If you start a mix on the right foot, you’re much more likely to succeed.
The fact is, most mixing mistakes are made at the start of the mixing process…
And it’s going backward and having to correct those mistakes that lead to mixing sessions going on for hours and hours!
In this week’s video, Graham shows you the first, crucial step whenever you’re starting a new mix: assembling your static mix.
This video is taken from our flagship mixing course, Mixing University. If you'd like to learn more about the course, go to: mixinguniversit...

All very good points Graham. As a general statement; Don't overlook the fact that a track could have too much gain on it from the beginning and might require a gain adjustment which would be better than running the fader at -30 since that can affect your fader resolution. Either way, it is all about balance and starting out with success in mind. Thanks for the great content!

How can we avoid this ? I'm confused, because some people talk about mixing at unity and other that you should stay at +3 / -3 range . How ?!

@@yungcbeatz160 read plugin manuals. 0dbVU is usually a place where db hits processing nicely which is -18dbfs. I usually put all my tracks in and level the beat at an avg of 0dbvu. Then I build all my vocals around that. Maybe this makes sense or not but clip gain until -18dbfs avg, THEN move faders where it feels food. This allows the plugins to be hit at their desired level based off the manuals. And then you can sculpt the tracks with moving volume faders

Cheers from Central Florida. The day that gain staging clicked, so did digital mixing. From that day, my mixes already sound great before any EQ or compression. Getting great levels at the source was a game changer. For my style of music, I like to aim for -10 to -14 LUFS

Can we doing gain staging first or to setup volume balancing
@DrSauce
@DrSauce 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I understand, gain staging is typically for if a track itself is recorded too quiet or too hot. It's not about the track's volume relative to the mix. I personally make sure everything is gain staged well before I begin changing volume sliders.

no matter how you level it, this song will sound great no matter what. Let me tell you something, no matter how i balance my song, it will always suck. In the "static mix" process i always need to compress or eq so i can't do the so called static mix because to find the sweet spot i need to lower the volume to the point that i can't hear anything. It's frustrating because whenever i lower something i need to lower another thing because it became loud and keep lower until i can't hear anything, reset everything again and the infinite loop continue forever. I don't know if the song is bad composed (nothing is out of tune) and if something is wrong I can't tell what and why. I don't know the difference between gain staging and static mix for sure.

When do you convert midi to audio? Is that before the gain staging for the static mix? Also, when do you switch the monitoring to mono? Is it after the static mix is complete and before the next steps like eq/compression? Thank you

Thanks Graham - awesome A little question: When the Static Mix is done and it's time for EQ, do you use EQ with automatic volume compensation? I normally do, but it makes me wonder, is this the wrong way. If I turn down a lot of low end on the track the volume compensation will turn it up and then suddenly the track is brighter in the mix, and I was only trying to adjust too much low end. Does it make sense or am I overthinking ....
@Mcgiver699
@Mcgiver699 3 жыл бұрын
There's no right or wrong, if you use automatic volume compensation then you are saving a lot of time compensating manually. Just ensure the compensated volume is not louder than it was before you applied EQ. More power to you brother.
@cbaldeon
@cbaldeon Жыл бұрын
I think you are overthinking. Just use your ears and feeling to see if it is neccessary to compensate and if so, you'll decide how much volume.
