In this video, we cover everything you need to know about charging the Ford F-150 Lightning. It's a comprehensive review that also explains basic EV charging so even the novice can understand. We know it's a long video, and that's because we went for thoroughness over brevity since most F-150 Lightning owners are experiencing electric car charging for the first time.
This video is powered by Qmerit, North America’s leading provider of installation services for EV charging, home energy storage, and other electrification technologies.

Note: @16:30 in the video I say that you need to install the Charge Station Pro on a dedicated 100-amp circuit. That was the information we had at the time. Since then, I learned that you could de-rate the unit, all the way down to about 24-amps if you don't have the full 100-amp circuit to spare.

Tom, I have been looking for more detailed install info on the Charge Station Pro since I’m in Non-SunRun serviced State. I’m working with my electrician so I can future-proof my install should I want to add the SunRun HIS at a later date. There is very little information out there…no detailed Charge Station Pro install manual from Ford, only a reference to DC conductors (no conductor size info) in the online wiring schematic available via SunRun’s sales partner, and no response from SunRun’s Tech Support. I finally got a hold of Delta’s (the HIS manufacturer) and they confirmed the need for a #8 copper pair for the DC return. Any chance you could do an in-depth helpful install video for us who have to figure out our install w/o SunRun? I know Ford listens to you and I feel they need to know there customers in non-SunRun states have angst over the lack of info that SunRun shares with those who are not going to be there customers….. 😎

@@michaelabelaj1581 l don’t know…I’ve lost most of my enthusiasm for installing Ford’s/SunRun’s HIS…I will probably wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation solution. I just got my truck last week, so receipt of my FCSP, and any install info that comes with it, is at least 1+ week(s) out. At this point, I’ve stopped wondering about having the ability to provide power to my house from my truck…with all of the reported FCSP overheating problems being reported at the 80A setting, I just want a safe EVSE that charges my truck as promised……..

OK well you say not at my house but why can't I just use an AC to DC battery charger ? Really. You already know. I'm on that level 3 A/C to D/C charging from my own house using a standard battarie charger that I buy from Harbor Freight from under 100 buks probably. Level 3 stuff. So? I've explained this process to many peoples so it definatly will work. That's it done. All you do is use a battery charger for this. Now you on a level 3 charging from your house so simple. Oh and if you have solar panels at your house that makes it even easier. Dont have to convert the energy. Already comes in naturally as D/C

As usual great video from Tom. I am also waiting for my F150 lightning but I already have mustang Mach E standard range and charging looks to be exactly the same. I have had my Mustang Mach E For a coyuple of months now and I love it. I am leaving Atlanta area and already went down to Florida for 400 mile trip. Are used electrify America phone Application to find DC fast charging stations And there are plenty of them Conveniently located along main highways. I was able to go from 10 to 80% charge in 30 minutes Which on my standard range Mustang was going from about 23 miles to 200 miles of range. Electrify America stations are usually located next to Walmart, Sam’s Club or other shopping areas so you can take a 30 minute break to get some food and you will be on your way.

You're going to need the correct main line disconnect but I don't see how it can't be set up to be automatic and be current sensing on the grid side to see if power has returned. I don't think it would be instantaneous because you would need to disconnect power from the grid before turning on power from the truck.

A third party solar company has to install a grid-tie inverter system between the Ford 80 amp evse and you're house. It will transfer automatically when utility power is lost and resume charging when utility power is restored. And you can set a lower battery limit so it doesn't completely drain the truck battery.

Nice to see that Ford has addressed all these different charging needs with a well thought selection of accessories to fit individual needs and electrical panel limitations. I think they will do very well with this electric F150, for both contractors and individual homeowners. Ford should link to this video on their Lightning web site; I don’t think their manual writers could do any better at explaining how to get the best charging setup for a new F150.

Finally I found the charging information I was looking for -- in your video! I have a Lightning Lariat extended battery model on order, but there was very little information available that describes the different charging options and the chargers that come standard with the Lightning. Your video answered all of those questions. Yes, it was a long video; however, it had all the information that I needed to hear. I was already concerned that the 80A Charge Station Pro would not be a feasible solution because I doubt I can provide dedicated 100A service for its use without breaking the bank. The 48A charger may be a viable alternative -- once my electrician checks out my situation. Thanks again. You done good! Lou from Georgia.

Great compendium on EV Charging as so much of this applies to all EVs. After 4+ years of EV charging, I found it best to get the highest power equipment your home and budget will allow. Overnight charging works great and there’s no need to charge every day when driving under 50 miles each day. But you may have a change in plans with only a few hours to charge and appreciate charging at 30 miles per hr vs 15.

Tom congrats on a great video. I wonder if anyone has asked about charging an electric vehicle with a portable power source? I see some portable battery products emerging into the markets. There are also some higher priced gas generators with low harmonic distortion that, with an adaptor, may be able to power a vehicle enough to get a car or truck out of an impacted area in the event of a natural disaster or long term power outage.

Thanks for producing this very professional and very informative video! I'm too late to reserve an F150 Lightning (maybe later this year), but the information is invaluable to educate me about what is generally involved in owning and home charging and EV. I am in the process of choosing a solar panel system and installer. Your comments regarding the DC charger got me wondering if charging the Lightning directly from DC solar panels is a possibility. Do you have any knowledge about that possibility you could share? Thanks again. I have subscribed so I look forward to more exceptional content.

You're gonna pay 80k+ when you're not a truck guy? The 40k version won't be available to your average Joe, only to business fleet.

Great coverage of the subject. Can a transfer switch handle requests from multiple EV’s trying to supply V2L? Wasn’t sure how much handshaking is happening and how it handles loads such as two F150 Lightning’s. Don’t want one charging the other or both supplying power if it’s not needed or desired.

the system could only allow for one truck to back it up. How the system works is that it would not back feed on the 100amp circuit it comes back in on another line so if you had two chargers they would be separated from the backup and the one truck wouldn't power the other one.

Thanks for all this, great video. Question on the ford backup power: Did Ford mention that the extended battery is required for this feature? Apologies if you mentioned it and I missed it.

Thanks for the great videos Tom. Perhaps this is a dumb question, but I expect others may also have it. If you were to have a second vehicle in addition to the F-150 lightning and installed the Ford charge station pro, could you use the charge station pro to also charge that other vehicle or does the fact that the charge station pro uses it different adapter preclude you from doing so.

Tom, great video! I am wiring now our new net zero energy home for the 80amp charger and home integration system. (day 2 Lightning reservation) However, our solar installer and electrician have zero info on these two Ford components. Do you have any details, specs etc. on the 80am Charge Station Pro and the Ford Home backup system? thanks!

Good Info Tom. I currently own a Mach E and have a lightning on order. Homes in our area are required to have 200 amp services. Rarely if ever does a home use any where near 200 amps at one moment in time. As most people charge at night a 200 amp service is more than adequate. My question is can the 80 amp EVSE be used with the Mach E a%.
