the repair. Friends or family fall on hard times? I am able to fix a food box and help them out. It is just being prepared for whatever life throws at us. I do a lot of my buying in bulk especially flours, sugars, beans, seasonings, cornmeal, etc from Azure and boy does that help. Since the tp fiasco of 2020 I buy it in the large packages and I buy it pretty much every month wether we need it or not!! Great video

My family called it 'putting food by'. It was just the normal way things were done. You store food so it's there if someone in your family or friends lost their job or was sick you would be alright until things started to look up again. If there was a weather event or say a pandemic came up, lol. During the great t.p. shortage we managed to squeak by because we tended to buy when it was on sale. Thankfully that got us through until the stores restocked.

My just in case pantry got so large that now I only go to the store and buy sale items and I am able to utilize my just in case pantry with the sales. I still buy just in case items each week too, to continue to build on that, but mostly, I am working with the "extended" pantry as my everyday pantry now because it is great to have mostly forever items on hand and not have to worry about things going bad all the time. Just starting a real pantry...I think that is what the just in case pantry turned out to be for us. Rather than a junk food, processed food pantry with no real nutrition in it, this has the ability to work for everyone.

I agree in calling ours a "just in case" as well. We've built ours by buying 2 every time we only needed one of things like canned veggies, all types of beans and soup mixes. I coupon (no cheating couponing) so I have over a year of all hygiene products for free or pennies. Toothpaste, body wash, bar soap laundry soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant etc.. I also have a years supply of tp & paper towels. I need to bulk up on salt and oil. It's taken time to build up & I've been able to donate so much to the church pantry as well. I'm in MI so small house & yard, no garden but miss growing up with a "can closet" in the basement. My parents are southerners (Pikeville, TN) & between them and my gran & pa pa, we never bought vegetables, jelly, honey, tomato juice, stewed tomatoes, chili base etc. until I was in my late teens. I've been watching since the beginning, just quiet. I love watching and seeing your channel grow so quickly. Have a blessed day, Brooke! xoxo

My mom grew up in a BIG family of 11 and food was scarce, my grandma always made do and everyone always ate but once my mom got married and started a family she NEVER wanted her kids to feel like there wasn’t any food. She was definitely not a hoarder or anything like that but well prepared so when the lockdowns happened her & her now partner were good. They had plenty of food to last for months. So because of her I’ve always kept a full pantry. Since COVID and the lockdowns I’ve changed up the foods I store though, now I keep a full freezer too, we’re a vegan / vegetarian family and we eat A LOT of frozen veggies & fruit (because it’s much more affordable up here in Idaho) and during COVID finding frozen veggies here was damn near impossible especially in the first couple of weeks. Now we have 2 chest freezers & we turned our living room closet into another pantry and I have a cabinet for my dogs (we have 3) and dog food sold out everywhere (thank goodness we had just bought 2 big bags of food so we were good but a lot of people weren’t.) Sorry for the long comment! But yes build your pantry just in case!! It always scares me when I see people with like 2 days worth of food in their house 😭

I got a dish drainer that fits in my sink. Walmart. It was around 12 dollars. I've had it for around a year or so. It's metal. Great video.

Watch the cheaper oils. Because they have a lower burn or flashpoint than others. And will catch fire more easily.

I agree spices make a meal. I would get tomato sauce or pasta sauce. Your beginner pantry is a good one. God bless you!!

Found vegetable bouillon at the 💵 🌳, last month. P.u 2 jars of it. (I use bouillon in my canning.) And check out the Pine-Sol/Lysol area!!! They usually have a concentrate that makes 5 gals, of Lysol, and Pine-Sol. Can't buy a reg size bottle for $1.25! We pick it up EVERY. SINGLE. TRIP.

When we were shut down for the first quarantine, I was in better shape than my coworkers. My bills were paid for the month, I had a full freezer, pantry, personal care items including toilet tissue and money for the next month. I had at least one coworker down to her last hf a roll of toilet tissue and stores in our area had none. Luckily coworkers shared with her

I seen that pink salt and I said she better pick that up it's like 5 bucks at walmart! We call it an emergency pantry but it's a working pantry cause I use what I store. I agree with seasonings. Remember a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. Well seasonings make the food go down too. Lol sorry I live in a movie reference...

Just fyi… dollar general and family dollar (particularly Fam dollar) still have the same dollar tree type stuff (they’ve been bought out) for a dollar. I’ve never been a big fan of Family dollar but I’ve increased going since DT went to 1.25.

Now that Dollar Tree is $1.25 I'm finding Aldi and Walmart cheaper on some things that I use to buy at Dollar Tree. I have a Dollar Tree, Aldi and Walmart in the same parking lot so I check Aldi and Walmart first to see if it's under $1.25.

I have a 3 year pantry. Then I got sick and can't eat very much of it...figures lol. Still plenty of canned veggies I can eat in there and I batch cook for my husband his own meals and freeze in portions because cooking 2x per each meal is just enough to make me fling open the door and go running down the street screaming.

If you have more than one Dollar Tree in your area or close enough, you should really hit them all because I've noticed they will.varynin what they carry! I am actually getting ready to look through my pantry and freezer to meal plan...which I'm TERRIBLE at....its HARD for a Single Catmama. Lmao...I am.still.adjusting from cooking for a family size (stayed with froends.and familyndiring hard times a few years back)
