My rink doesn’t have a harness, so I have never tried it. I also don’t really trust the fishing pole harness, as I feel if I go down, my coach would be coming down with me.

Good luck on your axel! Its looking good already! Do you have any tips for getting over the fear factor of going for the axel? Ive just started axel drills but my rink has no harness and I can't bring myself to commit to the jump😅

Thank you very much! My first Axel attempts on ice were without a harness and my gosh did I get absolutely rekt hahaha. BUT my knee pads helped, as well as a strong waltz jump technique. Whenever I hesitated in the jump, I'd fall and hurt myself more than if I committed and applied good technique. It's scary and if you're feeling unsafe then I recommend speaking to your coach, but it's a lot about self-confidence and good off-ice technique for me :) wishing you the best!!! xx

Jodi Reeve I struggled for a long time but the most important thing is to get over the fear! Concentrate on every move (for me it’s crossing my legs and jumping high). Don’t get discouraged it takes time! Good luck!

@@jodireeve7701 i was so scared of it too and still kind of scared I have my double sal and double toe but I just can’t get my axel consistent due to the entrance, it’s really weird. So also if it helps maybe try it from different entrances, if you don’t already have it.

You are inspiring me so much! I'm 56, haven't skated for 40 years (though I used to a little). I'm 30 kgs overweight, arthritic, have a hip replacement (need my knees done) - but I have bought my skates, had them baked and started again . Just two sessions so far, HAHA HAHAH - they were hysterical. First session I held on to the wall for the first four laps. Second session I was starting crossovers and bwards - just a little. Then back to basics. Watching your progression is proof that putting in the work pays off, and is really encouraging. Thanks for sharing!.

I’m potentially going skating in a few day, it’ll be my first time back on the ice in nearly 8 years. Expecting to resemble Bambi haha. My coach attempted to start teaching me axels once I had strong combination jumps (just singles no doubles) and I had a good backspin/back scratch. My coach didn’t offer off ice training and the rink I went to didn’t have harnesses so I just kept popping my axels and double salchows out of fear. She’d have me warm up for axels by doing backward crossovers around a circle followed by 3 loop jumps or continuous waltz until I was nearly dizzy haha. I had the height on my jumps (lutz was not as high as others but was decent enough) but just couldn’t land the axel or double salchow before I quit due to my A-Level studies at high school. Hoping after some time away and if I get back in to skating, I may be able to achieve an axel before I turn 50 😂

Imone!OnIce update on skating: I hadn’t realised how rusty and blunt my Coronation Ace blade were until stepping on the ice. I’ve only been one for a session so far. I did manage swizzles/lemons, crossovers, in side 3 turns (only left outside though?) and Mohawks. My basic 1 foot spin was dreadful yet my camel was better than I ever managed when skating frequently?! Madness. The only jumps I could manage were waltz, salchow and toe loop. Could not for some reason get a full loop or lutz, not sure if it was lack of practise or blade issue but anything involving using my left pick of right outside edge just slipped from under me kept just going over. Going back on Monday night to try again 😅

Hey! Please don't lose hope, it sounds like you really want to improve and that's half the work. So many other skaters and I started out just exactly the same as you. Skating isn't something you're born perfect at, no skill really is. It's very unfair to be so harsh on yourself. Keep at it and I hope you can explain why lessons are important to them and that they are open-minded. Wishing you the best

It's a process - you get better the more you practice and keep adding new skills as you learn to perfect the older one. Maybe keep taking the group classes then think about getting a coach later on when you want to try harder moves. PS. Do it for you - don't worry about what anyone else says!! xo

Looking good! And so exciting about learning axel. How many times a week are you managing to skate? I’m not managing to skate much at the moment plus I’m hopefully testing later this month so that takes up all my skating time (field moves - yuck!!). Your flips are looking great now but just after the jump your free leg knee (left) goes really high!!!! My coach always says to keep that energy going back into the ice (low and neat) and you’ll certainly need that once your on your doubles which I’m sure won’t be long! 😊

So nice to hear from you! This month I've started to skate twice a week for 2 hours each time, one is a freestyle session so I get so much space to practice! So exciting that you're testing! MITF is super important and as much as I hate practicing it, I also want to improve them and test. My free leg in the flip is so irritating... You are close on the axel. Your camel will improve if you focus on a basic camel at the expense of the variations. Forget the catch and hands on the back versions. Get a strong fast camel, then you have something to play with.
