I like how this product line follows what you could expect in real life. You have the first iteration that may be groundbreaking in ways, but isn't very practical yet, the balanced and improved second iteration that really takes off, the "pro" model that only sees limited use, then the more affordable model, then the one where they get lazy, then the one where they course-correct and have another success, then one made for the government which ends up being pretty useless actually, then a couple more designed to only to be small iterations to keep the product line alive.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate how cool the r7 looks with it’s red triangle photoreceptors or eyes take your pick

I love how The Mandalorian backs up that the R6 came out after the Battle of Endor by showing us multiple R6’s. Love seeing them in live action, probably my favorite design for astromechs.

I find the R4 units to be adorable. I don't care what people say about them, they are so incredibly adorable and I love them.

I love the design of the R7 series droids. Whenever I go to Galaxy's Edge, I'll build me an all black R unit, and then see about getting the head swapped for a R7 model. I'll even see about trying to get the head in a smoky transparent head so you can see lights underneath.

It's R series because they cuss a lot, hence, auto sensors.

R7s are wildly underappreciated! Ion resistance is very useful, but most importantly, they are pretty!

the droid that Luke said a bad motivator was actually for sensitive and saw Luke was too, so he persuaded Owen to buy him using a mind trick, but then he had a vision of R2 D2 being taken to Darth Vader and then the death star blowing up the rebels and he knew that Luke would need R2 D2 and C3PO so that they can see the transmission from Leia and the rebels would be saved after he had that vision so he sacrificed himself for the fate of the republic.

R4-P17 didn't always have an R2 series head. She started out with a conical-shaped head. On the planet Gyndine, as she was attempting to repair a trash compactor, it activated, crushing her. Anakin Skywalker found what was left of her and rebuilt her with an R2 series dome.

I don't know if you noticed it, but the R6 is canon, you see one, docked in a X-wing on the Rebell base in Epi.7. He had a red dome, but I can find a picture, and I don't have the movie buyed yet to make a screenshot.

I think Disney is leaning more towards the idea that all the R units are pretty much the same except for some surface differences. The Droid Builder's workshop I think supports that idea. And is anyone else creeped out by the R8's lack of an eye?

Fun fact. The R5 was one of the only type of droids that could use the force. The one in new hope killed itself to help the rebels win the galactic civil war. It's too long of a story to put it in a comment section so I suggest you just check it out for yourself.

Wasn't there an R-9 model that had a much taller body and was designed for diplomatic assistance as an alternative to Protocol droids and could even speak Galactic Basic too instead of Binary "Droid Speech". ? Also what about the Dome headed model with the 3 forward facing eyes ? (seen in Imperial Service). The odd thing about Droid designations is there technically should be Hundreds of R2-D2's and we should see other droids that look identical - as their serial numbers are so short the number of variations just isn't high enough for there to not be duplications - so the use of "Nick Names" makes sense - I can see why Pilots would want to be able to tell their own Droid at a glance via customs paint jobs and cosmetic mods though. Perhaps another area to add visual distinction would be the hatches on the torso - if these were coloured or edged differently - also they could have more than one colour on the head and chest like a combination of green and yellow for example. If nothing else it would be quite fun to see some model manufacturer offer a mix-and-match kit series that enables people to design their own to a degree much more so than even the Hasbro ones with swappable parts did. The problem with Artoo is that you get attached to him and think of him as a Character so when Phantom Menace came along and wiped droids out by the skip load it was a bit disconcerting.
