Boblinks concert review my.execpc.com/~billp61/100702r...
Notes from Olof Björner:
This concert was held at the Pauline Davis Pavilion. It is a "livestock arena"... a small barn-like structure with a dirt floor in front of the stage, and bleachers in the back
This show is the first acoustic version of Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35, (not counting the MTV Unplugged version in New York City on November 18, 1994)
This #bobdylan recording from Red Bluff, October 7th 2002, might be the best sounding audience tape ever to grace a bootlegger's shelf. Performance wise, this could be the best show of 2002. Perhaps it was the humble fairground, dirt floor arena surroundings that inspired the band to hold nothing back and cut loose. As for the recording, the stereo mix is superb, the bass is deep and punchy, and vocals are astoundingly clear and upfront. This taper's gear must be experimental stuff from NASA or something! Matching soundboard clarity but adding the depth and atmosphere of audience placement makes this a magical listen.
#RedBluff California

Charlie Sexton
Tony Garnier - bass
George Receli - drums
I would normally list taper credits and lineage but unfortunately I have no further info, but I do believe this is Crystal Cat / 657-58

I’ve always been amazed to the panoramic variety within so many wonderful partnerships, admittedly, all of us adore Dylan. Each lineup has character and talent. His work with Joan Baez was vital. The welcome work with Johnny Cash opened many doors for others. His finest work, by some people’s assessment, is with The Band. The inclusion of Tom Petty and The Hearkbreakers was endlessly full of energy. All of his lineups seem to fulfill his ever so interesting journeys within his songwriting and a few surprising covers at times. Each is unique for it is of the moment. We are so fortunate to have, “The Never Ending Tour.” Dylan has been really interestingly explored by Martin Scorsese too. As a group of fans, we are a really, really very fortunate collection of many people from all across the globe. Best Wishes, Peace ✌️, Great Health and a shared caring Love ❤️ for our friend, “ Zimmy.”

@@michaelkenna2024 Beautifully said! It can't be random that our bob community is as varied as the man's volumes of work. There is so much to explore, I still find exciting treasures in his work even after all these years of listening.

We had just moved from San Francisco to a country place in Cottonwood CA in 2001 about 20 miles north of Red Bluff. I was shocked and thrilled to learn Bob was going to play the fairgrounds and Rodeo there! We had a doctor's appointment scheduled late that day, the doc called to cancel it and I thought great, because I would have had to cancel it to make the show. We got to the show and the doctor was there also, ha ha! An unreal show in a barn like Rodeo arena. Bob and the band were on a low platform of an improvised stage and we stood on the dirt floor just a few feet in front of them. At the Like A Rolling Stone and Knockin on Heaven's Door encore performances we all ascended onto a higher plane of bliss, then transported beyond on All Along the Watchtower... After almost exactly 20 years I just discovered this recording, a lot of water under that bridge, we now live primarily in Baja California Sur and very happily so as Shasta county is now the Militia movement stronghold of Northern California. Bob, if you are reading this come down and play La Ventana sometime, there's a lot of groovy fans here for sure!

This show killed! My buddy Wes and I called this the "Bobby Zevon" tour. They played Brown Sugar and a fight broke out , leading to a bunch of "Altamont" jokes after the song. Thanks so much for this and Atlanta, and yes, this was his best line-up as far as Neverending went. With Charley & Larry you had the great musicianship WITH harmonies.

@@StartToContinue Aw that has crossed my mind sometimes too but perhaps he has good reason not allowing too much guitar indulgence. But he must have had his own Bob reasons and in all fairness they are his band! LOL! Hey if it's not broke... :) Added note* I noticed when playing with the late Jerry Garcia, Bob was very liberal but listening to them together you can really understand why!

Saw this leg in Philly in November. Bob has switched off guitar for the first time. Took a while to wrap my head around this. I always thought that's why Sexton soon left. He wanted to play guitar with Bob. It was a new dynamic. I didn't really dig the 3 covers he did. Same old Bob reaction. I wanted what he did in 2000 and 2001. I was dreaming. That's never happened. He's a good piano player. Maybe Charlie knew what was coming. All the videos with Sexton at Dylan's right hand are from 2002. He had always been far left. In 2002 he got within kissing distance. Bon chance, mon ami.

Very well could be, although to my ears and eyes, Charlie seemed the happiest and most incendiary while trading licks with Larry when given the go ahead by Bob. With Bob on piano they got a free pass to have at it and it seemed pretty jubilant on stage. Maybe with the new Larry Campbell documentary coming out, we'll learn more about those days
