One of the most terrifying symptoms of hypoxia is euphoria. You literally get high from slow low-level brain cell death. You’re in the process of dying and you feel like a million bucks. It’s usually what leads to climbers on Mt Everest to succumb to the elements. They genuinely stop worrying about everything and get very chill and complacent.

@@derek9153 Call me crazy, but I’d rather actually be scared by a scary situation. In some cases this sense of euphoria has been what cost climbers their lives. If they had persevered to climb down the mountain, or seek shelter, or follow their survival instincts, they might have been saved. The euphoria distracts them and makes them forget the urgency of their situation. It leads to people dying who technically had a chance if they had kept vigilant

This was what horrified me while I was watching the movie Everest about Rob Hall’s last climb on the mountain. In that movie there’s a scene where he goes back for one of the climbers, but they’re running out of oxygen so he tells them to stay put rather than try to make the perilous climb down in a treacherous blizzard. However, the climber can’t seem to hear him or properly register / comprehend his words. When Rob leaves he sloppily attempts to clip his karabiner to the safety ropes and follow him, but he misses and ends up stumbling across the sheer face of a mountain following Rob who has already turned away and cannot see or hear him. The climber is clearly dazed, confused, disoriented, and lacks any sense of caution. A strong gust of wind simply blows him off the tallest mountain in the world, and he disappears into the white storm. No music, and no spectacle; he’s there one minute and then just gone the next. I replayed that scene a few times, and I was left feeling disgusted by it. The man simply walked to his death without a care in the world, and I think it’s one of the most disturbing things: to die or very nearly die without having any comprehension or understanding of it.

The reasond he rushed over to him is because as sson as symptoms like this start, you have less than 15 seconds or so to get back on oxygen or brain damage/death could easily occur. At this altitude your blood oxygen level would be in the 60-70% range, whereas a safe level is 92% and above, ideally 94% for most people. (Numbers may not be exact as I'm going purely off memory)

Thats the danger of lack of oxygen.. you simply can't process what is going on. Our body can't tell the lack of oxygen only if carbonic acid is building up it can tell that something is wrong. But if you are breathing in low oxygen the carbonic acid does not build up so the body has no chance to tell that something is wrong. You will feel "funny" but somewhat fine and then you will die with a happy smile on your face. 🤷‍♂️

Luckily my Dad, and fire fighters saved my life, and although I was in a coma for three days I eventually got better. But the feeling of no oxygen is no joke. It also can leave you a vegetable which is what they thought I would be after being almost 20 minutes without oxygen, but as of now almost 10 years later the worst i have is a bad memory. The body of people who live all their lives at high altitude adapt to the lack of oxygen. This always reminds me what a smart mechinism passing out actually is. It sucks if it happens, but in that situation for your body it's the best thing. Passing out puts you in a horizontal position immediately making it really easy for your heart to pump all the blood and therefore oxygen right to your brain where you need it most. So if you refuse to listen to cues like dizziness or tunnel vision your body goes "fuck that" mode and just shuts your brain off to get you into a position that might spare you brain damage.

@InstandXXNightmare

@@MisterK9739 I just think it’s funny that you can’t force it to not happen. Because most of the time, passing out is something that you can feel coming. But some people try to push through it which your body lets you know doesn’t work. By just lying down with your legs up, you can successfully prevent fainting. But it you don’t do it yourself, your body will lie down anyway if you want it or not.

That would probably be bad for my nephew. He was deprived of oxygen at birth. He got an experimental treatment during his teens, where he was in a pressurized chamber oversaturated with oxygen (I forget what exactly the technical term is). Several hours, several different times over a few months, It helped him a lot, but still has problems - too much damage back at birth. Point is, it's really interesting how oxygen (or lack thereof) can affect us.

Unfortunately, brain injuries are irreversible. You can in certain milder cases train other healthy parts of the brain to takeover the functions of the damaged portion. That's the only hope for my son.

@@pradeepsahoo7243 I think that's basically what they were trying to do, get other parts of his brain to compensate.

You would be both amazed and terrified to know that sometimes... up in the air, a military pilot got too much oxygen (been at 100% for too long) in his mask and he starts singing, so the ATC has to repeat on a loop " TURN OFF OXYGEN TURN OFF OXYGEN" until the guy figure out that he has to do that else he will die.

Um, no? Breathing in 100% oxygen for long periods of time is bad because it starts to damage lung tissue. It’s called hyperoxia and can lead to Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome after several hours on being on 60% or higher O2. You have to be remembering that anecdote wrong.
@hibana364

@UCZHQqNdgNTHi_718p5ysoMA Pilot Hypoxia can cause euphoria and inhability to concentrate, which obviously impairs your decision making. You eventually faint and die. Check it out on google, things said there are pretty accurate to some extent. And yes, I did say that the other way around and I just noticed, I'll leave it like this but basically it's the opposite, the ATC needs to yell at the pilot to turn ON oxygen because he didn't get enough. By the way, Hyperoxia can also cause confusion and it's one of the first sign.

Veteran flight attendant here. I sadly know this feeling as I too have encountered both a slow pressure leak, as well as a faulty air pack that was failing on climb out, and subsequently began experiencing growing mild hypoxia, and you’re right, It’s just like that! You feel off but not like something WRONG, just somethings kinda out of whack, if you even notice it at all; it’s like when you’ve had a half of your alcoholic drink, or have ever smoked a few puffs of a joint - you are happy, laugh-y, slow and laggy, but don’t quite grasp the fact that the intoxication has set it.
