One of my favorite queries editions! Janna went into such technical detail that I had to get acclimated, first, but it just got SO INTERESTING! Can't wait to see her again! Joseph's comment brings this video full circle. At the beginning of the video, they're talking about how skimming the event horizon of a black hole you would see the entire lifetime (the future) of the universe. At the end of the video, they were talking about the finite universe where walking from one point in a straight line, you would eventually catch up to the light of your galaxy (the past) where you would see yourself as a child. It gives us a sliding scale of how far into the future or past we wish to travel, but in either direction, it's only visible to us and we're not partaking in it nor can we change it. Ergo, we really are the prisoner of our own time. That is, if I understood this correctly :)

@@ForOrAgainstUs I agree. I hate how they feel obligated to dumb down science. What the hell is the point of mixing comedy? Nobody finds the two a good mix. Science, or comedy. Together they just frustrate everyone with a brain. It's like porn and comedy. Some things just don't mix. And on top of that, Neil loves to talk so much he steps all over everyone. Very fun episode! Just want to note that Warpdrive and Wormholes require "Negative Energy Density", not negative mass. In fact, it doesn't even require negative energy. What is required is a means of reducing the density of matter, which is essentially an anti-gravity "inflation" field. Where, it is the matter which is inflated. When matter is inflated, the volume increases faster than the energy input, and the density goes down. Clocks run slow when accelerated because they are under compression. A clock in the inflation field is not compressed by the acceleration, therefore it does not run slow.

In 26:23 you say, that the square root of 2 doesn't exist in the real world, because that it is an irrational number. But if you make a square with the side lenghts of 1, the diagonal has the same length as the square root of 2. Isn't tne only reason that it is irrational because of the way that we count? Like that a third is 0.33333333333333333333333333... but if we would count in base 3, it would just be 0.1. And nature doesn't care how we count, so isn't it actually possible to have something with the length of the square root of 2 in nature?

Pretty sure it's because pythagorean theorem and trying to square/root the number 1... it's just always 1... so the hypotenuse of a box with equal sides of 1 is also 1 and therefore is not a natural example of "the square root of 2." I don't quite understand the predicament at all whether "root 2 exists in reality," because quite frankly, I haven't even seen any number 2's walking around anywhere in the real world either... if I do I will certainly try to square it up!

Around 8:45 did she say that black holes could be Schrodinger teleporters? The traveler both travels through the black hole and is smeared on the surface, thus sending an identical copy forth and disabling the original? Or is it more of an Einstein effect where the observer on the ground and the observer traveling through the black hole just aren't experiencing the same effect. Observers outside might "see" the traveler spaghettified, but if the traveler survives then the observers only saw an optical illusion of spaghettification?

I hear you. Sometimes I think about myself at the furthest point away from Earth where I can see it as just a tiny spec and it's a bit daunting. Because, we here see it as so big in front of us. But Earth really isn't anything when it comes to space. If Earth were to explode tomorrow, space will be infinite no matter what. Puts it in perspective how much life doesn't really matter. Which that perspective helps when you get stressed out over something so small. Billions of years from now, you won't matter to Earth. And you definitely won't matter to Space.

I've got to agree with many comments that this very interesting discussion was somewhat spoilt by the chap on the right. He didn't have anything relevant to add. In fact his lame jokes were misplaced and distracting.

Man that woman is very well spoken and interesting to listen to. But that comedian really just detracts from the show. He has nothing to input on the actual discussions. He seems like a nice guy and maybe even a decent comedian but he doesn’t really belong on a show like this.

People like fun. Have you never had a group of friends? 1 is smart. 1 is kinda serious. 1 is the funny one. Balance of diversity is fun. Some stuck up people who think the world should ALWAYS be nothing but boring information..not that the information ismboring, but the exchange of information being boring..sure, they will have a stickup their ass. NDT actually enjoys sharing information to people whom are less informed, just as much as he likes exchanging with those whom know more. He's explained this many times. This set up was basically a tailor made setup for him.

People (more sciency people) have made that observation/complaint since the beginning of the series. Having an "everyman" comedian on the panel is a way for less-sciency people to have a sympathetic representative there, to point out the weirdness or complexity and make the panel bring things to a layman's/public point of view or level of understanding. The actual jokes may be more or less successful, but it keeps the atmosphere a little lighter and stretches the pace so the public audience isn't getting bombarded with stuff that's over their head too fast and/or too many times in a row. If you are already literate in the field at hand, this effort wasn't for your benefit, so it may seem like just a string of interruptions. That's what you get for being a science geek! :) If you want the heavier versions of science & futurism discussions, check out "PBS Space Time" and "Isaac Arthur" channels, or for an in-between presentation level check out "Astronomy Cast" and "The Royal Institution" which are also public but assume a good attention span and focus to topic.

animist channel that’s a really fair assessment and I think you’re right. I may have been a bit too harsh, I guess just personally his jokes didn’t add much to my enjoyment, but I can understand why others may enjoy that sort of personality on a show like this.
