You’re just amazing! Thanks so much for sharing!! I’ve always considered fostering but just never had the guts to do it. I’m a 50 yr old empty nester (3 grown boys). I’m an RN and I have more compassion and love than I know what to do with and I ADORE all children (and elderly as well). You’ve given me a lot to consider and I really appreciate you and what you do! You have a beautiful little family! God bless you! ❤❤❤

I have the same name! Laura, I'm Laura, 53 and considering the same thing. I look forward to our journeys...whether we become fosters or find a way to help. So glad I'm not the only empty nester who wants to share love and support! ❤

Could you do a video on what you need to do to get your house prepared? I know someone will come and look at your house and let you know what needs to be done to prepare your house but it would be so helpful to have a video checklist

For those wanting to get involved without become a foster parent, look to see if you have an Isaiah 117 House in your county! They're mostly in TN, TX, and IN, with a few other states mixed in (and more on the way). The house serves to welcome and support children and caseworkers on the day that children are removed from their homes - a day which is often the most traumatic of a child's life. The caseworker can bring the kids to the house and go fill out their mound of paperwork and work to find a placement in a quiet office while a trained volunteer helps get the kids what the need - new clothes, a bath, food (so the caseworkers don't have to pay out of pocket), school supplies, or even just to be a friend to play with. And in the case that a placement isn't located on the day the children are removed (which sadly happens more often than you'd think), there bedrooms in the house for the kids to sleep in - so they're not sleeping on the floor of a conference room of the CPS office or in a hotel. (Yes, that does happen 😢). They are a faith based organization which I know not everyone in this audience is, so just a heads up. I'm sure they'd love your help regardless of if you are Christian or not :)

Thank you for this information. I had not heard of an Isaiah 117 House, but the concept is very needed. I am now retired from being a mental health counselor, working primarily with children and families, and too many times a child (or children) were simply left at my office all day long while their caseworker searched for a placement. I would have to supervise, feed and entertain the kids while they were in flux. It was distressing for the child and for me. And these were totally without my agreement to keep the child for the day, and without the child knowing when their caseworker would reappear. Children going into care should not be subjected to repeated desertions at the hands of the system charged with their care.

I grew up in foster care so after struggling with infertility for 10 years my husband and I began the process of becoming foster parents. Before we could get fully licensed we got a kinship placement of 3 kiddos. That was over 3 years ago and we still have our kiddos so foster parent classes have been placed on the back burner. Thank you and John for all you guys do!

I think it’s great that you teach people about foster care and encourage it. I wish more organizations, schools, churches encouraged it.

Would like to see a list of Children’s books to help preschool age bio children understand and cope with the changes that result from having a new foster placement. Daughter has recently had 2 placed with her family for the first time.

Maybe something less family focused? The Giving Tree? Such a classic for all ages...learning to appreciate the gifts offered. The Winnie the Pooh books are beautiful for any age too...beautiful life lessons without traditional "family" as a focus.

Hey I just wanted to say me and my husband struggle with infertility. I have one biological daughter with him and we recently signed up for foster care and I am excited, but extremely scared, because we just got our first placement! It’s a 3 year old and we have a 2.5 year old so I’m so excited honestly for her to have a play mate. I’m very excited but I just want to say this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time but watching your videos has really pushed me to make it a reality

I am glad you are discussing all those other options to help. I am very interested in either adopting or fostering in the future, but I am not quite ready yet to be able to take a child into my home yet, so it is good to hear these other options on how I can get involved.

I love your videos would love a video on how you handle people and their social media posting pictures of your foster kids? This is something we struggle with!! Because the little girl we have ends up in pictures at birthday parties and events and then we see them on Facebook and have to ask people to take them down people have litterly been upset that we asked and that has limited who we can hang out with even for family! Would love to hear how you handle this as we are just getting started with foster care and of all the things we deal with I'm struggling with this a lot as it is for safety!

Informal kinship sucks in this country. My sister went thru hell volunteering to take our nieces. My nephew and signifant other are drug addicts living in their car during 20 below weather. It was a nightmare. I wish you would do a video on this broken system. My sister could write a book. Love your videos.

There’s over 100 foster youth living in shelters around Alaska, mostly because people don’t have the courage to help these children and teens, there’s such a need for more foster homes … my heart hurts, imagine not knowing if your going to have a safe bed to sleep in, or food to eat, imagine feeling un-loved, or that all your hard work and perseverance just keeps leading to heartache, imagine not having a loving family, or someone to trust, imagine taking out your traumas on people because that’s what people have given you…. And then getting kicked out and not taught.These are real things foster kids face. You people can keep thinking about it or actually take action.

I started into fostering when I worked at a childcare center. The owner had 2 which she was in the process of adopting. The process you describe is exactly what I went through here in Virginia. I was allowed to bring my kids to work as soon as I had them show up on my door step. My first had just turned 1 and showed up at 8pm. He screamed every time I tried to change his diaper. I was very verbal about what we were doing and how i would do things. I tried to find words he needed to express. It took a few days to find the phrase, "Your mommy can't be here now and we need to get that dirty diaper off of you." He immediately came and laid down and cooperated. I hadn't thought to mention mommy and why she wasn't with us. I haven't seen you address non verbal children helps. I immediately started using signs, which he learned quickly, for as much as possible to relieve his frustration.. I have since retired from fostering as a single person.

You've got this. One day at a time! Start simple. Mac and cheese can be made simply...then start to add to it. Pasta is always a simple way to explore and learn with adding meats or spices. Alfredo? Butter and milk. Regular sauce? Tomato, olive oil and spice. If you get some good basics you'll get confident enough to try something more, I promise. A staple for tired Mama days....boil spaghetti, drain, add a bunch of butter and ketchup. It's been my go to for comfort food on days when I dragged....and my grown kids still do the same for my grandbabies when they've had a long day. :)

Hi, just found your channel and I have a question: How do we pick the best foster agency to get involved with? There are three in my area, is there a way to check what foster parents really think of them? Of course they advertise themselves as best, but I suspect that's not necessarily the case. One is really close so I could easily get involved in all the programs offered.

I learned through one of your Tiktoks that it's more appropriate to say "child in foster care", but can you touch on why "foster family" is appropriate? I could make a few guesses but I'd love to hear it from you. I love your channel, and am more interested in fostering knowing that it doesn't necessarily have to be faith based.

I'm not really understanding how your videos were inappropriate, but The Home Edit was able to share a full video of a child in foster care on Netflix. It's so frustrating when the rules only apply to some people.

Is there an age limit to be a foster mother? I’m 59 years old. Can you be single? I’m in California. Can you have more than one child in a bedroom? Are you allowed to take the children to church with you, if you are a certain religion and they are not the same?
@savannahking544
@savannahking544 2 жыл бұрын
I know you can be single. Foster the teens on TikTok was single when she started fostering. And there is a max per room depending on the state, typically 2. And you can’t force the child to attend a certain religious event if they are not comfortable/that religion. The bio parents have a say in things like that.
@MommingInMinutes
@MommingInMinutes Жыл бұрын
I’m in Texas so the requirements may be a little different. For us, you can foster up into your 60s. Each child needs 40sq ft of space at least, so depending on the size of your room, they can share a room if they are the same gender.
@MommingInMinutes
@MommingInMinutes Жыл бұрын
For us, you can take them to church. They do have the right to not go to your church if they are another religion. We were asked if we would support a child’s faith if they were another religion by offering to take them to their church.
