State Of Mind with Maurice Benard

3 жыл бұрын

For this week's State Of Mind, Ingo Rademacher and his son, Peanut, join me to talk about parenting and the effects of disciplining with anger can have on your children.
About Us: State of Mind to me means being 100% present, feeling completely at peace inside of you, not letting your thoughts control your life and always looking for ways to be the best that you can be.
This will be the first series here on KZfaq, however you can learn more about State Of Mind at www.mbstateofmind.com.
If you'd like to learn more about my life, I've recently released "Nothing General About It - How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital" www.amazon.com/dp/0062973371?...
--------------------------------------
Film and Television veteran, member of the Actor’s Studio, and two time Emmy Award winner Maurice Benard most recently starred as John Gotti in Lifetime’s acclaimed “Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter,” which aired this year; the horror film “Nightmare Cinema,” with Mickey Rourke, which opened the New York Horror Film Festival certified fresh on rotten tomatoes and was in theatres June 21st; the indie films “Hold On,” and “Equal Standard,” alongside Ice T; and Lifetime’s “A Lover Betrayed.”
Among his other film and television credits are David O’Russell’s critically acclaimed “Joy,” with Robert De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence; “Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter”; “Ruby”; and “Mi Vida Loca.” The indie film “The Ghost and the Whale,” produced by Benard’s wife, Paula, in which he starred as a bipolar man losing the battle with his illness after his wife’s death, was a labor of love underscored by his strong commitment to raise awareness about mental health issues.
Although Benard has always worked out of the spotlight mentoring individuals in mental health crisis, a letter from a young man whose brother committed suicide while struggling with mental illness moved Benard to begin a public commitment to mental health awareness outside the confines of “General Hospital.” In 2009, on “Oprah,” he shared with the world his own bipolar diagnosis at the age of 22 and the ensuing struggle to manage the illness, from surviving a stint in a mental institution as a young man to becoming a television star. Benard’s journey with mental illness has also been profiled in magazines including PEOPLE, LA LIFE, and BP. HarperCollins is publishing his memoir about the journey, Nothing General About It: How Love and Lithium Saved Me On and Off General Hospital on April 7, 2020.
He has also lent his face and voice to numerous organizations to further the cause, including International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF), the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), Mental Health America (MHA) and Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, to name a few. For his contribution to mental health awareness, Benard has received numerous awards, including IBF’s Imagine Award, NAMI’s Lionel Aldridge Award, and the Erasing the Stigma Award alongside Carrie Fischer and Rod Steiger.
In addition to testifying before Congress on mental health issues, Benard’s keynote speaker engagements detailing his experience include the annual conference for The National Manic Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and to hundreds of students at the University of San Diego.
In August 2018, Benard celebrated 25 years on the award-winning series “General Hospital,” cementing his status as an enduring television icon. The popular character Sonny “Michael” Corinthos, Jr. originated with Benard in 1993, initially written as only a six-month guest arc; however, Benard’s powerful portrayal became wildly popular with fans around the world and the celebrated actor quickly took Sonny from a peripheral to central role in the fictional city of Port Charles. Benard has maintained lead status on “General Hospital” for the past 16 years, garnering nine Emmy Award nominations, in addition to taking the statue home in 2003 and 2019.
Benard was previously on “All My Children” as another popular character, Nico, from 1987-1990.
His many loyal fans have not only tuned in for almost three decades, but also repeatedly nominated Benard for a Soap Opera Digest Award, honoring him as a winner three times. Benard has also received a Prism Award and four Latino Media Arts Award nominations.
Benard’s “General Hospital” character has long been on the forefront of socially relevant issues woven into storylines like AIDS and Alzheimer’s awareness. He also pushed for his character to be diagnosed as bipolar so mental health awareness can be front and center on a daily television platform.

not all of them... but the majority yes... I am sure they have all had their moments... just like everyone else does with their co workers. But these guys sometimes do some deep scenes with each other.... so I think that makes a big difference too. There is one squeaky wheel in the GH cast though... and that person causes some problems for some of the other cast members... like Ingo and even MB

Just seeing this interview and knowing what visceral rivals Jax and Sonny were to each other for at least 25 years is a testament to how great of actors they both are. Maurice Bernard/Sonny Corinthos just simply changed the tenor of GH, and we all know how wonderful of an actor he is, but shoutout to Jax/Ingo Rademacher as well. He was an AMAZING foil to Sonny at the height of GH's popularity with THEE Brenda Barrett and that ferocious triangle, and he even made Carly bearable during the latter years as well. He is AMAZING too. Love it.

First off I want to give major props to Ingo's son for coming on the show and talk about anger. He is a brave kid and I hope this conversation that he had with his dad and you Maurice strengthens his relationship with his dad. 🙏🏻Overall the conversation was great and a really important one guys but I have to admit I also absolutely loved the reminiscing that you guys did on your characters, and just your camaraderie in general. This was a good episode and really helped a lot! I too sometimes have problems with anger and impatience. I have to take a step back, take a deep breath and not let my emotions take over. Great episode👏🏻

Wow. This had me sobbing. My father hit with his fists. He was definitely from the generation that felt children should be seen but not heard. A father is the first man a daughter has access to. My dysfunctional relationship with my father caused me to leave home looking for love. Tough situation to put a daughter in! Some guys would try to take advantage of that; fortunately I found a good man who loves me deeply. 38 years strong.

What your father did was bad even criminal if he punched a child, but this didn't come out of nowhere , was your father born a bad person, which is rare, or did someone abuse him as a child so badly, that it warped his psyche and he never got the help he needed ?

" Parent Fail " those words when he mentioned them ran deep In side my soul and it hit home really hard. The way he explained it after he said it was deep in thought. I wish someone said " Parent Fail " to me when I was younger and getting hit alot by my father. I've always believed I deserved everytime I was hit even when I did nothing wrong. To this day I still believe I deserved it in some way because why would he do it if I didnt do anything wrong. Thank you Ingo for mentioning " Parent Fail". You sure got my mind thinking.

I grew up having my dad take his belt off and use it to hit me when I did something wrong . Then I’d out fool him and cover my butt with a pillow so I couldn’t feel the belt and I’d scream out like it hurt but he had no clue he wasn’t hurting me at all. My grandmother and mom used a wooden spoon to give me a spanking....the nuns used a ruler and their hands to hit me.... but I grew up to be a very respectful person....I do have anger issues especially during this nightmare we are all in. I am trying to control my anger at all those selfish unmasked people that walk by me and my dog because you can’t talk sense into careless people ....ty for these videos every Sunday they are very helpful and gives me something to look forward to...❤️

Hitting is wrong regardless its called abuse
@ginnasaldivar464
@ginnasaldivar464 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, hitting is wrong but that’s just how our parents disciplined us when we were kids, I was raised the exact same way, I would ask my mother, once I was an adult of course, why she would spank us with a chancla (flip flop), or a wooden spoon, or even a paddle and she said that’s how she was raised. I asked my grandmother one day how my mom & Aunts were disciplined and she said the same thing,, wooden spoon, house shoe (meaning slipper in place of the chancla). She said she had girls so she rarely had to use the belt, she also said this is how she was raised, this is how she and her sisters were disciplined, her brothers though were spanked with the belt if they misbehaved. It’s a generational thing, we don’t do it anymore because it’s seen as abuse now if you so much as spank your child, not beat your child just spank them.

For the first part of my life I was raised by parents who both had anger issues and used hands and other objects to hit and abuse with every time they got even the slightest bit annoyed. Then when I was 14 my bio father died and my uncle stepped in to raise me. He believed you never lay a hand on a child. He was a foster parent to over 100 children during his life and had four adopted kids of his own including me. He wanted us all to obey him because we loved and respected him and never because we feared him. He was the greatest man I've ever known. He's been gone 10 years and I miss him every day. I still have anger issues myself from the way I was raised those first 14 years. I am a work in progress but I am much better at controlling and channeling my anger now. I have worked with other abused kids over the years to try to help them. I don't have kids of my own but I've always sworn that if I ever do I will never lay a hand on them. They will respect and not fear me. I will never let a child of mine go through what I did.

It could be that your parents had a mental health disorder, or that they were abused so badly as childremn that it affected their psyche, that can trigger a mental health illness and acting out in anger is a symptom of that, mot people aren't born bad or born behaving bad, unless theyre bad seed psychopaths (like certain elderly former prresidents theyre either born with a mental illness or they were abused as children ,sometimes both, scientist say that if children are abused that affects the structure of their brains that handles emotions,stress etc, likely whatever your parents did, they need to get the help they likely never got and it's forgivable.

Many times, anger comes from unmet expectations. We expect a response or an action from a person and we don't get it, that leads to disappointment, disappointment leads to conflict and unresovled conflict leads to anger and once that anger is in us, it roots and grows and shows up in so many ways. Other times, it's the need to control. Anger is an emotion and emotion has no intellect. Thanks for having this episode. Very important.

You hit the nail on the head! When your child(ren) has a situation (i.e. whether a fall or other things) the way we handle it shows care, love, concern; not going ballistic or making a mountain out of a mole-hill. That makes all the difference in how they will react to the things in their life. Example: I delivered a family member's baby (long story). Instinctively, I did what needed to be done and didn't get a case of nerves until I was by myself after the fact. LOL Today, my kids never get into a panic because they've always seen the way we handled all the bumps in the road.

This was so touching, raw, real and very important thank you all! Peanut is an incredible young man and such a good example to other kids as well. I worked with teenagers with mental illness for twenty years and this is such an important thing to discuss. One thing I want to comment on is that women can struggle with this too but society often reacts differently and labeling occurs..."the angry woman," etc. This is a human issue that often, as you say, stems from childhood and breaking the cycle is the greatest gift to yourself and your loved ones. Thank you all for an insightful, relatable topic!

This was such a valuable and helpful talk. All three of you sharing and having Ingo’s son show that raw emotion on how anger affected him from his father. I think all men should see this. This is real life and coming not only from the parent of how they feel about themselves when anger is evoked but how it makes your child feel and to then see your child’s tears. And even for grown sons and now on their own to even watch this to know their feelings are validated. It is not okay. Loved when Ingo’s son said, now I can talk to you. Communication is open. Maurice you are really helping all by being so transparent and your guests being so transparent, with every topic. Thank you.

This video made me cry. In a good way. I wasn’t as close to my parents as i am now. I would check in on them every now and then even tho they’re 20 mins away haha. Then i look at my relationship with my daughter...it just hit the feels. She tells me what scares her and i do my best to change. It’s a working progress. But one thing I notice is she doesn’t tell you what’s wrong right away. I try to explain to her that we need to communicate to make things better. Resolve the issue at hand. Like i said, it is a working progress! Thank you for sharing your story. ❤️

I agree with the talk on anger and how we learn from our environment. I try to educate our children who are now raising children to not make mistakes of parents. Love theses sessions because as fans of actors and programs we tend to forget off screen you are like us just people with life issues.

Thank you for doing this video. I actually have a family who suffers from severe mental health. I had a younger brother who was 24 and committed suicided in 2014. It was very hard to accept it, but I also knew he was not suffering anymore. . Great channel. You are both are great actors. Thank you for sharing some of your personal lives as well

This was fabulous. This issue of anger is also important in households where a woman is only authority figure. Discipline is a very sharp edge parents struggle with a lot. Thank you to Ingo, Peanut and Maurice for being these issues forward. Namaste.🗽🌹❣️☀️

You Maurice and Ingo are showing the world 🌎 of KZfaq family and father's and friends that there is a different way to raise children. The way it was when you and Ingo (as well as myself) were brought up was handed down from generation to generation since before Christ. Glad you guys let Peanut tear up and cry a little. This conversation with men and their sons is an amazing gift. I was raised in fear..... mental, physical and verbal. I swore I wouldn’t do that to my children and we all have a moment we regret but I accomplish that with raising my kids. Now I have the pleasure and honor of watching my grandchildren while their parents are at work. I never let my mother watch my children because of the abuse she gave to me as a kid. Keep talking about this it’s the only way things change! My husband and I also had a “family bed” for us, our 3 kids he and I. It was the BEST sleep and family time we had. It doesn’t last forever enjoy while the kids are little!!! Keep up the good work Maurice.

I absolutely love this conversation and I’m getting a lot out of this. I am a single mom (24,19.11&10) and I know I have anger issues at times and it makes me cry. I desperately try to not snap but some days it’s near impossible. One of my kids has pretty severe anxiety as well as behavior issues, and he will push and push. I have improved because I keep myself aware of what my anger can do to him and his anxiety. Each day can be a struggle but my kids are my everything. Oh, and I cosleep most nights with my younger two (10&11). I sleep better knowing they are nearby and feel safe. Their father was a scary person so I tend to overcompensate as well. This mama is a mess but try to be self aware.
