Turn the key and hear a click? Chances are it's your solenoid and not your starter. This video will show you how to start your boat until you can get your solenoid repaired. I've had these go out before and always carry a spare for the trim and starter. This video doesn't show how to swap it out, that's to easy. It shows how to turn over the engine when turning your key won't. Make sure your key is turned to the on position.

You saved me! Our boat hasn't been started since 2017. I tested this with my volt meter, got zero volts, and knew this was the culprit after your video. I threw 2 screwdrivers on each lead crossed and got her to crank. $30 later my boat is running again. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!!!

That looks like the slave solenoid. The master starter solenoid would rest on top of the starter, which on my 4.3 liter GM, hangs below the bilge. However, I have those clips in my boat at all times and they can be used on any bad nodes on a solenoid such as the up/down trim etc.

If your bypassing the solenoid by touching the two contacts then more than likely the starter itself is the issue. A trick to get the starter moving sometimes is to tap it with a hammer. I would replace it after that since its on its last legs, so it doesn't leave you stranded

odd problem, i have to have a 12v from the batt to one of the leads of that slave solenoid (not the starter lead) -- if i do not have 12v to it,, when you turn the key you will not get the ignition ready beep and no fuel --- if i have that 12v on that lead and start it and it runs,,, if you disconnect it, in about 5 seconds it will start beeping and then shut off ----- somehow that lead is telling the fuel pump to run -- 97 mercruiser 350 magnum gen+ --- changed that slave solenoid and both fuel relays (for some reason it has two even though single engine) --- so far my guess is either that big 50amp breaker button is going bad or the actual computer ignition module is going bad? could have a real short somewhere idk,,, but i know its not wise to operate it much while the 12v wire is connected to that slave solenoid

Thanks for this. If you have time could you answer a couple quick questions please. Any info on pressing the Red circuit breaker on that solenoid? And sorry for this really novice question but do the wires on the clips need to be run to a power source or do you just connect them to the solenoid?
@lh98
@lh98 4 жыл бұрын
the red breaker should only have to be pushed if it popped out which if it did could mean a short somewhere. the wires on the solenoid are one hot jumping to the starter when you use the jumper wire so only the two on top of the solenoid nothing else and only briefly to get it to start then take the jumper off or you’ll ruin your starter and possibly your flywheel!

Your setup is a bit different than mine. I have a Mercruiser 4.3L MPI Inboard Alpha engine on my Tahoe Q4 FNS. I know that the starter and the solenoid that rest on top of the starter is located at the bottom end of the engine. I've heard some conflicting comments suggesting that what I'm being lead to believe is the starter slave solenoid is in fact not the starter slave solenoid. I took a picture earlier of my starter with the solenoid above it. I was not able to determine that any extra wiring was landed on the solenoid at the bottom of the engine. The only wiring that I know about as of now is the bigger main red wire that comes from my cranking battery and the negative wiring that leads from the solenoid directly to the starter. When I flip my switch from off to on, I do hear the clicking from the solenoid that lies on top of my mercruiser engine.
@fixinstuff
@fixinstuff 3 жыл бұрын
The starter solenoids are pretty reliable, The slave solenoid is on top of the engine behind the breaker and tend to fail. If its your starter solenoid try tapping it with something that may get it to work temporarily.

probably the solenoid. it’s cheap to try first and briefly jumping it will tell you if it tries to start. if it doesn’t try to start then it most likely the starter is bad if it doesn’t then it’s the solenoid.
