Nice one. Shooting macro might be easier if you haven’t got another camera dangling from your hand.

Such a nice reminder of warmer days & flowers in bloom on a cold grey December day here in the States. Thank you to Kon for going along. Very special thanks to Becky for a great intro to macro photography with Nikon Z gear. I now have both the 105 & the 50. The 105 was the lens that convinced me to explore the Nikon Z system. Thank you for the lessons and the fun! Hope to visit Kew gardens someday.

Just like in portrait photography, where getting the eye in focus is the most important thing, I find if you get the part of the flower you want in focus, everything else can drift off into bokeh-land! Another idea is shooting straight on because the plane of focus is flat; unless of course we buy that tilt-shift macro you reviewed! 😂👍🏾

Becky, you haven't mentioned wind factor which generaly drives me mad when shooting outside. Also would be great to test and recommend which ordinary z lenses when used with macro rings are not good for focus stacking due to the focus breathing. Focus breathing can spoil stacking fun.

Just an observation: You might be able to hold the camera more steady without another camera hanging off your hand.

Great topic. I think the Z 105 is a fabulous lens. I haven’t tried the Z 50 lens, partly because it doesn’t look like the quality I was used to with the F-mount Nikon macro lenses. Hearing you recommend it makes me want to give it a try.

It’s easier to use a strobe, set it up, focus, shoot, your close enough to use whatever f and iso you want

Random question. I believe a lot of Z cameras now use the focal length to fine tune the IBIS operation. Is there a rule of thumb for using reversing rings? I.e. if I’m using an old 50/1.4 reversed, is 50mm the best setting to put in the non-cpu lens data? Thanks for a great video. 👍

I’ve got both the 50 and the 105. I do not agree that the 50 is better for flowers. The 105 is significantly sharper, makes a much more compressed image and you don’t have to bend down nearly as much. The only advantage of the 50 is the weight that allows me to throw it in the bag when I’m not planning to shoot macro.

I find I use both lenses, somewhat interchangeably, depending,on the look and angle I want as well as how close I can get to the object I’m shooting.

Thanks for this video! Have you tried Z 105mm f/2.8 S MC with 1.4x/2x TC? Does TC work with this macro lens? 105 MC + TC + Apcs-crop on camera = and no fence can stay in my way to photograph a flower 😎 😄

Extension tube is an economic way to enter macro, most of the macro lenses are expensive, heavy, noisy but extremely sharp. You didn’t show is the rocking back and forth focus technique macros shooter use often.

Seeing that I typically use manual focus when shooting micro to ensure what I want in focus, is in focus I sometimes use a PN-11 tube on a 300mm f4 AFS for great working distance with shy dragonflies.

I loved your video on the macro lens , I currently have the sigmas 105 lens with ftz adapteri use on my zf camera and would like to get closer , would the z 50mm be a good option or could I use a double lens adaptor for the sigma? and what are your thought on using the sigma 105 in normal mode for portrait? love your videos on u-tube

If anyone has both a Z8 and a D850, as well as the 105 MC Z lens and the 200mm f4 AFD Micro lens - please could you test the speed of AF for the F mount Vs the Z mount for upto 1:2 and let us all know

D lenses generally aren't as fast as G lenses, and worse than Z lenses in AF speed but especially accuracy. The 200 and the 70-180, were too slow to follow focus on flowers in the wind, much less bees in flight, on my D850 (AF-C, d25). If I need a longer working distance than the Z's 105, I'd put the Sigma 150 with OS/HSM on the D850. For what it's worth, the Tamron 90mm (F017) feels faster than 105G and the Tokina 100 ATX Pro. Hope this helps.

How did you know I got the 105mm today😂 I almost got the Sigma 14mm but they didn’t have a megadapt adapter. They told me the had gotten 3 Zf’s and they sold immediately

Hang in there John. I try to buy one in my local camera store but was told that it wouldn't officially be released until later that month. Even if everyone else was getting their hands on them then. Dejected because wanting one badly and Adorama said it was on backorder so I cancelled that order. Applied an Order to B&H and they shipped Me one out immediately. Epilogue: The next weekend they were on sale and I bought the 24-70mm f/4 kit lens with the Zf. Where I live in the US the East and West Coast gets priority than travels inward. Usually I have to wait 6 months to a year to get my hands on something I want. So in a span of three weeks I bought two Zf's, Z8 (WHICH I LOVE) and a Z9 for $1000 off the retail price because of it being used. Keep trying. Who knows maybe there will be a better Nikon camera coming out before you get your hands on the Zf. Two Zf's = 1 Z8. 1 Z8 with lens = 1 Z9 at $4500. Cheers!

Are ring lights a good option for macro photography? Your input always appreciated. Thanks, Don B
@madst7521
@madst7521 8 ай бұрын
YMMV. For some special purpose high magnification lenses (think Laowa 25mm 2.5-5x or their probe lenses), a ring light may be the only viable option. Shooting a lens with a bit more working distance and a ring light, could leave you with rather flat boring light (Similar to on camera flash). In such a case, you'll likely get better results from a handheld flash with a good diffuser attached. Something like Nikons R1C1 kit (which isn't a full ring, but suffers similar issues) is great at reproduction, but perhaps not as nice for taking pictures of flowers.
