Starting KETO (7 Ketogenic Veggies You Can Eat) 2024

Here are 7 ketogenic vegetables you can eat as much of as you want when you're first starting KETO (and one bonus!). All veggies have some carbs, but in certain veggies the carbs are low, and so locked up in the fiber and surrounded by vitamins and minerals that they are effectively ketogenic.
If you don't like one or more of the veggies on this list then you will be happy to know that new research is showing that you can retrain Your Palate! It's not too late to learn to enjoy these veggies.
Another good way to eat these veggies, even when you don't love them, is to saute them in butter or lard, salt, pepper and spice them up to taste; that will make them easier to eat.
Depending on DNA, gut flora and goals, NOT EVERYONE will be able to eat as many of these veggies as they want. But overall, these veggies, when eaten raw or very lightly cooked and eaten with a big portion of fatty meat, will keep most people in ketosis.
Caveat:
Some people's DNA, because of living/reproducing for millennia in Northern climes will not be able to eat too many veggies without the carb count slowing their weight loss, and perhaps even causing inflammation. If your ancestors spent the majority of their time on this planet above 45 degrees Latitude, then it is likely you won't be able to eat as much veg as you want without stalling...

@@Icewing10 For me Maria its all about my mindset when I start you have to be right in your headspace BEFORE starting a new eating regime....First thing I do is stop eating after dinner thats where I have trouble eating watching TV before bed...With these sort of plans if you can make it to the end of week two usually you are good to go because your cravings seem to disappear just make sure to eat if you ever feel hungry dont starve yourself.

@@shadowbanned5164 Thank you! I started eating more meat. I am a snacker too, love love to snack on chips of all kinds instead of eating. Eating more meat has stopped me from going into the snack closet at work. I am still apprehensive with this diet. @@Icewing10 Eating (snacks) is important the secret is to latch onto a snack that fits in with your plan but thats not something you would normally desire and you can have as many of as you like pretty much...With me I always had a few boiled eggs in the fridge or celery/carrot sticks which I would have with cottage cheese....Not something I would usually eat but they would fill a gap and more importantly fool my brain into thinking I had just had something I wasn't allowed lol

3 of his 7 are all varieties of a single species, which is all of the cruciferous veggies (Arugula, Bok choy, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, & Collard greens) are a single species that is a biennial crop, meaning if you harvest the top (stems & leaves above the crown) before winter, then keep the roots from freezing by protecting them beneath a pile of dry insulating leaves, the roots can sprout new plants again in the spring, though they might look like one of the other varieties of cruciferous veggies than the one you planted. All of these cruciferous veggies can also be preserved without refrigerator space by putting them in a shallow layer of water in a dish on a windowsill (south facing in N. hemisphere is best) after you buy them from the store and trim a sliver of the dried stem off of the bottom of the head of the cruciferous plant you purchased. As long as you change the water every couple of days so it stays clean and make sure that the bottom of the crown doesn't dry out, and the leaves are not immersed in the water, the plant will soon grow new roots from the bottom of the crown, and the leaves will get even greener and healthier than when you bought the plant. Then you can break off only the leaves you are ready to eat at each meal, and the rest of the plant will keep growing on your windowsill, and will keep making new baby leaves at the center from the diet of sunlight it gets. I've harvested about a head and a half of leaves from a head of cabbage or bok choy stretched out over a month or two without refrigerating it, and ended up with a sturdy set of roots that I can then plant in a garden to get a second harvest from the plant. All from an ordinary head of cabbage bought at any store, though you have to peel away all the damaged leaves (and cook and eat them) before you try to grow the head hydroponically on your windowsill.

I grew up on wilted Lettuce, kale & or cabbage.. fresh greens hot bacon grease, raw onion and garden fresh tomatoes.. salt, pepper & garlic.. toss and serve salad.. Absolutely great taste with any meat, when affordable fried bacon was added along with the bacon grease. We only cooked with lard or bacon grease. Absolutely no sugar, however we did eat bean soup and fried potatoes & cornbread. Southern style. Just a side note... we did not snack in between meals, never! We never felt hungry.

Dr Berry, you once mentioned that you had had GERD really bad. I was wondering if the fact that you seem to have to swallow a lot now like you're needing to clear your throat has anything to do with that.? Not trying to be rude at all here but it's pretty obvious that something is going on. I just wondered if that is a carryover from the condition you had once. But it's something I have noticed in most of your videos, that you seem to have to swallow a lot, almost like something is in your throat?

One thing I love to make to take the place of salad dressing is Greek tziki sauce by chopping up garlic and cucumber and mix it in with whole, plain, Greek yogurt. Sometimes I also make my own mayo with eggs and olive oil then add the garlic and cucumber to that also and it's an excellent replacement for processed salad dressing. They're good on both veggies and meats.

There is no such thing as "high cholesterol fats". We have been lied to for decades about so much. Cholesterol is not the enemy, neither is saturated fat. We die without cholesterol, it is in every cell especially the brain. I highly recommend you look into the Cholesterol Myth, you will find out that ALL of the crap we've been told is based on zero good science. I really like the books by Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, Statin Nation is a great place to start. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes are all connected, and carbs and sugar are the cause. The history of how cholesterol and saturated fats became demonized while massive amounts of carbs became the official recommended diet for western countries is insane.
@widehotep9257
@widehotep9257 2 жыл бұрын
We've all been duped for decades. I remember hearing nutritionists saying you should never fast or let yourself get hungry, because doing so makes your body "hold on" to fat so you can't lose weight. What a bunch of nonsense!
@elizabethwhite1068
@elizabethwhite1068 2 жыл бұрын
@@widehotep9257 Yep, I remember that as well. We also used to know that too many carbs made us fat. Semi-starvation diets destroy your metabolism so that your body needs less to function, making it so easy to regain the weight and then some, becoming a vicious cycle. Hello obesity epidemic. If you look at the history of the whole "cholesterol" will kill us, you find that Ancel Keys, the scientist who came up with this garbage, even said himself in the early '50's that dietary cholesterol does nothing to raise blood cholesterol. Yet by the late '80's and '90's the public had been put in a panic over eggs, and was throwing away the most nutritious thing we could eat. How the hell did that happen? Then the AHA finally removes their awful advice on eggs, but does it so quietly people are still throwing away yolks. Low salt is a lie, "5 a day" is nothing but a marketing slogan based on zero science, so-called "vegetable" oils are toxic to humans, and 3500 calories equals a pound is a lie. The damage done is a crime against humanity.

I hardly ever ate coleslaw (mostly green cabbage with a very small amount of shredded carrot) because it was too rough to eat but sauteeing ...... gosh, what a change. I started my road back to health 2 years ago by eating a vegetarian diet. I watched documentary videos that made meat the devils work and awful. I lost weight and my diabetes spiked then started to go down a tiny bit. I then was told about keto from my daughter who wanted to lose 20 pounds, and get healthier. She dove in head first and learned about keto mainly from you and a few others on the internet. She’s very bright and now is very nearly perfect, reaching both of those goals. It’s taking me a bit longer to become fully dedicated to this journey. So far, I’ve lost 70 of my 200 pound goal, and I am better yet I’m still not yet fully enlightened as to the process. I’m off insulin and medications for the last 3 months and my numbers are low, but bad stress and depression are trying to pull me the wrong way. Listening to your videos is helping today. My 1st goal is to get rid of my diabetic illness

@sghd606 Thanks for your encouragement. I am holding at 260 and at 5'&1.5". I'm 69 and my A1c was down to 5.8 but is now 6.8. My first goals is to stop being a diabetic and my other goals are lose weight and stay healthier. I can now walk up and down the stairs with one foot on each step, instead of both feet landing on each step, then one up and then the other. I still need to hang on to the railings but this hasn't happened in over a decade. I am attending physical therapy next week and want to get younger, not continue to age earlier than I need to. I need help right now to get off this plateau, and what to do to start losing weight and lowering my A1c again. I do not want to go back onto my diabetic meds again. as I know they don't really help me get better. My two downfalls are sweetened coffee, (using Stevia and sometimes Monk Fruit powder) and peanut butter and nuts. I'm determined to win this struggle with my whims and get back to becoming a healthier woman, no matter my age. I'm proud that you found a way to reach out towards your goals. I think I may try a water, black coffee and bone broth fast and see if that helps.

66 yr old, type 2 diabetes, 100iu insulin daily, 5'8 225lbs. Started 1/2hr exercise routine daily 1 month ago and started keto 2 weeks ago. I also got a Libre Freestyle glucose monitor and now can see my blood sugar level all the time including golf and garden work this tool works for me , I hated pricking my finger. Well point is I have lost 5lbs and reduced insulin requirements by 60%. My A1C level on last test 3 months ago was over 10, today test results were 7.5. I try to stay under 30carbs most days but once a week or so my favorite cheat is a potato patty at breakfast and piece of fruit evening snack. Also just discovering keto cooking other than standard veggies consisting of (bacon, onions, zucchini, and crookneck squash with almond sliver topping) . Your show is very inspiring to me and I will share my journey with you.

Hi Dr. Berry -- Don't forget that avocados or guacamole can also be frozen to save money. Just buy a bunch when they're cheaper, cut in half, take the pit out and the peel off. What I do is then rub a little lemon juice on the halves to keep them from browning, then vacuu-pack them before sticking them in the freezer. It helps me have affordable avocado year round. If you don't have a vacuu-pack machine just use a freezer bag and get as much air out as you can before freezing. Bargain tubs of premade guacamole (check the label to make sure it's all real avocados, no gums or fillers) can also just be frozen.

Yep! Agree use tons of avocados in our kitchen, tons of greens also. Why did Dr. Berry leave out greens? He mentions kale but not spinach, arugula, Swiss chard, raw beets and beet greens, lettuces, parsley, mint, (many other herbs/greens), chilies and tomato free, , sweetener free hot sauces? OK he’s only referring to,fresh organic veggies here. Bacon fat is great but olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, are super for Keto weight loss, maintenance healthy diets. Also Siete brand grain free (cassava) chips & tortillas at Whole Foods.

This videos are sooooo helpful. I work on a psych unit and was attacked by a patient. He destroyed my entire humerus and broke my arm in 4 places.then the surgery ended in drop wrist.. I've been struggling with so many issues since my accident. From gaining weight from not being active to depression to healing. The vitamin D was a great video. I had mine checked and it was an 11 prior to the injury and with supplements over the past year is still only at a 25. Thanks for All your knowledge. As always knowledge is power 💪

Cabbage makes an excellent hamburger wrap. Just rinse the leaves a bit to get any sand off of them, shake the extra water off (not all of it), and stick them in the toaster oven for a couple of minutes to soften them up just enough that they won't crack. A lot of people do lettuce wraps, but cabbage is sturdier and tastier, IMO. It's also excellent boiled: cook some garlic and onion in bacon grease (or your fat of choice. Heck, cut up some bacon and throw it in there), deglaze with a bit of apple cider vinegar, put in your cabbage and seasoning (I like salt, pepper, and ground cumin), fill with enough water to reach most of the way up the cabbage (cooking for myself, this is usually a cup), cover and cook for about 12 minutes. Pour that in your bowl and top it with cheese. Drink the pot liqueur! And if you decide to grow cucumbers, get a pot big enough to can in and make some pickles! I make a brine with a good portion of ACV and pack the pickles with dill and a couple garlic cloves. Great to put on those burgers wrapped in cabbage.

Thank you Dr. Have been binging on your videos. Please do some videos on what you like to cook. What you eat in a day. Stuff like that. My husband and I are trying to lower our blood sugars and it is so frustrating to hear “nutritionists” tell me to eat oatmeal. It makes me feel like garbage. So I started to ignore them and eat what my body was telling me to like eggs and veggies and steak. I was scolded and mocked. The ignorance being taught in medical school is harming people. Thank you for helping people.❤️

Only “need” to lose about 20-30 lbs to reach high school,weight of 95 lbs. Following Dr. Gundry diet so no cucumbers but everything else on this list is big on our diet (yes, I’ve already retrained the palettes of family members). Paleo is not a problem. Obtain grass-fed beef, range free chicken, and wild caught seafood without Issue. My gut microbiome appears to have re-established itself with help of diet and proper supplements carefully researched.
